Aw those little stars for interest meter are cute~
Will check out Qing Luo (like a few eps) and Chang’An Memories. For others I guess I’ll wait until they air and see the reviews

But I feel bad when I don’t give out stars, making the other dramas look sad without the bling blind. Lol.

Looking forward to A Love Never Lost and the Light On series the most. Will check Chang An Memories, The Rebel, Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty and Luoyang when they come out. Luoyang is based on Ma Boyoung novel and honestly I’ve been not very impressed with the way the dramas based on his novels are written (haven’t seen Antique one though), despite them including some really interesting elements. The rest don’t look like my cup of tea and even so I think I’ve had enough supplies to last till next year lol. I hope they reduce the length for modern urban dramas because unlike their costume ones, the storytelling for modern dramas very often suffer from the length, even when they’re just within the range of 30 or 40 episodes.

I do have to agree about the novel-to-drama adaptations of MBY’s novels doing not well onscreen.

I have supplies for the next ten years since I watch dramas at 0.00000000000000000000000001 rate. XD

For Ma Boyong, Longest day of chang’an didn’t work out for you? I think its pacing could be much better and the ending was butchered but it was pretty well received domestically. I’ve watched Mysteries of Antique but I just find the subject matter neat, it’s another case (like Tientsin Mystic) where I think s2 is better than s1 despite the cast change, I like the series fairly well. I’m not optimistic about Luoyang but we’ll see. There’s another drama with a similar name though, Feng Qi Long Xi 风起陇西, with a cast + production team that might be more your pace, Chen Kun + Bai Yu, BUT it has angelababy and Sun Yi, haven’t seen Sun Yi in anything, mostly praying AB doesn’t appear too much.

The modern drama length is largely still due to profit reason, more episodes sell for more money. If you want shorter episodes, you basically have to look at small budget romcoms and a lot of them are still 24 ep. The one that air on tv are usually around 40 ep, tv dramas have been bombing this year though. I’m not sure if some of the Light On series even made back the money they invested in, thankfully Bad Kids probably did? and it has lasting effects on iQiyi producing more shorter series + investing in more projects.

I actually liked Longest Day because it did feel like a proper political action thriller set in ancient setting and it was a rather refreshing approach to historical genre not just among cdramas, fiction or otherwise. But I also feel that it didn’t handle its characters well and had them running around padding the runtime without much purpose/contribution to the plot or even logic behind their actions, as if the writers just want some things to happen so they bend common sense and the rules they’ve set up themselves. It can be incredibly detailed and thorough when it wanted to be so when it’s being illogical and contrived it’s especially jarring. The ending is just one example of it. But great that it’s well-received because I don’t mind having more like this, even with its flaws I still enjoyed it. I don’t know which part I don’t like is from the novel and which is original, but still the sour impression remained, and it makes it difficult for me to expect great things to come out from other MBY’s novels adaptation. My sentiment towards Chen Kun’s drama is pretty much the same with my sentiment towards Luoyang haha, even though casting-wise Huang Xuan alone still edges Chen Kun + Bai Yu combined for me xD

As a corporate slave myself I understand the importance of bringing profit, it’s just my pipe dream for short dramas to become a norm lol, as purely a consumer I very much prefer to enjoy my dramas in their best form. I’m seeing more ‘mini-dramas’ are in production not just by iQiyi so here I was thinking they must see some potential for profit/worthy market there?

How well a novel adapts is just highly dependent on the production team. The only two author that has been lucky when it comes to adaptations is Gu Man (romance, Boss & Me, My Sunshine, Love O2O) and Zi Jin Chen (thriller, Burning Ice, Bad Kids, Long Night). My Sunshine and Love O2O share a producer and her team is at iqiyi, while the latter three were helmed by vice CEO of iqiyi I believe. For the thrillers, at least the first two, she specifically wanted to make webdrama to be movie quality, I get the impression it’s movie budget too, which is A LOT. Iqiyi is in the most debt out of the three big platforms cos all the huge projects they invest in (a lot of them just bomb quietly) and big dramas they bought from other companies. Anyways for Long Xi, I’d expect its production level to be smidge higher than Luo Yang, it’s hard to say how well it comes out though since lol script and pacing control is hardest to get right.

Other companies are vying for the short dramas because small budget dramas + short dramas have been the ones that’s been doing well lately. We are also finally shifting away from leaning heavily on popular actors regardless if they fit the role + scriptwriters are given more emphasis, so yeah there’s hope? I do think Hunan producing short thriller-like dramas are desperate attempt to save itself, The online platforms are in cycle of producing dramas themselves and airing it themselves, with increase reliance on internet and the younger generation rarely turn on tv, they have to quickly adopt something new to retain their audience.

Damn, knowing the leads’ ending already in Chang’An Memories makes the trailer hard to watch already. I’m not sure I can devote 30epi in the past, but then again that makes watching Forever &Ever much more meaningful.

I hope the past will wreck my heart!! Lol!!

I like Bai Lu and Ren Jialun but Beautiful Bones was one that I kept trying to read and dropped several times. Couldn’t get into the story. Actually, all of MBFB’s books are like that for me so I I hope this drama will at least reel me in. Hopefully it does the book justice so I won’t have to attempt to read it again. =P

Not sure when we’ll get definite air dates for these dramas. Pretty sure we’ll just see them randomly start airing out of nowhere in true Cdramaland fashion. Lol.
