    Finished first 2 eps.

Someone mentioned this had a Tribes and Empires feel. I agree. Pretty to look at. Not much voice dubbing. Some of the line deliveries sounded off.

The acting from the young members of the cast is iffy. The maid is ok. Don’t know whether the older members of the cast can sufficiently compensate for this. Feels like the protagonist and maid characterizations were changed from the novel to make them conventional, quickly likable, and easier to act for the actor and actress.

I’ll give it a few more eps to see if the drama can make me more interested.

Certain things I did not like how in the drama Ning Que seems less intelligent, cunning and cold hearted, for example loved in the novel, his ingenuity how he found and killed the first guy and made it seem like an accident. It was just awesome. Also I was looking for the epic fight when he acted as a paid guard for Chang Lixue, it was thanks to his cunningness and sharp observation, he found the breakthrough for the enchanter, which allowed for Chang Lixue to kill him. All this was cut in the drama and another fellow, a taoist stopped him.
I just wished that the writers should not have toned down how great Ning Que is in fights because of his sharp wit. Also I loved that in the novel he and Sang Sang were more shameless, so even when it got very serious, their priorities were very clear and it was hilarious of their way of thinking.
I agree that the production team used most of their money on live locations, but I felt the costumes tooo lacking and the minor characters played by actors couldnt act that well or did not look the part, may be they did not have any more budget to hire better actors .
I can judge better after I saw the series advanced more.

I’ve been reading up on the state of cdrama productions, especially concerning web dramas.

Investors or streaming platforms that put up the money now have a huge say in picking the main cast. Thus, connections, relationships and whom the powers that be want to feature/promote are more important than acting ability.

Directors are hired on. Non top-tier director has little say in production budget and cast selection. An anecdote – Agency tells a director that its actor/actress can only film on a certain schedule and must finish in this many days. If the director says that it cannot be done, director is fired. Another director who can accommodate agency’s demands will be hired.

Script quality is given the least amount of consideration.

Lol that is why I always get scared when a novel is adapted into a movie or drama. 90% of times it is completely messed up. Useless side arcs get introduced.
That being said, I actually like d actors chosen for Ning Que and Sang Sang. Though their acting is green, but I can picture Ning and Sang to look like this. At least visually they fit the characters.
I did not like the actors playing the princess and her brother’s roles. May be they will act better later.
That being said, I feel this is better adapted compared to Battle through the heaven where the story was changed completely.

I’ve watched the first episode. I like it. Will watch the rest in the weekend.

Not bad so far for the first 3 episodes. The acting is definitely green, though Chen Fei Yu is quite young and he & Song Yi Ren are cute enough that I don’t mind. Lots of world building and new characters introduced so I’m still trying to process who’s who. The real locations and gorgeous backdrops are great and hopefully the dialogue and editing doesn’t end up reminding me of Tribes and Empires. I’ll keep watching the next eps!

I was actually impressed by episode 1. I thought Chen Feiyu is doing very well as Ning Que (but I never had any expectations since I have not read the novels). The opening battle was quite good and cinematography for the first episode was beautiful.

What do you think?
