Blades of the Guardians follows Dao Ma, the second most wanted fugitive, who accepts the dangerous mission of escorting Zhi Shilang, the empire’s most wanted fugitive. Their journey quickly spirals into a deadly chase as multiple groups pursue them through the desert. Alongside a small group of unlikely allies, they must survive relentless enemies.
This movie took me back to the golden days of traditional wuxia films. The fight choreography was excellent, beautifully choreographed sword fights, closed fist combats, and fast-paced martial arts that felt both raw and nostalgic. Every punch, kick, and swing of the blade had impact, making the action exciting from start to finish.
I was especially impressed to learn that the cast worked hard, trained and did their own stunts. Knowing that made the movie even more enjoyable.
The plot was fairly simple, but that didn’t bother me because the movie never tried to be anything more than an action-packed martial arts epic.
It was also a treat to see veteran martial arts stars like Wu Jing, Nicholas Tse, and Jet Li sharing the screen. Their presence added to the nostalgic feeling of the film.
Finally, I really enjoyed the setting. The Silk Road and desert landscapes gave the movie a unique atmosphere that complemented the story and action. I give it 8/10.
