Dou Luo Continent (Soul Land) with Xiao Zhan and Wu Xuan Yi begins airing today ~

It was rumored, but never confirmed, and here it is. Lol.

Let me copy and paste what I wrote last year: Dou Luo Continent is an adaptation of the Chinese web novel of the same name written by Tang Jia San Shao. Our hero is Tang San, considered a prodigy in the Tang Sect, a sect specializing in poisons and weapons. He commits suicide after entering the forbidden place for inner sect disciples and gaining the knowledge of the Sect. He feels guilty and kills himself, but is reborn in Soul Land (title of the novel), with his memories intact (dun, dun, dun). In the new land, he is raised by an alcoholic father and remains tenacious in mastering new skills. In Soul Land, each individual possesses an innate spirit, which one can cultivate and strengthen, becoming a Spirit Master, a well-regarded profession. Our hero has two.

The wolverine guys with the claws killed me. SO FAKE. LOL.

Not sure how I feel. XZ’s dubbing is strange compared to the rest of the cast too…

Main girl is doing nothing for me. Who is she?

      That’s Xiao Zhan’s own voice

Woohoo here for Xiao Zhan 🙂 So nice to hear his own voice!
So far I like Tang San, his dad, and his teacher the best. His teacher has the best powers hahaha the farting dog! Both his dad and teacher are hidden badasses so I hope they show up more.
The special effects look nice, especially Tang San’s special plant powers.

No idea who the main girl is but she’s a bit over the top… I wouldn’t mind if she had less screen time…

The background music is nice but the opening and ending theme songs are quite bad. They don’t match the story and they’re not sung well. The ending song is terrible, like the singer is breathless the entire song! I seriously don’t think the people who sang the opening/ending theme songs are professional singers because even the kids from my local choir can sing better… Oh well I’ll just skip the opening/ending bits.

The cinematography is beautiful (especially with scenery and the changing of the seasons in episode 1, wow that is beautiful).

I hope new episodes have more action because I want to see Tang San kick ass. I like his interaction with his dad and teacher (because they’re awesome). His teacher’s farting dog makes me laugh every time hahaha.

In the beginning I though they spent all their money on CGIs and had nothing left to invest in decorations and world building. I was under impression they filmed first 10-12 eps in some 3-4 generic locations: there were no memorable scenic shots, very few transitions, no wide shots whatsoever – I mean this is fantasy drama, I wasn’t expecting air shots of New Zealand mountains or anything but maybe I was. ^^; The changing of the seasons in episode 1 was very beautiful and felt like a fluke the more it went, like the only creative attempt from the editing team, since after that for dozens of eps editing was glaringly choppy. This being said, now at episode 17+ it is getting remarkably better. The whole plot is also picking up and gets you emotionally invested in the heroes like a good shounen should do. I admit I have started watching for XZ and know nothing of the source material, so I’m taking the drama as it is, at a face value. Can’t comment on how well plot is sticking to the book – heard it doesn’t? xD

XZ acting I think is overall good, maybe a little bit over/under in the beginning, but doesn’t affect the perception as a whole. For the dubbing – wow new experience to hear actor’s own voice! I believe it’s his first time doing his own dubbing? There are sure some difference between him and the rest of voice actors, but I’m not sure is it due to him, production quality, smth else? I would assume those differences to be smoothed during the post-production process.

For the main girl – I think Xuan Yi does okay? I like her character, cute, bubbly, not annoying and not utterly helpless like all other heroines in cdramas tend to be. Though there is this plot twist in ep 25-26, so I hope it doesn’t affect her character too much.. Maybe they’re trying to save Tang San some face, so he can have a chance to protect her now. xD
