Oopsie, another danmei novel turned drama and became a bromance drama instead. Winter Begonia (鬓边不是海棠红) is adapted from the novel written by Shui Ru Tian Er about the love story between a patriotic businessman and a talented opera performer, but in the drama version, they are close friends. Huang Xiao Ming plays the savvy businessman and Yin Zheng plays the opera performer, with Charmaine Sheh in the role of Ming’s wife. With the Japanese invasion in 1937, people from various arts and backgrounds gather together to protect the country and preserve the growing of arts.

Huang Xiaoming is most suitable for these Republican era dramas. He got his start as the lead in the Shanghai Bud and that character role became his trademark ever since.

Huang Xiaoming got his start as an emperor in a Han Dynasty drama and became popular until his downhill slide years later

His role in “Shanghai Bud” was more memorable to me. I remembered watching it on VCR tapes when I was growing up. My whole family loved it..

I’m into danmei novels, but unsurprisingly neither into Huang XiaoMing nor YuZheng (sorry to YinZheng). Very true to YuZheng to pounce on the next trend. Aka after Guardian, he’s really hoping that this whole bromance-hinted-danmei thing is gonna be a hit, isn’t he? Lol does he realize that Guardian only got big because the actors went above and beyond to hold up the show? And then he chose Huang XiaoMing. Sorry. The dude can act decently well, if he’s working with a really good production crew — he’s capable of operating at the level of the production. Aka when you stick him with a crappy or inconsistent crew (yes you, Yumama)…he works with what you give him and no more, sometimes less. Good luck to Yumama trying to recreate Guardian’s success.
Lol sorry for the overwhelming amounts of negativity. I think the rest of the cast is really solid, but honestly, I don’t hold high hopes for YuZheng’s dramas (I still maintain that YanXi was a one-off because I tried HaoLan and it kinda sucked for the bit I stayed around for).
