If I were to chose between Empresses in Palace vs. Ruyi, I would choose Empresses all the way. The overall feeling is just too different and I don’t understand why they changes so many things considering both books have the same author. Now back to Ruyi…..The cast was stellar, I thought everyone played their role well and I don’t agree with the criticism towards Wallace and Ruyi acting. The writing and plot is what should be criticized. I felt like they sped up some plots just to move the story line along, but you you had 87 episodes to get a point across. I kept reading that Ruyi was supposed to have committed suicide in the end but I guess they changed that…I felt like she should have died way earlier on in the story instead of dying in the last episode and then the story could progress from there. The ending felt rushed and not well put. Last statements….They made me really dislike Zhen Huan in this adaptation, consort Jia and Hailan was probably the best actress next to Ruyi…..
I am AMAZED that after 87 episodes the only person to receive any happiness at all was Ruyi maid…How does that happen?

People feel bad for ruyi but I didn’t feel anything, the lack of music and dark slow pace made it boring. It didn’t create any surrealness through that if that was the whole intention.

Personally, I thought Ruyi was better than Zhenhuan. In the end, Ruyi wasn’t a court battle drama but rather the depiction of love and a marriage over time, in an unique circumstance. To me, Ruyi was the most genuine romantic 悲剧 I have ever watched. This is a true 悲剧. Unlike Zhenhuan, Ruyi had felt oppressive, heavy, and terribly sad.

Zhou Xun was STELLAR in the role. I have always heard of her acting skills, and this show was the first time I’ve fully seen a piece of work from her. There were some scenes where she didn’t say anything but her facial, eyes, and body language gave everything away. In particularly, I remember the scene of her walking in the rain and realizing her first love had died; the scene where she was sobbing over Lin Yunche had become a eunuch; the scene where she bid farewell to the Emperor. The most powerfully acted scenes are those where an actor isn’t screaming or displaying histrionics, but instead conveying the emotion of the scene quietly and steadily. I would rate Zhou Xun’s acting ability higher than Sun Li’s.

Wallace Huo did not do bad in his role. In some parts, he could’ve done better, but overall I felt that he exceed expectations, especially towards the latter end of the drama. Perhaps Zhou Xun’s acting pulled or elevated his own acting.

87 episodes is long, but Ruyi was an exquisite piece of cinematic production. Quality was high everywhere. It’s rare we get to see such a high-caliber production coming out of China, where the entertainment industry is dominated by fluffy idol dramas. This production deserves to go down as a classic.

Regarding continuity between Ruyi and Zhenhuan, I think the Zhenhuan in this drama is different from the Zhenhuan from before. It’s two different characters. In the previous drama, Zhenhuan was deathly afraid of cats, but in this drama, she was depicted as having a (ugly) cat as a pet.

Will expect more juicy drama before Ruyi actual death especially finding all those evidences of 令妃 evil doing. The ending was too fast to close the serial.

The show has excited me to visit Beijing to see the real Forbidden City of the Old Chinese Palace.

I am yet to finish all episodes but one of my biggest gripes so far is Ruyi’s headdresses, I think she had one nice one so far, and it especially went downhill after she became empress…especially compared to other concubines.
The cast and acting is amazing and the glimpse into coping with life in the forbidden palace as humans is well portrayed. I think all the actors who had real voices used are great and all the dubbed voices feel off.. it would have been good to just use real voices for everyone because you can tell for the dubbed ones that they are dubbed. Maybe they had to dub because of bad pronunciation or strong accents? seems to be a trend in Chinese dramas in general…
Ruyi palace is a tragedy and event so many episodes off from the end i can feel it slowly plummeting towards the doomed ending for many characters :'(

It’s the opposite for me, I actually loved Ruyi headdresses because it suited her round face…I didn’t like those huge rectangles ones…they just always looked weird to me. Ruyi’s always looked like she was wearing a crown or her head was adorned by flowers

don’t want to compare with zhen huan but in ruyi there are lots more handsome actors. sorry for my shallow review~
and for the story line, basically i like zhen huan because she killed the crazy emperor. lol. so satisfying.
while in ruyi, it emphasizes more on romance between ruyi and emperor that gradually diminishing–too sad. who’s the winner at the end? none.
so if to recommend to people, i would recommend ruyi for my “more” sentimental friends…ep 87, from the beginning til ending, seemed i cried for 45+ minutes.

I really enjoyed the show. Riyu’s maids, Suoxin and Rongpei were great. Poor Suoxin’s leg though. Janine Chang was the best BFF ever as Noble Consort Yu. The emperor was a jackass. Nobody ever bothered to keep the evil folks in check. First time seeing Zhou Xun, she was wonderful.

Never got round to watching the drama properly because it’s emotionally draining like Legend of Zhen Huan but without the triumphant moments of the main lead getting revenge against the villains (more bitter than the bittersweetness of ZH). From some of the eps here and there I did watch though, the acting was great and I might revisit it again one day if I’m in the mood for some tragedy. Such as in ep 77, the scenes with Ru Yi and Ling Yunche, and him with the young 12th prince. Oh so heartbreaking T_T

Also loved the friendship between Ruyi and Hailan. The latter’s loyalty and love was awesome!
