Love this drama! Although a lot of scenes couldn’t be included because of the censorship in China they did a great job! Can’t wait for the Ost! Thank you Kappy – I love your site:-)

It’s lovely. I adore this drama to bits. Despite the censorship I thought they did really well in conveying affinity between the brOTP. I actually like how well the subtexts turned out, because it’s adorably heart-rending without being too in-your-face (although, really, it’s still very obvious).
The ending left some questions still unanswered (like WWX never learned why LWJ has the burn mark) but their relationship on a whole has great closure. No matter how many times they separate they eventually find their way back to the other. And look at how WY’s face lit up at the sound of LZ calling his name! The script is bomb, and these two are bomb as far as I’m concerned. I went in for Xiao Zhan but came out a fan of Wang Yibo as well.

The drama was overall meh compared to the novel and the anime. All the big anticipated scenes were watered down because of the CGI and lack of budget. I realise this always happen in a lot of cdramas, sigh.
Especially during 射日之征, when WWX returned from the ‘dead’ and became YLLZ, I was so shook when I watched the anime and read the novel, but the drama changed his return scene.
But then again, for scenes that don’t require like big budget, it is exactly how I imagined it would be like when I read the novel, especially near the end.
Another 遗憾, is definitely not enough of our 忘羡. China’s restrictions 🙁
It’s a ‘watch once is enough’ drama for me; watchable but not super good.

But Xiao Zhan, he acted so well, I was so impressed. Never knew of him before, but his acting as WWX is quite good. Not awkward at all, and he handles emotional scenes really well. I was so sad for him when 师姐 died…
Heard he recently got the lead for 余生,请多指教, looking forward to him!

‘The Untamed’ is one of the best IP adaptation in recent years. Obviously, they are some bad things on the technical side that could have been better (CGI, camera work, production value, etc) BUT they become less noticeable due to the overwhelming good things, which are the casting and the script writing.

I think the casting of characters, especially the two male leads are phenomenal. Although both are green actors, they are the perfect fit for their role. It takes me at least 10 episodes to really get into the show and start feeling this way and it gets stronger and stronger as the show goes on. By the end of the show, they breathe life into their character in such a way that I think Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji will become iconic roles what would hard to recast.

I started off the show liking Xiao Zhan’s Wei Wuxian, but by the end of the show, I’ve fallen in love with Wang Yibo’s Lan Wangji. The best way I can describe this is that Xiao Zhan’s Wei Wuxian is like love at first sight, but Wang Yibo’s Lan Wangji is like love that grew over time—the more you watch, the more you like! I must applaud both actors because they did such an exceptional job!

The success of ‘The Untamed’ would not happen without such a genius script-writing. It manages to stay very true to the original work, without alerting the censorship! I love how the relationship between the two male leads are displayed in this drama and I think it went beyond the novel and donghua. The subtlety of this relationship is best described as pure, unconditional, transcendental love……which I think is important because this kind of purity of love does not feel so much in your face and it makes people who aren’t into BL more acceptable of it.

I think they both look super weird. Something’s off with the styling in this one.

    Lemme put it this way:

I’m a huge novel and animation fan, and I also work long hours

Yet I followed this drama from beginning to end and I think this is one of the BEST CDrama adaptation of a novel (especially considering the original novel is BL) in recent years.

Given that there are many censorship rules in China, the fact that the script kept the the Lan Zhan/Wei Ying love story (although subtle) including a happy ending already deserves kudos.

This is the first time I watched Xiao Zhan in anything and he is an incredibly talented actor (with a beautiful singing voice) who brought the Wei Ying character to life. He is my favorite part of the entire drama. He makes you feel the emotions like it’s real and not acting.

Yibo was a bit so-so in the beginning but he eventually got really good as Lan Zhan too. But his chemistry with Xiao Zhan is really great and it is their interactions that make the couple/love story shine.

All the supporting characters like Jiang Yanli, Wen Ning, Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, Jin Guangyao (this villain is an awesome actor), etc. are great too. This is a very talented and good-looking cast!

The actions scenes could’ve been better but the emotional scenes and characterization were wonderful. They kept very close to the novel with even dialog coming straight from the book. The music is BEAUTIFUL (one of the BEST OSTs in recent years!!!) and the scenes/cinematography is great.

I really enjoyed this drama and I even got my mom to follow this, so yeah! 😀

This drama has a lot of flaws, especially in regard with pacing in the earlier episodes and the big scale scenes. But they managed to capture the essence of wwx and lwj’s relationship and this is what makes the drama so good. I personally feel this is the adaptafion that manages to showcase wangxian’s relationship the best. Xiao zhan and wang yibo has great chemistry, and individually they fit their character so well. I’m looking forward to their future projects.

Drama of the year for me.

I started it without reading the original source and everyone in the cast were brand new to me. In retrospect, having no prior knowledge may be a good thing because I couldn’t be upset or frustrated like fans of the original work. Everything was just new and exciting, and I was pretty much hooked from the beginning.

Both leads were wonderful to watch. Xiao Zhan’s Wei Wuxian was easier to fall in love with at the beginning and then he ripped out my heart during the middle. The transformation from a carefree WWX to a hostile and sadistic Yiling Laozu was amazing to watch. Wang Yibo’s Lan Wangji, on the other hand, is like fine wine. He gets more and more expressive as the story progresses and by the end of the series I was just smitten. The stares between the two were also so intense that I wondered how this even escaped censorship. Do the censors also stare at their “brothers” for that long and with such intense emotions packed in those eyes? Lol.

Now I’m ready to dive into the novel.

I don’t think the villians were great… I feel like the actors were trying so hard to be the baddies that it just look off whenever they show their mean face, especially Xue Yang.

I think Wang Yibo can’t emote as well as Xiao Yan. Sometimes Xiao Yan tries way too hard to be cute I feel in certain scenes it’s his ‘look at me I’m acting cute’ rather than ‘I’m cute’… But nevertheless regardless of their acting I do find them good in their roles so they’re both likable actors to me.

I one actor that stood out to me the most is the Nie uncle that got his head decapitated. He’s a hard character that made u feel for him!! He played his role perfectly. He also look like Nicholas Tse and that is an added bonus!!!

  10. 21 thoughts on “Final Impression/Review: What did you think of The Untamed with Xiao Zhan and Wang Yi Bo?

As a novel fan, I’m more bothered by the plot changes (the whole founder thing or lack of) and watering down of WWX’s character than the relationship stuff. I think book WWX was a lot more flawed and interesting. Drama WWX felt a little too perfect. I would’ve like to see more WWX bonding with the young’uns in present time. We got some in the drama but it was richer in the book. Felt like the past dragged on a bit too long? It’s probably the same amount as the book but getting it all in one go vs bits in flashback.

As for the BL turned bromance, if any book can survive such a change it would be this one because the romance was pretty subtle until the very end anyway. And it was never a huge part of the story to begin with. I think with watering down WWX, the drama even made the OTP sweeter in a sense. In the book, at times I felt like WWX was pretty callous about LWJ.

All said, the actors/cast really carried the drama and them being pretty new too was impressive.

Xiao Zhan as Wei Wuxian will go down as one of the most iconic drama roles thus far. He embodied that character so well with such presence, deep understanding and dedication that no one else could’ve done better.

  12. 21 thoughts on “Final Impression/Review: What did you think of The Untamed with Xiao Zhan and Wang Yi Bo?

Lots of accurate observations from everyone! I think it was an amazing adaption of the novel and the drama stayed very close to the source material, as someone mentioned some dialogues were basically lifted straight from the novel itself! The major difference is really the whole removal of the founder of demon cultivation thing in the drama and omitting any of the explicit smutty OTP scenes. The rest where smaller changes to make it flow better on screen but with same end result (e.g villain died in a more gruesome way in the novel). Oh another difference is the “resurrection” part, in the novel the forbidden ritual to was used to bring WWX spirit into physical body of the guy who performed it but the drama went for full resurrection instead in order to be able to re-use the same actor. I prefer what they did in the drama but it was not portrayed or explained well in that first episode so it ended up just being confusing as to what was going on. People have complained about the first two episodes being rather messy and confusing which I can only agree. You are thrown into the story and the world without any understanding of how things work, not the best introduction to reel people in to be honest but that cliffhanger in second episode piqued my interest and after that I was totally hooked! So you really just have to get past that messy beginning and it got steadily more and more addicting once the story really kicked in and we got to know about the characters. Story pace was really good and it never really slowed, even the fillers only complemented the story even more.

As what most have mentioned the adapted story, the characters and the OTP is really what made this drama so awesome. WWX was likable from the very beginning and LZ grew on you like fine wine. The chemistry between WWX and LZ was amazing and their bond was profound yet subtle, the drama really did wonders on that front. I am also wondering how all those longing looks and glances got past the censorship ^^;;; In fact I think the relationship between WWX and LZ was even sweeter and compelling in the drama than in the novel. Someone mentioned that WWXs personality got watered down, I see it more that they grounded him more in personality and character in the drama. He was a bit all over the place in the novel, I ended up liking drama WXX more (and yes he is too callous with LZ in the novel). But the other relationships in the drama were really moving as well *sniff Shi Jie* It’s a story and character driven show and the drama delivers in spades on that front. All crucial and emotional scenes are there, very few stuff like the scar on LZs chest is like an Easter egg for novel readers is there but not explained… well it’s kinda impossible to explain it in the drama without leveling up the BL romance part ^^;;;; I loved that they kept the scar though! It was such a treat!

The drama wasn’t perfect though, the Special effects is mediocre (seriously the monsters were laughably bad) but that’s what you can expect from normal chinese production. Most of the actors were good but some were rather bad *cough Xue Yang*

Despite the flaws the overall drama was just too good and I was so afraid that the ending would ruin the drama for me to a certain degree. However, it was surprisingly well done and I was actually quite satisfied. The ending could be considered a bit open minded but it was with a very clear hint so definitely a happy ending and it was also appropriate considering all the subtle hints the drama had employed throughout the whole run.

Everyone should really give this drama a try, it makes me sad to read that some ppl are ditching it because it’s “bromance” adaption or refusing to watch in order to not support censorship (like what? How is that gonna help?) The drama is so much more than the BL label, it’s a pity when ppl can’t see past that or the censorship thing and give it a chance. Anyway Kappy, I highly suggest you pump this drama up to number one in your to watch drama list! You might get little sleep as a result but you will surely not regret it 🙂

I loved it! Best IP adaptation in years. I’m glad they stuck closely to the relationship of WWX and LZ. The chemistry was the best! Of course there were flaws but the drama overall was still very enjoyable.

this is definitely my 2019 drama, against all previous expectations lol. it’s mainly a character and relationship driven drama that can get you to think about it all day. Wei Wuxian is easily one of the my favorite cdrama protagonist in years. it’s an IP that manages to balance respecting the source material while navigating the laws restricting it. there were scenes that were taken verbatim from the novel and set up exactly the way I imagined it. there were of course changes from the source material that I was not so enthused about, but almost everything that was changed I knew why they had to do it. I have seen enough articles about SAFRT by now that I can pinpoint which specific censorship law correlates to which change/deletion lol
and like everyone already said but the weakest point is all the technical aspects so beware, even if it’s around what I expected for a webdrama. I didn’t think it was gonna be some grand xianxia production and I’m already grateful it even got the budget it had

This was the surprise hit of the year for me. Almost didn’t watch because I thought the BL element was odd but SO glad I gave it a try. Both male leads are absolutely gorgeous and their chemistry is out of this world. I can go on and on but definitely a must watch. The OST is really nice as well.

LOVE IT ! I didnt read the novel but im watching the anime now and going to read the novel after this! While I have heard of the actors i have never followed or seen their works. BUT i have to say i’m so amazed by the great acting!! WYB and XZ were amazing in conveying the emotions – considering WYB is only 22?!

Great script great cast, great OST!
