First Impression: What do you think of Zhu Yi Long and Bai Yu’s Guardian webdrama?

I haven’t had time to check this drama out yet. T___T

Guardian or Zhen Hun (镇魂) is a webdrama adapted from the supernatural novel written by Priest following our two male leads. Zhao Yun Lan (Bai Yu) is a leader of the Special Investigation Department, in charge of cases done by non-human beings. His family is rich and the department is created by his father. Lol. Arrogant and a little shameless about his talents, he also fights well. He is responsible and lives like the quote, “an eye for an eye”, so don’t mess with him. His real identity was a god at the same time as Nüwa but for certain reasons, was reincarnated to become a human being, without his powers. The other male lead is Chen Wei (Zhu Yi Long), a University Professor, known for his pretty looks and pink cheeks when teased by the other male lead. His real identity is one of the two Demon Lords. He has a sword which can slice and obliterate ghosts. As they solve crimes together, more of their history will be unraveled.

I started it & am enjoying the bromance while lamenting that the novel remains untranslated. I am hoping that the drama will lead to the novel getting translated. Especially when I read that the drama could not do justice to the awesomeness of the novel due to censorship. What a pity.

Hi, Riley. I’ve read this book in Chinese twice. The writer Priest is known for her classic style of writing so it is really difficult to translate. If you’re really interested in it, I may translate this for you bit by bit just for fun. [[email protected]]

Due to censorship, the entire mythological background of plot and characters received an “update”. Descendants of extraterrestrial DNA combined with native Earth lifeforms are categorized into 3 groups of sentient beings: regular humans, and underground people and creatures with supernatural abilities.

Still early for full-blown bromance. More or less episodic stories are more cliched, safe and predictable, without the original novel’s intensity. Feel like there is a “What I/we learned” moment at the end of each story. The characters are also less cunning, smart, powerful or intimidating. Zhu Yi Long’s character is in charge of catching underground people who behave badly among humans, much different from the novel where almost all demons, ghosts and monsters were terrified of him.

I have read all the novel (luckily translated into my language) and it secure Priest writer as my best author. The whole set of Legendary Chinese Demon and Gods are told stunningly and unforgettable. The story with the female characters who used a doll to contain her spirit and her cruel yet faithful lover still stuck in my mind until now. The only problem that, main cp romance was slow and sometimes during the long run of novel, it was sacrificed for the plotwise. Finally that romance is less memorable to my opinion. So I don’t mind if they cannot potray the romance sides on drama but will totally upset if the feel and hurtful emotion are failed to deliver

Tbh, I started this only for Zhu Yi long and I didn’t think i’ll last 2 episodes. Oh, how wrong I was. This is sooo addicting. Started watchning this Wednesday and I couldn’t stop. This is more interesting than Fu Yao, which coming from me is a big thing because I usually glue myself to the shinny, colourful and overproduced stuff with pretty people 🙂 The Guardian ticks only the pretty people box (the leads are sooooo good looking, both together and separately)but shinny, colourful and overproduced it definitely isn’t.If you require exemplary production quality – this is not for you. If you prefer dramas with charismatic cast that can make you listen to them read from a phone book – watch it. Both Zhu Yi Long and Bai Yu can do that, especially when they are together <3

Nell’s post above is exactly how I feel about Guardians. Prior to watching this, I didn’t have a good impression of Bai Yu. The two characters that I associate him with were super annoying so I thought I’d have to sit through him being a nuisance again. Not this time. I’m completely pulled in by his portrayal of Zhao Yunlan. This is not the Bai Yu I watched before.

As for Zhu Yi Long, I’m simply impressed. I’ve always liked his acting and wished more people would appreciate him. He’s reeling in new fans left and right now. Happy for his big break.
