BL novel Seizing Dreams (Duo Meng) begins filming with Bi Wen Jun and Wang Rui Chang

Aha! The reunion of besties from In A Class of Her Own (remake of Sungkyunkwan Scandal, so they are the SJK & YAI of the Chinese adaptation) for a BL novel-turned-drama adaptation. Original novel is written by Fei Tian Ye Xiang. I took a look at the synopsis and would like to describe it as an uplifting relief for one’s soul from the harsh reality through their dreams. The story begins with one of our male leads, Yu Hao (played by Bi Wen Jun), a hard-working college student accused of stealing a watch from a family (he’s tutoring the little girl.) We don’t know much about him yet, but a quick introduction tells us he grew up under sad circumstances. For whatever reason, his parents left him when he was younger and his sole guardian – his grandmother, died shortly after his college entrance exam. And now he’s accused of thievery. At wits’ end, he wants to end his life and misery. At that point, he meets the other male lead, known as the “General” (played by Wang Rui Chang) who advises and guides him in his dream to retrieve his totem (a shield). And that’s how the drama works. A dreamer is saved when he/she finds his totem in the dream, leading to resolutions to the problems of reality. BTW, the “General” has another identity. 😉

I was about halfway through the web novel but didn’t feel like continuing. Maybe because the audio drama stopped right there, or because the novel’s official outlet was going through another round of self-censorship removing chunks of text or locking entire chapters.

The two stories (dreams) after the initial male lead’s story/dreams contain subject matters that Chinese regulators frown upon, or ban outright – father sexually molesting his own young daughter, and the pressure felt by a gay couple leading to one to commit suicide. Even “General” acquired his abilities due to family issues and parental abuse (though, not as terrible as suffered by people he tried to help).

The lead “couple” helped victims/survivors resolve these dark psychological matters through dreams.

Don’t know how much the drama will be worth watching if it waters down or avoid these serious social issues

It totally sucks about all these upcoming BL novels turned dramas. I really hope the writer and director come up with a clever way to bypass the regulators while still addressing these serious social issues.

Presuming that drama producers look at built-in fan base and how much the work has already earned, they end up picking popular (Very popular doesn’t seem to be necessary as long as there are enough rich fans.) but difficult to faithfully adapt material.

Fei Tian Ye Xiang novels are popular but not extremely so in terms of readership numbers. However, he seems to have rich ardent fans who have “tipped” lots of money on the novels’ official publishing platform to achieve high rankings. Many have been very picky/critical/demanding when it comes to derivatives. Feels like that if a derivative is not done exactly the way they want, they would rather see it fail completely. Adding this into account, drama production team might forgo “faithfulness” in the drama adaptation, but instead, focus on attracting more fans for the leads.

Depending on the source and fanbase, at least moderate success is a guaranteed if drama is at least 70% faithful and not breaking up the leads. Unfortunately, web cdramas in general seem to be about promoting certain people than about telling a good story.

They look much better and younger in here than in In a Class of her Own…

What do you think?
