Cheng Yi and Zhang Yu Xi’s The Promise of Chang’an changes name to Yu Jun Ge ahead of broadcast

Why do these names sound familiar…. Lol.

Can someone save Cheng Yi? He’s been stuck in Chang An since foreeeeveer!

From Meng Xing Chang An/The Promise of Chang’an (梦醒长安), the name has been changed to Yu Jun Ge (与君歌). It is based on the novel written by Zi Fei Hua and follows the story of two sisters, played by Zhang Yu Xi and Xuan Lu, who were ripped apart by politics when they were younger, and reunited on opposing sides as adults. The story is set during the Tang Dynasty under Emperor Wenzong’s rule where powerful eunuchs run the court. He and other government officials plan to get rid of Eunuch Chou Shi Liang (Mickey He) but their plan failed, leading to the execution of prime minister Wang Ya’s family, leaving only two surviving granddaughters. They are separated and raised by different camps, meeting seven years later, when the new Emperor (Cheng Yi) launches the two camps against each other.

Huh, lots of familiar faces here. I didn’t realize more than half the cast also starred in Love in Redemption.

The main leads plus three others (not including Xuan Lu and Han Dong and maybe Mickey He) are from H&R Century Pictures which is a company that took part in the production and also did Love and Redemption

They’ve changed the name of Cheng Yi’s character from Li Yan (Emperor Wuzong) to Qi Yan, so no idea if it’s actually be a Tang Dynasty drama anymore.

Lol.. I dont know why they just changed the name even though the clothes are clearly Tang, what makes it not Tang now? It still can be in the Tang Dynasty with just made up characters, like always with palace dramas.

They changed the names in order to pass censorship because there’s a specific rule pertaining to historical dramas that feature real people. Actual recorded history can’t be altered.

With harem dramas, it’s easier to tweak their stories because most concubines lives weren’t recorded in history with lots of details. As long as the main and recorded events in history aren’t changed, scriptwriters have the freedom to play around with storylines.

For this drama in particular, if the ML wasn’t a Tang Emperor but a fictional rich dude, they wouldn’t have to change his name. I read that the trailer already showed that things deviated a bit from history. That said, all the historical figures have been given new names thus making the time period ambivalent.

But the thing is they can tweak his name and he becomes a made up King in the Tang period.

I just don’t understand why it’s not a tang period drama when they are still clearly dressed in Tang clothing. Lols

It shouldnt matter if its Tang or Ming, if the emperor is already made up.

That would not pass with the censors. Because rules/emperors in the Tang and its surrounding nations are well recorded in history, they can’t just make up a king. Again, this is against the censorship rule of tweaking the lives of historical figures.

I’m not sure if you’ve already started watching but they’ve already changed the dynasty to Xing, a fictional one. So no, this isn’t a Tang drama anymore.

          *tweaking historical figures and history

This actually happens more common than we think. Like with the recent Xu Kai and Li Yitong drama Court Lady. The original Chinese title included Great Tang. They changed it in order to pass censorship.

Same with Ballad of the Desert, Eddie Peng’s character was originally named Huo Qubing but it was changed to Wei Wuji so it could air.

So yeah the rules are a bit strict when it comes to historical dramas. You can’t add a made up ruler to a recorded dynasty, but you also can’t tweak their recorded history either. This is why a lot of novels and dramas these days are set in fictional dynasties and countries. The downside is that people who aren’t familiar with Chinese history will actually think these dynasties and countries existed.

This reminds of an older tvb drama that takes place in the Qing dynasty, with Julian Cheung.
