Novoland: Pearl Eclipse (九州·斛珠夫人) is adapted from the novel written by Xiao Ru Qin and stars Yang Mi and William Chan. The novel is a bit creepy since he is much older than her, took her in and raised her, then they develop feelings for each other. Plus, he’s a powerful eunuch. BAH. I’m sure the drama will change that up. Lol. Anyway, in the drama she plays daughter of the merfolks and her entire village and people are slaughtered due to the people’s obsession with pearls and pearls were created from merfolk’s tears. During this uncertain period, our heroine is taken in by the hero who is a powerful official of the imperial court, and she disguises as a male disciple by his side. After they return to the capital, the job of guarding the King is given to her. And he’s the third leg of this love triangle. The King has long given up on his court, exhausted by the internal and external turmoils, therefore he sits back and watches our male lead’s struggle to save the country. When he finds out his pretty guard is a girl, his feelings complicate everything.
I love listening to music from around the world, especially music in a language I’m trying to learn. In the past couple years that I’ve been studying Mandarin and watching Chinese dramas, I’ve been slowly building a list of various Mandarin language songs and artists I enjoy. Since I haven’t had too many shows to write about lately, I thought I’d share some of my faves on my playlist. And to make it extra challenging, I picked songs that were not from dramas I’d watched.
Since I did a Review post for Age of Legends as the show was starting up, I thought I’d add a Discussion Post now that the series finished up this week. Judging from various comments and chats I’ve seen, it seems like there were quite a few of you watching it who didn’t realise anyone else was and others who were thinking of watching, but weren’t sure if you should commit the time. I really enjoyed it, but wanted to see what you thought about it.
So what did you think of the show? What did you like about it? What did you wish had been done better? Would you recommend it for others and why? Is William Chan the next big action star? How did you like his work on this series compared to his past work? Are you looking forward to his next series, Dancing in the Storm? Who else stood out for you in this series?
Age of Legends is a crime drama about scheming drug lords, the police who try to catch them and, caught in the middle, a man trying to remember the last eight years of his life. Revenge, secret identities, murder plots and really bad karaoke abound in this drama which is careful to balance the love story with the story of a man who aspires to be a Chinese Pablo Escobar.
This is the first modern C-drama in a while that’s really impressed me. Despite some rather melodramatic episodes, overall the first 19 episodes have been pretty fun and exciting for me. And after having watched some dramas this year where actors I’ve loved in other shows have underwhelmed me in more recent series, I was really happy to see William Chan and Sandra Ma’s characters actually engage me and keep me interested.
Adapted from the same-name novel written by Xiao Qi Xiao, Age of Legends (橙红年代) is an upcoming modern drama starring William Chan and Sandra Ma as leads. William is 30 years old, representing young men with a burning ardor, persevering to the top despite his humble background, displaying stories of love from all around. With a strong sense of justice and courage, he gathers a group of like-minded men. Due to an incident, he disappears from the world for 8 years, returning to find his dad beat up and admitted to the hospital. After delivering his brand of punishment to the deserved people, the nurses fall for his charms and upon meeting our female lead, the cop in charge of the case, they butt heads immediately. Doesn’t help that she discovers his involvement with a case from 8 years ago and is determined to uncover more dirt about him. Sandra plays a 23-year old feisty police woman, the beauty of the bureau with a temper to boot.
William Chan doing his best moves in here, I don’t think he would have to act at all. Lol. There’s the lovely Movie princess Bai Bai He and beautiful sister Qin Hai Lu and also the rising face in Li Xian of Tientsin Mystic. Stellar casting and now the question comes down to the writing…
