First Impression: What do you think of Wu Qian and Zhang Yu Jian’s I Don’t Like This World I Only Like You?

Modern drama I Don’t Like This World, I Only Like You aka Le Coup De Foudre (我不喜欢这世界,我只喜欢你) is based on the short and sweet novel written by Qiao Yi (Joey), where the story is basically her own romance with her husband, written in short, interesting anecdotes from the time they meet in school, how they get separated, reunited, and finally married. She’s a bubbly and optimistic person while he’s the cold on the outside (poisonous tongue to boot) and warm in the inside.

It stars Janice Wu Qian and Zhang Yu Jian as leads.

Very cute and heartwarming slice-of-life story! Finished 12 episodes in 2 days lol.

It’s very cute. Well… at first switches between adorable and light angsty fairly often because it flashes back to the “separated” part. Janice is consistently cute and natural, very awesome. ZYJ is on the stiff side, esp in the beginning (I’m not very far yet), but it’s not bothering me particularly much so eh I can overlook it.

It’s not like fabulous-light-your-eyes-up, but I LOVE the feeling. Very very comfortable drama. Slice-of-life so even though it’s still very cute romance, it’s much less pure-sugar-only-candy idol feel of Put Your Head on my Shoulder and more peppered with just everyday comfort. Reminds me less of squeal-awwww-I-wanna-date and more of contentment.

One flaw — I HATE the dreamy filter they have going on so far. It pops in and out and frames the scenes with a fuzzy effect but it makes things SO blurry. In a very very obnoxious and unartistic way. It makes me feel like my eyes are grimy and I need to rub them. It was ok at first but it’s consistent use is really starting to irritate me.

I don’t think it’s a dreamy filter. I think it’s a past filter, like it’s told from memory so sometimes it’s blurry because we don’t remember things exactly as they were and we always add our own bias to the way we saw things.

I love, love this drama to pieces!! The music, acting, story, everything works well here. Sometimes it is really funny, sometimes the scene makes you pensive, thinking about life and you can identify with the characters. It makes me feel like I am in high school again. It is fun, sweet and slice of life drama! Highly recommended!

I never read the book so I don’t know if Zhang Yuji’s stiffness is how the character is described in the book, or it’s his acting/interpretation. I personally find it stiff as well and that surprises me. He was great in Oriental Odyssey, and his character there is similar to Yan Mo. He and Janice also had great chemistry in AOO to the point that many viewers shipped them instead of the canon pairing. I believe Foudre now serves as a the consolation for the AOO SLS :)))

I read the book and I always imagined that Mr. F (Yan Mo) was Lanzhi’s character and Joey(Qiaoyi) was Yuanan’s character. 😊

To be honest, it’s like reading (or watching) Lanzhi and Yuanan (from oriental odyssey) in the modern set up.

The male lead is a terrible actor. I know he’s supposed to be stiff, but not like that.

I really really like Janice here. I especially enjoyed her Mo Sheng in Silent Separation but I felt that the college-age part was too short. Here in this drama, Janice brought out Zhao Qiao Yi’s bubbly personality very well. She is a joy to watch – her character is cute but not cringey. As for the male lead, his stiffness really bothered me.. The actor brings expressionless to another level. Mark Chao’s Ye Hua in 3 Lives 3 World Ten Miles of Peach Blossom was stoic and stiff, but Mark brought him alive with his micro-expressions. In Silent Separation, Luo Yunxi’s Yi Chen was supposed to be cold and distant but the actor made the character compelling. In this drama, the actor simply looks bored and disengaged all the time. EVEN in the 2018 scenes when the two of them are married. He does not even seem interested in his wife. Perhaps it is the writing or directing – I enjoyed their interaction in Oriental Odyssey but not here.

Oh, I also like Zhao Guan Chao – Qiao Yi’s brother in this show. He is playful and the siblings fight as well – but he still has a good head on his shoulders at the end of the day. 🙂

I personally don’t think male lead a bad actor. I think his character is just unapologetically cold. He says at one point that he knows he’s hard to get along with, but so what. Female lead even after marriage says that he only shows her 2 faces and they are either expressionless or disdainful. His Mom even suspected him of having autism because he just won’t engage or interact like a normal person. Granted the actor is not as good as Mark Chao at micro-expressions, but they are there, especially as he starts softening up toward female lead.

    Love love love this drama.
