Trailers Galore from iQiYi and Tencent: Who’s The Murderer, Dear Missy, Ancient Love Poetry, Dou Luo Continent, Mirror Twin Cities, Spirit Realm

Here’s a long compilation of teasers and trailers released at various events this past week such as the iQiYi iJoy and Tencent video conference. Sorry, I can’t physically make 20+ separate posts for each of them. I think I have written about the majority before so it’s nothing new. Just a peek from different online platforms for what’s coming up next for them.

Which ones are you looking forward to?

=======> ♦ Who’s The Murderer (谁是凶手) with Zhao Li Ying, Xiao Yang, and Dong Zi Jian. This looks interesting!

=======> ♦ New longer trailer for The Legend of Fei (有翡) with Zhao Li Ying and Wang Yi Bo. Guys, I’m finally feeling positive about this drama. You Fei doesn’t seem as cold as her character in Princess Agents. Thanks goodness! The short trailer had me worried cause all I saw was her cold, expressionless eyes. Lol.

=======> ♦ Ancient Love Poetry (千古玦尘) with Zhou Dong Yu and Xu Kai. ZDY really looks like a little drunk fairy when she’s downing the alcohol. I’m unsure about this one….hoping there’s a lot of depth to it and it’s not just him missing/vying for her for thousands of years.

=======> ♦ Soul Land/Dou Luo Continent (斗罗大陆) with Xiao Zhan and Wu Xuan Yi. I wrote about this here.

=======> ♦ Double Tap (双塔) with Duan Yi Hong and Da Peng.

=======> ♦ Mirror Twin Cities (镜双城) with Li Yi Feng and Yukee Chen. The scenery looks beautiful but LYF’s vibe reminds me of The Legend of Chusen. Wrote about it here.

=======> ♦ Novoland: Pearl Eclipse (九州·斛珠夫人) with Yang Mi and William Chan. Previous Post.

=======> ♦ Farewell to Arms (烽烟尽处) with Zhang Han and Jiao Jun Yan.

=======> ♦ Spirit Realm (灵域) with Fan Cheng Cheng and Cheng Xiao. It’s based on an online novel written by Ni Cang Tian, which also has a game and animation version as well.

=======> ♦ Please 8 Hours (拜托了8小时) with Tong Meng Shi, Xiao Yan, and Ren Yan Kai. Wuxia world crashes with modern day!

=======> ♦ Vacation of Love (假日暖洋洋) with Yao Chen and Bai Yu. Why does this look like Crazy Rich Asians on vacation. Lol.

=======> ♦ Qing Qing Wo Xin or Qing Qing My Heart (卿卿我心) with Cheng Xiao and Gu Jia Cheng.

=======> ♦ Ace Force (王牌部队) with Huang Jing Yu and Xiao Zhan.

=======> ♦ Out of The Dream (梦见狮子) with Yao Chi and Chen Yu Si.

=======> ♦ Loose adaptation of American TV Show Gossip Girl, Dear Missy (了不起的女孩) with Li Yi Tong and Gina Jin. This looks much more positive for female friends.

=======> ♦ My Treasure (生活家) with Liu Min Tao and Wen Qi.

=======> ♦ A Little Dilemma (小舍得) with Song Jia, Tong Da Wei, and Jiang Xin.

=======> ♦ You Complete Me (小风暴) with Hu Yi Tian and Qiao Xin.

=======> ♦ My Heroic Husband (赘婿) with Guo Qi Lin and Song Yi.

=======> ♦ A Love Never Lost (人生若如初见) with Li Xian and Chun Xia.

=======> ♦ The Master of Cheongsam (一剪芳华) with Zhang Hao Wei and Gai Yue Xi.

=======> ♦ Remake of 2002’s Hot Girls, Brilliant Girls (涩女郎) with Yin Tao, Song Yi, and Zhao Jin Mai.

I’m done with hyping stuffs based on cinematography shown in the trailer alone after Tribes and Empires and Eagle Flag but have to say the one that got my most attention is A Love Never Lost… because of its cinematography lol. Next is Legend of Fei despite looking on the cheap side compares to other big production dramas. I’m always down for well made modern wuxia which i hope it turns out to be. I’m of two minds regarding Dou Luo Continent since on one hand it’s written by Wang Juan but I couldn’t get into his idol/youth dramas Young Blood and Eagles and Youngsters. It also reminds me of FBS/Martial Universe which didn’t leave good impression on me. My Heroic Husband interests me despite being rather vague on the premise because a production that doesn’t have traditionally handsome and popular actor as a lead in current climate of c-ent industry must have lot of confidence in its script lol. Lastly I’m hoping for Double Tap and Who’s the Murderer to deliver, yay for more 12 eps cdramas!

I’ll probably check at least the first episodes of most of these though.

A Love Never Lost have a very promising production team, I noticed it before the cast was even announced. The director is Day & Night’s director, scriptwriter 1 is Han Wu Da Di + https://mydramalist.com/69793-the-road-we-have-taken + https://mydramalist.com/71637-drawing-sword + Young Martial’s scriptwriter + nomations for flying asparas & magnolia, really really impressive resume. scriptwriter 2 (from baidu, it’s not on douban) is Imminent Crisis (the one with twin Wallace Chung) + Disguiser + https://mydramalist.com/26067-spy-hunter ‘s original author and scriptwriter, her novels are apparently better than her scripts, I’ve only seen the first two, there’s some minor script/characterisation issues, but I liked both dramas. Baidu have another scriptwriter listed but I can’t find anything on them. Casting-wise, everyone seems ok except maybe Wei Daxun, oh well. Not really the kind of drama I normally watch from get go, but for the production team, I just might.

Douluo Dalu is based on a novel, your impression of FBS/MU is entirely on point cos that’s what the novel genre is, it’s fairly popular and hilariously long, the drama will heavily rely on good special effects, which looks merely okay especially compared to the winning animated version. Wang Juan did adapt Joy of Life pretty well, so will probably be better than FBS/MU in terms of adaptations
but the JoL and DLDL’s novels are fairly different beast. E&Y wasn’t really his work by the way, he was more like a consultant and might have gave some ideas. Young Blood’s beginning was def his and he’s the head writer, some of the later arcs smaller details aren’t him though since there were several scriptwriter credited. You can probably just sit on it till there’s feedback.

My Heroic Husband’s casting choice is……..really questionable. The male lead is actually pretty popular with the general audience due to JoL + so many variety shows where he’s fairly fun. But he doesn’t really fit the synopsis’s male lead, oh well it’s not like most IP’s leads fit their characters. Director has My Amazing Boyfriend, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, When We Were Young, Miss Fischer’s Murder Mysteries under his belt, I’ve watched none of these but they were all fairly well received, fluff and youth dramas mainly, except Miss Fischer which is light hearted too. There’s whole bunch of scriptwriters on baidu, which is super questionable, the first and most notable is First Half of My Life’s scriptwriter which is mhmmmmmm, she’s also scriptwriter for Liu Shishi & Ni Ni’s My Best Friend’s Story + Hu Ge’s Blossoms and bunch of other dramas, where does she find the time???? The novel is also incomplete and still serialising, sitting at 4.9mil characters, so roughly the length of all of JoL damn.

A Love Never Lost: seems like an impressive body of work for the 1st screenwriter though sadly I haven’t watched any of them due to lack of subs. From the second I’ve only seen Disguiser which really only shines in terms of characterizations and relationship dynamic that wouldn’t have worked if not for the cast imo. I still believe Hu Ge is a miscast as Ming Tai though lol. But I definitely grow more confident for the drama so thanks for the info, as always.
Wang Juan: So he didn’t write EnY, no wonder! I find it to be very, very pedestrian. I mean, even if I didn’t end up liking Young Blood I still can see some qualities that set it apart from other dramas, like with how charismatic and sensible the villain was.
Heroic Husband: Seems I really don’t know who’s and who’s not popular in China lol. Is this going to have multiple seasons too?

scriptwriter 1’s work isn’t really the kind that attract subbers few years back, so i’m not surprised, and his more impressive works were way before subs were really a thing too. I’m with you on Hu Ge being miscast in Disguiser, they should have cast someone substaintially younger, or if he played it down, it would have been better. The family angle for spy dramas were pretty refreshing and I liked the double and triple agents and back & forth.

E&Y’s author is the guy that wrote Candle of Tomb series (which started the entire tomb raiding subgenre in chinese web novel scenes, Lost Tomb was initially a fanfic of the series) and Tienstin Mystic, it’s partially why it was even on my list but I still haven’t watched it. It seems more like a standard adventure-y kind of series, which makes it less unique than the other two. I’m unfamiliar with the other scriptwriters that worked on it, and these days sometimes the credited people aren’t the ones that might have wrote it = = Young Blood always felt kind of jrpg/anime-esque due to the character archetypes and way the story is structured.

No announcement on Heroic Husband, Snow Sword Stride (the one with ZRY and Wang Juan as scriptwriter) is more likely to get multi-season since that book is finished + more popular. I get the impression they are probably going to see how these two turn out before announcing s2. JoL’s three season plan was bold and paid off so far, but Ever Night’s multi season semi paid off in s1 and bombed s2. MHH, SSS, JoL are all Xinli (production company + casting) + Tencent (investor) + Yuewen (Qidian the web novel platform is under them, IP holder), Xinli & Yuewen were acquired by Tencent few years back so they are subsidiaries, this is why they share staff/cast. Ever Night have Tencent + Yuewen too but the production company is different, but Tencent have been clearly trying to do multi-season adaptation for awhile. As for Guo Qilin, lol he’s son of a one of the most well known Xiang Sheng (stand up comedy?) artist in China. His dad’s company modernised and help promote the art in 21st century, and he himself is pretty decent in it. It’s kind of hard to know this if you just follow the drama scene.

Ancient Love Poetry looks the most aesthetic pleasing! The last scene is beautiful! Storyline looks interesting, reminds me of 宸汐缘.

Idk if it’s me but I am having such bad withdrawals from FuYao and Princess Agent, so when I see YangMi and ZLY in another similar drama, I just can’t shake off how disappointed I was previously. I have a bad feeling with how You Fei and Novoland may turn out.

Oh so many dramas! The ones that stood out the most to me were:
Who’s the Murderer – cdrama thrillers have been great this year even if I didn’t like all the ones I did watch.

Dear Missy – Yes to strong female friendships. Maybe Li Yitong will finally make it big with this drama. Doesn’t seem like it has anything to do with Gossip Girl though haha.

You Complete Me – seems fun! Great to see how Qiao Xin never got type-casted as Guan Guan and instead continues to nab different sort of roles.

A Love Never Lost – haven’t watched a good republican drama in ages. The trailer looks really promising. Plus Li Xian in uniform. Heh.

My Heroic Husband – so strange to see the two leads as a couple when they were siblings in Joy of Life. But should be good given the cast and production team.

    Wow that’s a lot of trailers !

The Legend of Fei – I was looking forward to this one months ago when I saw teasers/posters but not so convinced anymore. Hope the dubbing is better in the actual drama.
Douluo Dalu – Looks pretty nice so I’ll give it a try. Already watching the animation
Vacation of Love – Can’t unsee it as Crazy Rich Asians on vacation hahahah
Out of The Dream – wow a dude with long nice hair in a modern drama. Pretty rare I think? Not sure since I don’t watch so many modern ones ^^”
My Heroic Husband – Saw a few actors from Joy of Life and it looks interesting so I’ll probably also give it a try.

The murderers and Legend of Fei of course. Excited to see the outcome after so many months in waiting.

What do you think?
