First Impression: The Immortal Ascension (Cdrama, 2025)

After what felt like a decade, my boy Yang Yang has returned to the Ancient Drama genre, and this time, it’s an adaptation of a web novel/donghua, of the same name, more or less. I’ve heard the source material was epic, but who knows. I’m here to review this adaptation only.

So, The Immortal Ascension, I’m 19 episodes in so far as of this review. The last time I wrote one of these review, it was for a dumb drama that I hated as much as the hate I got for hating it. But let’s not go there. How is Immortal Ascension so far? Well, in short, it’s good, so far. I’m enjoying it. Enough to write an early impression.

Stills:

What is the story about? It’s about Yang Yang looking pretty and cultivating. That’s it. That’s the plot. No, that’s not the plot, but it’s kinda the plot. It’s about this guy named Han Li, who came from a poor background, going on a journey to become an immortal. Cause why not? Being an Immortal is awesome. You get to look pretty forever. Aging sucks. We hate aging.

This is a story about an ordinary person dealing with extraordinary things.

Let’s talk about the characters.

Yang Yang plays Han Li, Han Li is the type of character who is cool, calm, smart, keep things to himself, and when push comes to shove, he doesn’t push or shove, he’ll just wait till you fall and he’ll loot you dry. He’s great. And Yang Yang plays him to perfection. Yang Yang is a great actor. He looks good, too. In my next life, I want to be as cool as Yang Yang. I’ll be Yang Yang Yang, that’s three times the Yang.

This feels like a fangirl Yang Yang review, more so than the drama. But I’m not a girl.

Anyways, speaking of girls (look at that epic transition, I’m a good salesman) there’s quite a few female characters in this show, but they don’t really do much. Or rather, they aren’t given much screentime. But for the few screentime they are in, I think all the ladies are fine. I don’t really mind the female characters. They’re like support roles to our hero. Mostly.

But this is a one-man show. So it’s only fitting that this review is also a one-man review.

Watch for the cool flying and action. Trust me, it’s fun. I think this drama has some of the best depictions of flying. They fly like Dragon Ball Z characters. It’s so cool to see in live-action. It’s like they are swimming, but instead of under the sea, it’s through the air.

Especially of this scale, done in this fashion. There’s plenty enough action as well for the 19 eps I have seen. It’s great stuff.

Or, shall I say, unique?

Speaking of unique, the villains. (Look at that salesman’s skills at play again)

There are a few villains and sub-villains here and there, but the main highlight is this demon guy. I thought he started off a little weird and filler, but then as the show progressed, I enjoyed watching his charisma on screen. He laughs funny, and also, he’s crazy. He is surrounded by dumb goons, but his interaction with them is fun to watch. Even though he’s evil, you can’t take him seriously, but when he does get serious, he’s pretty unhinged. I like it.

He’s like me when it comes to writing reviews. Unhinged.

Anyway, I think this is good enough. I’m writing in the dead of night, cause I’m a dedicated drama watcher. And when I like something, I write about it. (Most time I write about what I hate, though)

Well, 19 eps in, I’m enjoying it a lot. Go watch it. I would go as far as saying, not only is Immortal Ascension my favorite Yang Yang’s work to date, but it’s also my favorite drama this year. (So far) (Tales of Dark River, Journey of Legend, where are you all at?)

Until then, this is it for now.

Thank you for reading my review. Finally, I get to write about something I enjoyed. It’s been a while. Go watch the show, I recommend it. If you’re a Yang Yang fan, you probably built a time-travel machine and traveled to the future to finish this drama ten times over already, so I don’t need to recommend it to you.

How’s the ending? No, keep the spoilers to yourself.

I’m not sure if I would do an update to this review. But I doubt the remaining half would suck. I’m sure it won’t.

Ok, I’m done.

Bye bye!

I am there with you GeGe…enjoying it a lot, love YangYang as HanLi and the villain is interesting character too…and the ladies, I don’t really bother with them, because HanLi doesn’t too ha ha ha. I am here as the donghua lover and for the great fighting scenes and cultivation progress.

What do you think?
