This is Wuxia Gege back to you with another review. Today, I will review Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.

In Short
It’s a better love story than Twilight, even though there’s no romance in here. But there is love, lots of it. The love between brothers. And family. And people. (I just had to bring in Twilight, because it’s impossible not to. Deal with it, Edward fans. Keep sparkling ☆)

Now, onto the long review. Hopefully not, I don’t want to bore you readers, and I don’t want to write too long. Writing sucks. (I was asked to write this, and I’m too sweet to say no. And this movie was awesome!)

So what is this movie about? In short, it’s a love letter/throwback to classic HK cinemas. You know, the type with gangsters and such. (No toothpick in mouth, no long coats, no Chow Yun Fat, but you get the idea.)

Actual Synopsis
A drifter (played by Raymond Lam) (I will not spoil his character name, for reasons, you’ll figure it out when watching the movie) takes refuge in a walled city, Kowloon, after being chased by gangsters. There he finds more to life within the walls than the world outside knows of.

That’s the gist of the story. Now, onto the review.

Disclaimer: In the words of a modest person, this review is only my opinion, it does not represent the opinions of A Virtual Voyage as a whole. However, as I am not a modest person, this review represents myself and AVV. Because my opinion is all that counts.

Take that, you modest people!

Now how should I review this movie without spoiling it? I mean, there’s a whole lot to unpack here. I’ll just tread carefully. Let’s start with the good.

The Good
The characters are interesting, the setting is fascinating, and the story is good. Yes, there’s a story. Our young drifter finds a home in a place he did not expect. He had stumbled upon it accidentally and then befriended all the people there in the walled city. It’s a good backdrop to set up all the action that follow. Yes, the second half is mostly all action. That is what people came for, right? The action. How was it? Well, you got the legendary Sammo Hung here. Expect great actions. There’s plenty of that butt-kicking stuff to go around.

What impressed me most about the action is that it’s very hand-to-hand and brutal, but also clean at the same time. What I’m trying to say is that the action was done VERY well. If you came here for the action, you should walk away happy.

The characters are great too. They have a lot of heart. There’s the quiet one, the lively one, the mysterious one, the kick-butt one (they all kick butt), what more can I say? This is one of those movies where the ensemble cast just brings their A-game. Especially the veterans. This is their movie, passing the torch to the younger generation. The veterans are, Louis Koo, Sammo Hung, Richie Ren, and Aaron Kwok. Come on. You can’t beat that. Do they all get to do something fun and crazy? Yes.

This is easily the coolest guy in the movie. That’s facts!

The Bad
There’s none. Not to me anyway. I tried thinking about some, but I can’t find any. And I’m the king of throwing dirt. The only bad here is, I find no bad.

And that’s the end of the review. Go home.

Overall Take
Go watch this movie. It’s great. As the kids would say, ‘This is peak cinema’. You won’t be disappointed. Worst case scenario, you might. In that case, that’s on you for having poor taste. 🤪 The movie is great. The action is great. The drama is great. The fight scenes are awesome. Especially the last fight, it’s so good. I’ve seen this movie 3 times already, and planning to own it and watch it many more times. It’s a throwback to classic HK cinema. Long live HK cinema. This movie does feel like a love letter to the genre. And that song at the end credit? Chef’s kiss. I cried. Manly tears. Big brother’s tears. Just cause it feels so nostalgic. Not so much the song or the movie itself, but the feelings.

I highly recommend this movie to HK movie fans. Or just action/martial arts movie fans in general.

A 10/10.

Fun Facts: Did you know two Condor Heroes are in this movie? Both Louis Koo and Richie Ren played Yang Guo in the past. Now you know.

Bye Bye!

This song is a melancholic masterpiece full of nostalgic and deep longing for a feeling long past.
