When Destiny Brings the Demon (献鱼) is adapted from the novel Offering Salted Fish to Master written by Fu Hua.
Synopsis from Youku: Modern-day office drone Zou Yan accidentally stumbles into the world of cultivation and wakes up as Liao Tingyan, a disciple of the Qinggutian Sect. She’s soon selected to serve the reclusive Grandmaster Sima Jiao, a powerful cultivator who’s been secretly sealed inside a mountain for 500 years. Twisted by isolation and rage, he’s cold, hot-tempered, and bent on revenge. Liao Tingyan doesn’t konw that “her” original identity is a demonic assassin. But to his surprise, she shows no ill will, no ambition, and no desire at all. Her nature fascinates him. Thus begins an unlikely romance between a villainous immortal and a healing-type “slacker,” a connection that defies fate and spans lifetimes.

The original story follows a transmigration plot, but it is unlikely this part will be retained in the adaptation. The narrative is set in a fictional cultivation world. Liao Ting Yan is a low-ranking, new disciple of a prominent school chosen to be part of an elite group of female disciples “offered” to serve Lord Ci Zang, a legendary figure emerging from his 500-year closed-door cultivation. He sits on top of the food chain here, with his status as a senior master / ancestor / high cultivation level / noble descent. Problem is, he is also a moody, unpredictable, and blood-thirsty male lead with a scary giant snake ride. While the other girls strive to win his favour, Ting Yan prefers to play dead and stay low key. However, there’s more to our male lead than meets the eye and there are multiple forces at play in the usual conspiracy stuff that harkens back to the male lead’s past. Despite Ting Yan’s attempt to stay alive and mind her own business, she becomes inexplicably and unexpectedly entangled in the unfolding events.
Both characters are really likeable. Ting Yan is a breath of fresh air to those who are tired of the usual plucky, hardworking heroines. Her monologues are hilarious, though I’m not sure how well that will translate in the drama version. Male lead is the standard “gorgeous, strong, pitiful” character, but the dynamic between the two characters especially in the beginning is very enjoyable. If they adapt this well, it could be a fun watch. [Please Do Not Take Out of AVV.]
