Court Lady (骊歌行) is an upcoming period drama based on the unfinished novel written by Feng Nong (General and I), who then proceeded to finish the story through this drama script. Interesting. That means there won’t be novel fans cursing at the differences? Lol. The story takes place during the Tang Dynasty and follows the romance between a good-for-nothing spoiled hero and our talented heroine who pushes him out of his lazy chair. Our hero is famous for having no dreams and no ambitions, satisfied with wasting away his father’s money until a chance encounter with the heroine. She likes a man of direction and talents and that shall be his motivation to grow and mature but soon he begins to realize the instability of the Tang Empire, motivating him further. He spurs into action, becoming a military commander to protect the borders and stop illegal smuggling. In the meantime, our heroine works her way up in the palace as a weaver, facing dangers that threaten her and her family.
Imperial Cuisine (尚食) is an upcoming historical drama featuring Wu Jin Yan, Xu Kai, and Wang Yi Zhe. It is set during Yongle’s years of the Ming dynasty as the emperor decides to open up the food bureau for female recruits. Our female lead is accepted, along with our male lead and another female – both with different background, one used to be a beggar, and the other one regarded as a genius cook. The three of them work together to support and create fresh new dishes incorporating medicines and savored flavors of the past. However, as our female lead rises up the ladder, the true meaning of ‘food’ hits her; it’s a bridge connecting people and different cultures. She gives up competing in the prestigious food competition and leaves the palace to join the common people in spreading the love for Chinese cuisines.
Our lead couple has worked together plenty of times before (not surprising since both are under Yumama), Untouchable Lovers, Story of Yanxi Palace, and Zhao Ge (not aired yet). But they weren’t always a couple.
Upcoming ancient detective drama Maiden Holmes (少女大人) stars Chen Yao and Zhang Ling He. Our hero is Prince of Qi who was ambushed during a crucial battle and lost all his men. Held accountable for the loss, he was later discharged from his title and travels under a different name with the aim to find out what happened. He stays at a small town and forms a detective squad with our female lead (a rising constable on a mission to overturn a case for her family) and two others, solving crimes and eventually getting involved with the royal schemes.
Chen Yao has two dramas out at the same time where she’s cross-dressing in both; one modern, one ancient!
Yumama is back and this time, he decided to go historical comedy drama. Song of Youth (玉楼春) is a female-centric drama led by Bai Lu, alongside with Jin Chen, Zheng Qiu Hong, Huang Xin Yao, and special guest appearances in Yang Rong, Qiao Xin, and more to be announced. The story takes place during the Ming Dynasty and Bai Lu plays a miss from an official family. Her father is accused of corruption and she becomes a fallen miss after he’s executed. To make a living, she begins learning drama at a local street performance house (?), where she meets a rich grandson played by Wang Yi Zhe. He, of course, falls in love at first sight with her. And to clear her dad’s name, she disguises as a male to take the imperial test (?) But because she’s a female, she naturally fails the section where they examine your body…. But no worries, her rich admirer sneaks in to help and clear her father’s name. Once his family gets a wind of her identity/status, they try to break up the two. He doesn’t give up while she works hard on improving herself, and within a year, is able to become the top female merchant in the country. She then decides to marry into Wang Yi Zhe’s family when they are struggling. She helps stabilize the family and business, only to find out that her father-in-law is the man behind her dad’s demise and he is the one deep in corruption. Clear-headed and fair, our heroine chooses justice in the end. What do they called that? 大義滅親!
And that’s it. The synopsis reveals the whole drama. xD
The Legends is still on my watch list so for those who did watch it, Arsenal Military Academy reunites the two leads, Xu Kai and Bai Lu, in a republican setting. Reminds me a little bit of Mulan as our female lead cuts her hair and disguises as a male to attend a military school, where she tries to overcome her weaknesses and proves herself as a worthy comrade. Of course, our male lead and the quiet second male lead are in the same school as well.
Bai Lu looks very handsome with the boy hair! Xu Kai is pretty hot. Lol. Maybe I need to watch Legends ASAP!
Can we go ahead and give the title of Melo Queen to Sun Yi? After Siege In Fog, she’s back in another melo drama to wrench out some more tears, with Wallace Chung and Ma Tian Yu at her side. All Out of Love, adapted from novel Liang Sheng Wo Men Ke Bu Ke Yi Bu You Shang will hit your small screen on 9/17!
Now this is a drama worth getting hyped on just for the pure, raw talents of the cast members alone! Uncle and Young Man (大叔与少年) is the upcoming modern drama starring Zhang Jia Yi (White Deer Plain) and Zhang Yi Shan (Ten Miles of Spring Wind Can’t Compare To You) about the collision and accepting of generational conflicts and differences. Zhang Jia Yi is man fresh out of prison and has a daughter (actress Wang Yi Zhe) who is dating an unruly youngster born after the 90s and the two will naturally butt heads for both good and bad reasons. Ha. I love that Dad isn’t the usual grumpy dad, he has dirt on his bio! Yi Shan should be scared. XD
