Movie Reviews: Legend of the Demon Cat (Cmovie, 2017) and Detective Chinatown 2 (Cmovie, 2018)

I visit the China Film Insider website ever so often to read about the latest movies and last month had read an article about how currently the most popular movies in China are those with “buddy love” storylines. I’d been noticing lately that a lot of the movies and series I have started to prefer as well have had a strong bromance and could see why they would do well.

Good examples of the bromance element can be found in Legend of the Demon Cat and Detective Chinatown 2. Because both movies are basically buddy cop murder mysteries and had a lot of common elements, despite taking place in different time periods and being different genres (historical drama versus modern comedy), I decided to review them together.

Huang Xuan and Shota Sometani’s Yao Mao Zhuan releases first stills

The irony of the order of posts to come out. Upcoming Japan and China collaborated sci-fi movie, Yao Mao Zhuan aka The Legend of Cat Demon (妖猫传) releases its first batch of stills. The story is inspired from Yumemakura Baku’s novel, “Samon Kukai Tou no Kuni nite Oni to Utagesu,” following the investigation of a cat demon and the mysterious deaths during the Tang Dynasty with the climax being the forecast of the emperor’s death. Japanese actor Shota Sometani (XXXHOLiC) is set to play the monk and Huang Xuan (The Interpreter) will join hands as a poet in charge of unveiling supernatural occurrences. A lot of time, budget, and effort were spent to polish the script and build a masterpiece set.

Zhao Li Ying in the running for film project Yao Mao Zhuan

Still not officially confirmed but the piece of information did make a splash in the news sites. The funny thing is Angelababy’s name was circulated first in the beginning of this year. Lol. Remember the fiasco with Bi Yao? Tsk! If this news rings true, she will get to work with many big names in the film industry. Expand those credentials! Yao Mao Zhuan (妖猫传 or in English as Legend of the Demon Cat) is a film project from director Chen Kai Ge (Monk Comes Down the Mountain, Forever Enthralled) and famed writer Wang Hui Ling (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Lust Caution, The Crossing). Attached along with her name is Chen Kun and TFBoys’ Wang Jun Kai. Since it’s based on a Japanese novel, (which I cannot find anywhere!) the production team will be inviting Japanese actors to cooperate as well. It’s said they have worked for five years to polish the script and filming will begin in the latter half of 2016. The story takes place in the Tang Dynasty and they are working to build a stunning masterpiece set.
