I was preparing for bed until I saw the onslaught of updates on news sites. Turns out it’s Qixi Festival aka Chinese Valentine’s Day! Drama productions release new stills to celebrate the annual meeting of two (tragic) lovers, the tale of Zhi Nu and Niu Lang’s forbidden love as the cowherd and weaver girl in Chinese mythology. I’m sure we have at least watched one adaptation of this story.
You might drown in the stills so I focus mostly on ancient dramas….for now. Lol.

First stills are released for the upcoming period drama Queen Dugu (独孤皇后) with Chen Xiao and Chen Qiao En as the epic couple in history, known for their dedication to each other, as well as their unified thoughts on frugality and spreading Buddhism. His reign was a period of prosperity with great military power. I have no qualms about Chen Xiao as a romantic emperor, he’s done it before. Expected a routine palace drama so it’s nice to see them outside of the palace in the first set of pictures.
The styling is definitely different than their royal robes and hair. Chen Qiao En looks very youthful and cute and Chen Xiao looks more mature as well, though nothing beats him in the kingly costume. Dugu Huang Hou (Empress Gugu) or The Unique China Queen (独孤皇后) retells the unique love story between Emperor Wen and Empress Dugu, highlighting the promise that he won’t let another woman have his kids (birth control methods? Just kidding! Lol.). And yes, there’s another version with Hu Bing Qing and Zhang Dan Feng called The Legend of Dugu.
Ah, the rumor is true after all. Lol. Yu Zheng confirmed Chen Xiao‘s lock down in the upcoming palace drama, Dugu Huang Hou (Empress Dugu) (独孤皇后), playing the first emperor of the Sui Dynasty – Emperor Wen of Sui, who’s famous for having the fewest concubines due to his love and respect for his one Empress, Empress Dugu. They met young and he promised that she would be the only woman to carry his children. I can see Chen Xiao in this role. Yep. If you doubt his ability to show he would only love one woman, watch Female Prime Minister…. oh my heart! Maybe I need a rewatch!

Dugu Huang Hou (Empress Gugu) or The Unique China Queen (独孤皇后) production team officially confirmed Chen Qiao En as their leading lady on 12/21. I really don’t understand the need of another version of the same story. Hu Bing Qing and Zhang Dan Feng’s The Legend of Dogu is another version of the same historical figure, retelling the unique love story between Emperor Wen and his Empress Dugu, a promise that he won’t let another woman have his kids. It’s romantic and all, but do I really want to see it twice?
