First Impression: What do you think of The Legends with Bai Lu and Xu Kai?

Somebody be a dear and tell me if this is worth watching? The shallow in me is gobbling up the prettiness, reminds me of The Legends of Zu.

The Legends (招摇) is adapted from the novel written by Jiu Lu Fei Xiang starring new faces such as Bai Lu (King is Not Easy) and Xu Kai (Zhao Ge) as leads. Bai Lu plays Wan Lu Men’s Sect Master who is in pursuit of the legendary Wan Jun Sword left behind by the Demon Lord but she’s tricked by our hero which leads her into a precarious situation. Five years later (??!), she returns to her sect to get back her position but our hero has taken over the sect. He’s also the Demon Lord’s son disguised as a sect disciple to scheme her out of her position five years ago. She then lures him into another journey to get another sword (LOL) with the help of a rising wulin star (Dai Xu) but as it turns out, she gets kidnapped by her conspirator and the hero has to rescue her. Why does this sound so funny? Or am I reading this wrong? XD

I really want to watch it, but I don’t know where!!! Every where I’ve checked doesn’t have it, and it’s driving me crazy. Even if it’s raw, I just need to check it out so I know if it’s worth watching or not!!! T_T

I..actually REALLY like it so far. I totally skip all the “good-sect” parts cuz they’re just dumb. The dude’s been locked up, harming nobody, and then you go and poke the sleeping tiger to “protect the people”. When the tiger wakes up and bites you out of sheer annoyance, you totally act self-righteous and say “see told you it was evil”. Yeah, you dumb. I’m SO sick of caricature dumb, self-righteous “good sects”. Gah. I know in this case it’s on purpose cuz the protagonists are “demonic”, but seriously???

BUT that annoying bit aside. I know ppl are kinda upset that BaiLu’s like YuZheng’s new fav actress that he’s crazy promoting everywhere, but I actually find her quite natural here? She’s also pretty imo; I liked her in that webdrama a while back where she switched souls with the king(?). and FINALLY and most importantly, finally a girl character who can completely hold her own in fights and doesn’t need to be saved. Finally a girl who’s legit strong on her own without the whole Mary Sue…I’ve got super strong powers…that only work kind of when I don’t need the guy to save me (aka like, only strong 2% of the time…they’re usually weaker than skim milk). I really hope they don’t change that when they undergo all the angst later.

Ok totally, not gonna lie. I don’t think it’s a fantastic production. Tbh I still did fast-forward quite a bit. But overall, I think it’s super entertaining and definitely captured my interest and made me wanna watch more.

Btw Kappy, I think at least on production quality it’s way better than Legend of Zu. Sorry, I loved ZLY’s character-potential (which was totally unrealized in the show except in awesome fan-made mv’s) but honestly that show was such an ultimate flop on like, 80% of all accounts that I cringe so hard).

The “good peeps” are equally annoying tho. Also, on the pretty, I think the pretty is totally on point. The girl’s big fight scene in ep 2 was totally beautiful and also super cool? The wire work was prob so on point (except that awkward moment for XuKai in ep 2 when you can totally see where his clothes awkwardly got caught on the “invisible” wire when he went flying and then landed). Also the colors are REALLY pretty. Like overall, there’s not too much weird neon pink/orange/purples everywhere, but the red/blue theme is very vibrant. Specifically the opening sequence in the opening theme song is stunning with the aquas. I specifically noticed it cuz it looks super good high-def cerulean-blue on my youtube-wide screen LOLOLOL.

I am liking this so far. Similar to what Julianne wrote, I skipped all the sect parts too because I wasn’t so interested in their story line although they obviously play an important part. I really like the interactions between Bai Lu and Xu Kai. Xu Kai’s character is cute and adorable. He looks like a lost puppy. And yes to the independent and strong female lead. After watching King is Not Easy, I think Bai Lu matches these kind of characters more. I am also liking the colors and the whole red and blue of Bai Lu and Xu Kai’s outfits. I will be continuing to watch this and see how both of their character develops. I want to see how powerful Xu Kai’s character becomes since he’s the Demon Lord’s son.

happy that there is a xianxia romance drama to watch 🙂 Hope it’ll be as good as Ashes of Love was last year.

I read part of the novel, haven’t finished because reading in Chinese is very taxing. But I’m kind of upset (though not surprised) that they changed the script. Zhao Yao was supposed to be a ghost and a hilarious one at that. After Mo Ching got ahold of the sword, it accidentally killed her. Hence why she wanted revenge on him.

That aside, I’m so thankful they allowed the author to edit the script so it doesn’t veer too far off from the source material. Some of the funnier components have been stripped unfortunately, probably due to censor concerns (like being a ghost), but most of it is intact. I haven’t caught episode 3 yet, but I am watching it cus I’m a huge fan of the author. Love her so much!

Also, for once I’m glad voices are dubbed! Bai Lu’s real voice is so deep, I was super surprised to hear it when they filmed those outtakes with her and the King. She sounds like a man tbh. Here her feminine dubbed voice + her face works for the drama. I was scared she’s going to be really stiff and one-dimensional too, like in that king and chef soul switch drama. But she’s surprisingly natural in here.

It’s definitely worth a watch if only because the author’s participating so integrity of the plot shouldn’t be too bad

I tried to watch this and xu kai looks really good and adorable here but i got to drop it. The reminder on his scandal where he and his gf beat each other physically just really turn me off.

I fast forwarded through the earlier eps and started watching properly from ep 5. Have read a few of Jiu Lu Fei Xiang’s novels before (but not Zhao Yao) so was keen to check this out.

Main story starts with Lu Zhao Yao accidentally awakened by this girl called Qin Zhi Yan (her dad got killed by one of the “good sect” leaders but no one believes her). Unfortunately or not, LZY now looks like QZY and thanks to a special tablet that half works, she recovers some of her powers and turns invisible during the day. I quite like the actress Xiao Yan who’s portraying both Zhi Yan and LZY. The two characters are very different in their personalities and she’s doing pretty good so far. Bai Lu’s LZY is cool too! Funny how she picks on Zhi Yan like an older sister (teases her but if anyone does the same she’ll beat them up). Xu Kai’s Lie Cheng Lan is still very much heartbroken over the death if Zhao Yao. Wonder how long it’ll take him to figure out ZY’s return.

I think the drama is worth a watch if you like xianxia and wanna see a fresh cast.
