The Wind Blows From Longxi (风起陇西) is an upcoming historical drama based on the novel written by Ma Bo Yong (Longest Day in Chang’an). Written by Jin Hai Shu (The Identity of Father, and yet-to-air The Golden Hairpin) and Jin Yu, and directed by Lu Yang (movie Brotherhood of Blades), the cast has been revealed to be Chen Kun, Bai Yu, Angelababy, Sun Yi, Nie Yuan, Yin Zhu Sheng, Yu Hao Ming, Zhang Xiao Chen, and more, boasting some guest roles from Dong Zi Jian, Lei Jia Yin, and Guo Jing Fei. Reading the synopsis, I’m left quite confused by the double and triple agents status of the cast. It is set during the Three Kingdoms period when the Shu defeated the Wei using their powerful crossbows. Chen Kun plays Chen Gong, a spy/double agent hiding in the Wei State; when the Shu receives some false reports from Chen Gong, they send another spy to investigate him, and he’s Xun Xu (played by Bai Yu). Turns out, there’s another spy named Zhu Long in the Shu kingdom who has been secretly swapping out Chen Gong’s reports. Chen Gong and Xun Xu work together to expose his identity and secure peace in their homeland.
Tang Wei‘s drama comeback is Ming Dynasty (大明风华) with actor Zhu Ya Wen, and the story follows
our female lead after her family was beheaded by Emperor Yongle and she lives solely for the purpose of revenge. She’s then adopted with a new name and later becomes Empress Xiaogongzhang, wife to as Emperor Xuande, the fifth emperor of the Ming dynasty. His kindness resolves her steely heart and dangerous plan. You will see plenty of familiar faces such as Qiao Zhen Yu, Lay (as Emperor Yingzong of Ming), and Yu Hao Ming (Zhu Gao Xu, later the Prince of Han), just to name a few.
The new music video by Kym makes this drama look like it’s made for die-hard fans of Li Ying who has been starved of her OTP scenes in recent dramas because it’s loaded with sweet moments between her and Jin Han. Lol. He’s quite tall around her too so when he pulls her in for a hug, I just melt. Of course, all based on a 4-minute music video.
As we have said before. Solid casting. An official trailer was dropped three days ago and here I’m talking about it now. See how fast I am these days with news? Tang Wei‘s drama comeback is Empress of the Ming with actor Zhu Ya Wen, and the story follows their love story of 50 years, first as best friends (grew up together) before they don the royal robes – she as Empress Xiaogongzhang and he as Emperor Xuande, the fifth emperor of the Ming dynasty. You will see plenty of familiar faces in the trailer such as Qiao Zhen Yu, Lay (as Emperor Yingzong of Ming), Yu Hao Ming (Zhu Gaoxu, later the Prince of Han), just to name a few.
I’ve been reading a lot of discussion since the last post about Tribes and Empires running out of money (true!) and who’s to blame. A lot of rumors. It’s hard to say. This is director Cao Dun’s first venture into ancient fantasy series so he is ambitious and has an artistic vision and didn’t realize many costly things. It’s hard to entirely blame him because he’s well-loved by the cast and we were all wow-ed by the first trailer Tribes dished out. Weren’t we? At least now many realize a good drama isn’t just about the directing but a combination of directing, writing, and acting. Whether or not Huang Xuan’s scenes were cut, we can’t verify, but I did watch Zhou Zi Wei’s interview where he admitted that he shot the drama and then was told they could only give him so much and he replied that he didn’t need to be paid because acting out emotional turbulence like Shuo Feng in itself is a mark in his acting career. The opportunity cannot be exchanged for money. So everyone in the cast suffers in one way or another, not just any one actor.
If they are lucky to get funding for another season, let this first season be a good lesson for the production company about budget management (!!).
So we only have one more week of Tribes and Empires totaling 75 episodes because they only shot up to Huang Xuan’s ascension to the throne. What will they do from here? I don’t know because it’s not a small project. The novel writer wrote on his weibo that he has big dreams for Tribes (on the level of Attack on Titan and Lord of the Rings) but the project lacks funding so he’s looking for ka-ching!
As of 12/26, the drama online views have hit 7 billions. 😀 Hunan has also sucked it up and will air Tribes starting 12/29 on TV.
