Zhang Xin Cheng and Ding Yu Xi spice up the bromance in republican drama Archives: The Nanyang Mystery

Archives: The Nanyang Mystery (南部档案) is adapted from the novel written by Kennedy Xu from the novel series Grave Robbers’ Chronicles. Please don’t ask me if it’s sequel, spinoff, or prequel. I am a lost sheep in the world of tomb-raiding. Lol

Synopsis Per Qiyi: In the early years of the Republic of China era, a bizarre murder case known as “Water Ghost Longing for Home” occurs at sea in Nanyang. Zhang Haiyan and Zhang Haixia, two staff members from the Southern Archives dispatched by the Zhang family to investigate the mysterious events, are drawn into a deadly trap used to hunt down members of the Zhang family overseas. Haixia offers his life in a scheme to break the deadlock, sending Haiyan aboard the giant ship, the Nan’an, back to Xiamen, in hopes of giving him a chance to survive. However, this turbulent voyage seems to have only just begun. A powerful warlord, a naive and persistent young accountant, and a dearest friend he has not seen for ten years… Haiyan faces a series of unexpected events alone, and the moment he sets foot in Xiamen, the true destiny of the two young men begin to unfold…

The decision to airdrop 6 episodes today 6/11 is very odd. I have included episode 1 in the comment section in case you want to check it out ASAP.

  1. Episode 1:

  2. Been checking the promos on this one for a few days, and presuming it would probably drop some time in July. I also presumed we’d be getting a few more promo pieces before it did as, let’s face it, it’s not like it stars a bunch of unknowns.

Imagine my shock, and everyone else’s, to suddenly check iQIYI and have the drama premiere this morning. Weird as EF.

Of course, as the gossip starts, some people are saying there was no fanfare because “it could be mistaken for a BL drama”, and we all know what Chinese are like about those right now.

I call b.s. on that as, just because it stars two men, why do these weirdos suddenly assume it’s BL or could even be mistaken as such? 🙂

Especially as it’s not adapted from a BL novel/manhua either.

In other words, nobody seems to know why this one suddenly arrived out of the blue. But, after watching the first episode, and heading soon to the second as it’s a heckuva lot of fun so far, I’ve gotta say I’m not complaining. Are you watching it?

    1. Hi Michelle!

I haven’t started yet, waiting for more episodes and hopefully I can binge later! Is it good beyond the initial episodes?

      1. Hey,

What I’ve watched so far is actually very good. I’m still only 6 episodes in as I got side-tracked with The First Jasmine, with both The Vendetta of An and Love Beyond the Grave that needed finishing, a couple of BL J-dramas and life in general 🙂 But the episodes I have watched are a helluva lot of fun, it’s well-written, some of the scenes are hilarious, and the two leads have superb chemistry. The rest of the cast is solid too.

All in all, as fast-paced adventure dramas go with decent CGI, an interesting plot and set in an intriguing era (Republican), it’s a satisfying watch. Will be getting back to it later on tonight and hope to catch up soon. Hope you enjoy it when you do start watching!

  3. Douban score is out! Keep in mind score can change over time, either up or down.

What do you think?
