Faraway Wanderers: Priest’s novel-to-drama adaptation confirms Zhang Zhe Han and Gong Jun

Looks like after the success of The Untamed (陈情令), the new trend is adapting more boy-love novels into dramas. Up next here is a novel written by Priest (Legend of Fei) called Faraway Wanderers/Tian Ya Ke (天涯客). It has confirmed the two male leads to be Zhang Zhe Han and Gong Jun, followed by Zhou Ye, Ma Wen Yuan, Guo Jia Hao and Zhao Qian. The story follows our two male leads. One of them is Zhou Zi Shu to be played by Zhang Zhe Han. He’s the leader of Tian Chuang, an intelligence gatherers and assassins who served only the Emperor. It’s hard to get in and harder to get out; through a punishment leaving you either disabled or dead, but our leader yearns for a different life and does successfully get out. Our other male lead is Wen Ke Xing, played by Gong Jun. Very similar life trajectory to his other half; he’s the Master of Ghost Pavilion, a hush-hush place known to jianghu as containing the most cruel and evil of humans. Our temperamental Master of the Ghost Pavillion is also tired of this life and wishes to get out. They get entangled in jianghu’s latest chaos when a teenage boy is out for revenge and attaches himself to the unwilling Zi Shu and calls him Shifu. Lol. And that’s all I have gotten to.

Douban’s Top Rated Chinese Romance Novels and their Adaptations

In the last few years, I’ve gone through several drama droughts, where I wasn’t interested in any of the dramas coming out. As the popularity of IP adaptations continued to surge and seeing the more light-hearted comedies released, I decided it was time to venture into the source medium.

However, where to start was always puzzling and how should I prioritise this growing list of Chinese novels I accumulated? I’m not sure if I’m alone in this, but after a while I became overwhelmed and now those books on my TBR list just sit there, whilst I find other novels to read. I normally visit Douban when I want to find a new novel to read, but Douban has three ways of arranging their novels; their comprehensive arrangement (whatever that may mean), arrange by date or arrange by rating. As the ratings lover that I am, here is a list of highest rated romance novels on Douban.

Legend of Fei with Zhao Li Ying and Wang Yi Bo releases new stills

Yay! We get to see the almost full set of characters and their hairstyles. Lol. I still haven’t touched the novel yet. *fail*

Legend of Fei (有翡) is based on the novel You Fei/Bandits (有匪) written by Priest. It sounds like your typical wuxia drama that takes place during the Northern and Southern dynasties (?), where legends have fallen to the chaotic world, allowing room for the new rising heroes of the pugilistic world, some of which are our leading lady and man, Zhou Fei (Zhao Li Ying) and Xie Yun (Wang Yi Bo). Our female lead grew up in a neutral zone where there is no war, known collectively as the 48 tribes, so she leads a pretty peaceful life. That changes when her father is invited to join the Southern region, and she is forced to enter jianghu shortly after. Our male lead is an optimist, who knows a lot about the world because he has basically done a lot of jobs. His expertise? Running away and talking his way in/out of things (Lol). During our female lead’s journey, he is there to help her as she slowly becomes a hero in her own right.

Li Ying is making a comeback after having her first child! Legend of Fei (有翡) is based on the novel You Fei/Bandits (有匪) written by Priest. As I read through the reviews of this novel, a lot of them describes the writing of Priest as draggy and there’s a lack of romantic scenes between the leading couple.

I only know one half of the equation (pairing) so I can’t judge much but reading everyone’s positive reviews about The Untamed makes me feel slightly better about this pairing.

First Impression: What do you think of Zhu Yi Long and Bai Yu’s Guardian webdrama?

I haven’t had time to check this drama out yet. T___T

Guardian or Zhen Hun (镇魂) is a webdrama adapted from the supernatural novel written by Priest following our two male leads. Zhao Yun Lan (Bai Yu) is a leader of the Special Investigation Department, in charge of cases done by non-human beings. His family is rich and the department is created by his father. Lol. Arrogant and a little shameless about his talents, he also fights well. He is responsible and lives like the quote, “an eye for an eye”, so don’t mess with him. His real identity was a god at the same time as Nüwa but for certain reasons, was reincarnated to become a human being, without his powers. The other male lead is Chen Wei (Zhu Yi Long), a University Professor, known for his pretty looks and pink cheeks when teased by the other male lead. His real identity is one of the two Demon Lords. He has a sword which can slice and obliterate ghosts. As they solve crimes together, more of their history will be unraveled.
