First Impression: What do you think of Ever Night 2 with Dylan Wang and Song Yi Ren?

Getting a season 2 in Cdramaland is very difficult, almost impossible, much less keeping the cast changes to a minimum. Ever Night somehow did that, not without upset fans and sides, but here we are at the premiere of Season 2. Even though I didn’t finish season 1, certain scenes still linger in my mind, which is a sure sign that I will return to finish. Looking forward to see those awesome action sequences again; in the hands of a female director (Yang Yang) no less!

I’m not watching, but based on what I saw on a couple of forums, it’s a mixed bag so far. Those coming from watching S1 mostly dislike the changes in the cast. It’s not only CFY that was replaced, but also Zoey Meng, most of the royal family, and half of the Academy brothers. There’s concern about the tone of the drama, which seems brighter than S1. (But I’m sure the show will go darker later, if it remains faithful to the book). Also disappointment because Dylan Wang and Kris Sun were dubbed.

Because I stopped watching season 1 early, I have to attachment to any character or the cast. Meng Zhi Yi not being in the cast means is a plus for me.

Ep 1 is serviceable. It did feel like there was a list of characters to check off. Dylan Wang and the female lead actress seemed comfortable together. Bad guys felt more like caricatures, like in most cdramas.

Dubbing was not done well in places. Kind of surprising since the voice actors were veteran pros. Maybe the cast on screen simply messed up speaking too much. There was also the problem that people speaking to one another in the same room didn’t sound like they were in the same room.

Still, I do plan to watch ep 2.

Any chance to get the OST like The Untamed?

I feel like Dylan’s take on Ning Que was very off putting. He has a very comical portrayal of the character. The dubbing makes him sound even more childish and immature at times of seriousness. He acts a biiiit too cute in certain situations which does not help set the tone at all. It’s such a pity considering he’s good to look at. But the changes in overall settings and tone of the drama makes it inferior to the first season. Somehow this season also looks cheaper? Did their budget drop? Season 1 was beautiful and the sceneries and backdrop were gorgeous.

What do you think?
