Oh My General Discussion Post Week 1: Episodes 1 – 8

Haven’t had time to check this out yet. T____T Let me know how it fares in your opinion!

Adapted from the novel General Above I Am Below written by Ju Hua San Li, Oh My General (将军在上) stars Sandra Ma and Peter Sheng Yi Lun in a role-reversal historical romance, where she’s the brave general and he’s the good-for-nothing male. How will they meet and fall in love?

Stills:

Our female warrior, Sandra Ma, born into a family line of generals, she fought many battles before being revealed as a female and now she’s betrothed to the country’s laziest man with weak health. Of course, her family repelled the idea of her following their footsteps and only wanted her to live a peaceful life as a woman. That is until everything changed that one night, taking away many lives in her family, and the little girl was forced to grow up. Peter Sheng Yi Lun plays the good-for-nothing but very beautiful man who grew up under the love and protection of his mother. Because no one takes him seriously, he follows that belief to live. Interestingly, I like that description, making our female lead the one to see his potentials and enhance those traits. YESH!

Directed by Wen Jie (Love Tears Us Apart), Hua Yao Liang (Special ID, Together), and Lu Hao Ji Ji (Go Princess Go), and written by Shi Chen Gong Zi, Oh My General has 60 episodes, airing 8 episodes 1st week, then 7 eps every Wednesday.

I was trying to find out how often it airs. Thanks details. Loving this drama, I do like a comedy but I dislike slap sticks…the is bits that is annoying but not overboard. Chemistry between leads is undeniable.

I’m really loving this show! The dancing scenes and the acts with the mother-in-law are so cringe worthy but the rest of the show is great!

@keekeepod I was looking to subscribe to youku just to continue watching this show! But I’m not located in China and can’t find a simple credit card payment option. Can you advise?

        Thanks!

Comparing the novel to the drama. So far the drama keeps most of the good stuff from the novel almost to the letter. It has also added shenanigans such as the cringe worthy dancing prince, twice. To make room for such shenanigans, the drama does not show how the general competently runs the military and how she causes nightmare to aristocrats and court officials with overblown sense of entitlement.

i have fun watching 8 episodes, it’s funny. acting is good. n i think they use their own voice?
    OTP chemistry is there..
Sandra Ma perfectly fits the role, her beauty is not that girly type like Rachel Mao or Dilraba.
and give clap to Peter Sheng, i heard he lose weight for this role(his character is someone with weak health and no kungfu). he looks skinny when they have dancing scene where he’s topless, his muscle body is gone T.T

Yeah he didn’t need to go that far. I could have suspended belief that he was weak even with a muscular body!

I’m currently watching the Taiwan drama “Memory Love” and couldn’t help thinking that Andy Chen (from 兰陵王妃 / Princess Lanling King) would have been perfect as the male lead. He is really pretty (I understand what Sandra Ma’s character thinks/feels when she sees a pretty boy =P), whereas I would never describe Peter Sheng as pretty in any way even if he is good looking. Andy Chen is also a better actor IMO. I am enjoying the drama despite feeling like Peter Sheng was a miscast. He is decent so far, but is over the top with the facial expressions at times.

The second male lead, the general’s advisor, is awesome. He’s her partner on the battle field, but also a confidante and supporter in her personal life. He’s a martial arts expert and yet a scholar. Second lead syndrome is creeping up on me!

And yes, there needs to be more scenes showing how awesome Sandra Ma’s character is!

Lol he sounds one of a shameless hero ever.. Well might be a good twist since with his cool and cold face a lazy man doesn’t sound awful. I need eng subs of this drama TT

I watched it and it was hilarious AF. At first I was disappointed that the male lead wasn’t pretty boy enough, but it’s too good to pass. I hope they get a happy ending

It’s a cute drama in that there’s definite role reversal, but also I find Peter Sheng’s antics in trying to ward off being taken advantage of, very endearing lol. He’s paranoid of Sandra Ma’s attempts at eating his “tofu.” Yet you can tell he enjoys it somewhat later on.

The drama is very reminiscent of Princess Go Go, with the slow-mo shots, the colorful clothes, the slapsticky scenes. It makes sense that one of the main directors is from PGG.

However, with that said, I’m not sure this drama is my cup of tea. I think part of the reason is because I find Peter Sheng too masculine to play the part of a weak pretty boy. I echo what one of the posters above stated – he’s handsome, but not necessarily pretty. There could’ve been better candidates. Sandra Ma also fits the role of tomboy TOO well lol. It was like watching a man interact with another man haha. But this is not Sandra’s fault; she’s actually delivering her character really well. I just find it difficult for any man to fall in love with someone like this. I get that this is my personal bias; I guess I’m purely in the camp of domineering male/submissive female archetypes.

Anywho, it’s worth a watch if you like to see stereotypes flipped around :).

Oh, and a tip to anyone who cares, this drama is on YT. You have to search for the drama’s name and viet sub. The viet sub doesn’t affect anything with the Chinese.

What do you think?
