Legend of Fu Yao reveals Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan Character Posters

We finally have a peek at the styling for our OTP – Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan in their upcoming period drama Legend of Fu Yao (扶摇皇后), an adaptation from the novel written by Tian Xia Gui Yuan, same author behind Chen Kun’s The Rise of Phoenixes. And I’m happy to report that both look good! Yang Mi had horrendous styling in Eternal Love that I still can’t get over them (lol), so am glad they made her look very pretty here!

First Posters:

Yang Mi looks softer and very young here, is it just me? Or that’s the magic of good hair?

Ethan Ruan, like Ming Dao, is all about the eyes and eyebrows. They never look much different. Thanks goodness he doesn’t have silky, long hair. XD

Synopsis Translated by Tranzgeek: The Everlasting Imperial City that leads all of China, Tiansha, Xuanji, and the sects of learning, the holy land, as the sky separates Fufeng and the ocean, as they face one another. In the distant past, the firmament once gave birth to a god – a lotus, that formed into Meng Fuyao (Yang Mi). In childhood, Fuyao was cast into the depths of Yuanjian Sect. Because of her aptitude for being stupid, she was subject to the disdain of her teachers. When she was 16, she “broke into the 9th heaven”, a remarkable feat that henceforth made her dedicate herself to martial arts progress. To gather the secret orders of the world, she quietly waits for the Fufeng Sea to merge with the ocean. On that day, she sets out for the vault of heaven. Fuyao steps into the world, and her experiences pave a pathway. She and the crown prince, Changsun Wuji (Ethan Ruan) of the Everlasting Imperial City gets acquainted and falls in love. The two people cooperate to settle disputes and usurp power of the Taiyuan Regent. The army in the south of the Wuji Nation violates the boundary, and that is when the Virtuous Imperial Palace changes as Prince Lie of Tiansha fights the north and allies with others to regain his royal power as the heavens terminate. It is then made known that Fuyao’s is Xuanji King’s daughter. Everyone accompanies Fuyao in leaving for the firmament, as she uses her flesh and human body to contend against the evil things of the distant past, to save the heavens. After experiencing many hardships and perils and trials, in the end they defeat the conspiracy revolving around the heavens and get rid of all malicious and demonic roads, protecting the peace of the world. Fuyao and Wuji’s love also succeed in bearing good fruit. [DO NOT TAKE OUT WITHOUT AVV PERMISSION.]

Note: Changsun Wuji belongs to the Wuji Nation. The Wuji Nation’s capital is the Everlasting Imperial City. Tiansha, Fufeng, and Xuanji are all places.

Directed by Yang Wen Jun (So Young, You Are My Sunshine Movie), Xie Ze (Great Expectatons), and Li Cai, and written by novel author and Jie Yan Yan (Hua Xu Yin), Legend of Fu Yao plans to have 60 episodes.

The costumes look good. Now if they will use darker tones for the whole drama…

Very good styling for YM! A bit darker for a lotus god though.

Ethan Ruan and Ming Dao look so alike that I mixed them up… I don’t watch Taiwanese show so I always thought they were the same person lol lol lol! Now I know 😀

yep, they’ve always been thought of as twins!

Yang Mi’s styling is very very nice! Although I do think in 3l3w Bai Qian was a known to be quite older, so her styling later in the drama didn’t get me because she couldn’t look too girly or too old but just right. I hope the production is good for this drama and everything will be shown in 60 episodes unlike some series *cough* Princess Agent *cough* I plan on reading this novel as well, just to see how the stories go.

Omg just realised Vengo Gao will be in the drama too!

Yeah hopefully this will turn out decent! PA is just a mess! The cast really saved the drama, it wouldn’t have gotten such high number of views and broke records if not for them. I feel that the drama excluding the cast didn’t deserve the hype… at least for me PA is on my least fave drama list.

Yang Mi looks great indeed and Ethan Ruan too!!! Now that I have finally found out Ming Dao and him are 2 different person, my expectation for this drama rose a little haha!

I hope Vengo isn’t playing a big part in this 🙁 I am not really fond of him as an actor.

Same here…my first impression of Vengo was good because he is tall and handsome! However, I didn’t like the way he portrayed Dong Hua in 3L3W (he came off as so arrogant/smarmy). Then again, I thought he did a good job in “Xian Jian Qi Tan” as Yang Mi’s older brother (it was also a very small role though) so maybe it depends on the character he plays.

I can see the similarities between Ethan & Ming Dao, but I never got them confused because I really like Ethan (loved him in “Fated to Love You”) but dislike Ming Dao. Haha. So I am definitely on board for his casting in this one!

Totally agree about Yang Mi’s hair. She still looked beautiful in 3L3W but the stiff hairstyle (especially the un-moving bangs) was not the most flattering. Plus I wanted to see more hairstyles when she was Bai Qian but it never changed! So far I LOVE her hairstyle in Fu Yao so I’m very pleasantly surpised! XD

Btw I haven’t had a chance to start Princess Agents yet (it’s top on my list though!) but I keep reading rave reviews about it everywhere else so I had high expectations for it! Just wondering what you don’t like about it?

PA’s trailer was one of the best I have ever seen but the drama didn’t live up to the trailer. It’s like another Suicide Squad.
The colour tone of this drama is too overly bright, pastel colours, which didn’t fit the dark theme of the drama at all. Too bright that it felt like a low budget drama.
The directing and camera work is awful, I remember there was this 1 scene where Yuwen Yue was helping Chu Qiao with her injuries and the camera slowly moved towards them so shakily and it felt so amateur.

The plot was so so draggy in the beginning, the focused so much on the maids but it doesn’t add value to the drama at all.

The scriptwriters ruined it for me really. They portrayed Yuwen Yue in a way that felt so hyprocritical and the way he handled his relationship with his closest brother Yan Xun during the massacre was awful. Even during the rebellion, when he tried to stop Chu Qiao from escaping the palace, he kept on saying that they were wrong. It’s understandable, but as the drama progresses from episode 1, Yuwen Yue didn’t seem to care much about the country at all, so why now with all the self-righteousness during the rebellion. And Yuwen Yue is becoming more and more like this guy that cares only for romance and Chu Qiao, where did the country go? Its the way the scriptwriters develop Yuwen Yue that felt so unsure, like they are using him for the sake of Chu Qiao. Lin Geng Xin is a decent actor but his character really placed a limit on his acting skills this time, which is such a great pity.

And the scriptwriters clearly is messing around with the coupling issue. They could have just gone with the initial Yan Xun and Chu Qiao, then to the Yuwen Yue and Chu Qiao cp, both could have such great chemistry moments if not for the writing. It is as though they were wavering from Yan Xun and Chu Qiao, and then suddenly we have a Yuwen Yue and Chu Qiao moment. Chu Qiao’s romance for Yuwen Yue came so abruptly. They have so much space to develop the story but so much was spent on the maids in the beginning.

I actually quite liked Vengo as Dong Hua haha I had him as Dong Hua in my head with Dilireba as Feng Jiu when I was reading the novel. I found them to really fit the characters because in the book Dong Hua was pretty much stoned face most of the time anyway.

@peach you mentioned everything i want to say 😂😂😂 i’m not getting the reason why it becomes so popular when the writing is terribly awful. i only stay to watch because i was expecting more and more twist in the next episode and got disappointed. Bummer. Since i’m a sucker for romance in historical drama, it keeps bothering me how the feeling of love is not flying in the air. they have good chemistry, but bad writing.

peach: That’s so disappointing to hear, I had hyped up Princess Agent’s so much and was looking forward to it…ah well, at least now I will go in with lower expectations. You’re right, the trailer and promos looked absolutely incredible, sad that the plot and production didn’t live up. 🙁

Nessie: I admit I never read the novels so maybe Vengo did a good job in his portrayal! I still did enjoy watching the Feng Jiu/Dong Hua storyline (although mostly because Dilireba is just super adorable as the little red fox lol). I don’t have a problem with him just being stone-faced, I think it was more that sometimes he gave off a “holier-than-thou”, “I know best” attitude which I found rather insufferable. Then again, if the character is supposed to be like that in the book then I suppose I shouldn’t fault Vengo!

It’s a preference. There were ppl raving 3l3w and also ppl who didn’t enjoy it.

@mango_cake I would say it would be better if you started PA by lowering your expectations, don’t let the trailer affect u. My comments on PA are just my own opinions, so try not to be too affected by them! I have been watching cdramas for years so it made me quite a picky drama watcher so my comments can be rather harsh at times! My mum enjoyed PA a lot, and 3L3W to me was just good but to my mum it was super duper awesome, so different ppl may have different opinions 🙂

I will pass TT even though I like the lead female , same with her previous drama 🙁 Male leads are important to me >__>

    • 19 thoughts on “Legend of Fu Yao reveals Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan Character Posters

By previous drama do you mean Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms? Trust me you are doing yourself a GREAT disservice by missing out on that drama. I had no idea who Mark Chao was and didn’t find him visually appealing from the trailer at first, but decided to watch out of curiosity. Now I can’t seem to get his character out of my head no matter how many other great male leads there are. He’s simply the top of the best list.

Will keep an eye out for this drama but I don’t know anything about this male lead as I very rarely watch C-Dramas. I usually prefer K-Dramas. It was Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms that drew me into looking up more C-Dramas.

Agree with Ian_Ian! His acting will mesmerize you so much you’ll even forget the prejudice you had with him in the beginning regarding his looks. Plus in all honesty as someone who has read the novel, the drama blows the novel out of the water. Many fans say the drama is better than the novel which is a rare achievement these days. Nearly all the words are exact as the ones in the novel, the director has done a really good job with the show.

You’re missing out so much from not watching it.
