OST Songs.

Our leads sing for the OST.

Synopsis Written after I read the First 5 chapters: Heavy Sweetness Ash-like Frost (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) is the drama adaptation of the same-name novel written by Dian Xian. It follows our naive heroine (but with funny antics, I read, played by Yang Zi), daughter of the Flower Goddess and Water Deity, who’s fed an unfeeling pill while two sons of the Heavenly King fall head-over-heels in love with her. Her mother, the Flower Goddess, doesn’t want her daughter to be like her – afflicted and tormented by love, hence she feeds her little daughter the unfeeling pill before she dies. Family history of both sides doesn’t help; with the Heavenly Empress full of jealousy and considers the Flower Goddess her love rival. Our male lead (Deng Lun) is the second son of the Heavenly King, known as the most beautiful of the six realms. His brother (Leo Luo), described as calming, actually has an underbelly of schemes and uses the heroine to his advantage, successfully making her believe the hero killed her dad. With vengeance in mind, she drives the knife into the hero’s heart, killing him on the spot. As she watches him fade away, he asks whether she has ever loved him, and she gives him a heartbreaking no. He vanishes into thin air and it’s that moment when she throws up the unfeeling pill, all bottled-up emotions flow through, opening her heart and eyes to the feelings of love. Thus begins her journey to revive him but he’s become the high and mighty Demon Lord. Dun Dun Dun!! [Kappy@AVV]

I live for Yang Zi and Deng Lun’s interactions lmao. First few episodes were funny and light. Their casting received alot of criticism but I think both actors carry their roles well.
Also, I’m attracted to Chen Yuqi, the girl playing the demon princess. She’s really pretty.

Love it! Sticking close to the novel so far, and whatever they add is to the benefit of the story (like the Shuanghua interaction in ep9 that shows Jinmi isn’t as unfeeling). The OTP is adorbs and I like most everyone else (except for the birdies aunt niece pair).

LOVE the OTP hehe. It follows the book pretty well! Except the novel isn’t very long and it doesn’t dwell into their mortal life too much (at least not from the translated novel), but the drama does. I’m curious how they will play that out. 🙂

In the novel, the mortal life comes in the last few chapters after the fight between Xu Feng and Night. So I am guessing the mortal part in drama would be where Yang Zi covers her face in the trailers that have been released. Supposedly, two big showdowns in the novel are when Jin Mi spits out the unfeeling pill and the fight between Xu Feng and Night.

Loving this drama a lot. The first few episodes have already become addictive to me. If it keeps it up, it may be one of this summer’s top hit.

I like it so far! I think the two actors have pretty good chemistry.

I dropped Fu Yao for a very long time now, the first few episodes was very Fu Yao (not storyline wise but the pace and characters).

I like the two actors, they are very good in their respective role and yang zi was very funny. You make her smile when she is acting. Pretty young girl. Hoping for English sub for this drama series.

I read the story online like 2x and love it so much but I made sure my expectations for the drama was low bc I didn’t want to be disappointed. Which I’m glad I did bc even without the eng subs, I know almost all the scenes from the translated novel and it makes me smile to see it in the drama. Love the cast for bringing this drama to life.

Quite surprised that Yang Zi really fits the character Jin Mi. She’s naive but in an endearing way and pretty hilarious. I can’t think of any other actresses in her age group that would be able to match her portrayal (esp with the acting chops needed to take on the heavier scenes as the drama progresses).

The two leads do have good chemistry and there have been some memorable interactions between them. 60 eps for a xianxia drama is way too long for me to watch without skipping through, but I am looking forward to the character development and emotional scenes.

JinMi’s inner monologue is hilarious thanks to the unfeeling pill. But seriously how is she so dense? XD

Addicted to this one and was wondering when you will start a post on this drama instead of updates on Fu Yao. So far it’s sticking closely to the novel with some extras included (that added more value to the story). Jin Mi is so frustratingly naive and I laughed myself silly at her inner dialogue versus the inner dialogues of others around her! All she ever wanted is more cultivation and of course, she thinks highly of herself! In a way, she was very childlike and because of this, it created many misunderstandings!

TBH, I dropped Fu Yao at ep 4. Knew it’s not going to be as good as expected. Ppl are just giving it a go because of Yang Mi. Another drama I dropped like a hot potato at Ep. 2 is Yang Yang’s “Martial Universe”. That’s another drama ppl are giving a go at because of a big name but turned out disappointing. Yang Yang’s character in that drama is entirely different to his usual cool, expressionless lead characters; so he got to express more facial and body expressions. You’ll get to see a different sort of Yang Yang in Martial Universe. That’s a plus. Unfortunately, the director and script writer are at fault here and the drama is not up to standard (in my opinion). I think they were trying to fit some creative film-style plus at-your-face type quirky humour which unfortunately did not work in the drama. A pity for my handsome Yang Yang! And unfortunately, I am not the sort to persevere through a drama simply because of a handsome actor! Guess I’ll just have to wait for his next work and hope that it’s a good one so I can see more of his yumminess!

At this stage, my recommendation is Heavy sweetness ash-like frost over all the other dramas currently showing. Happy Drama Watching, peeps!

I was initially wary whencasting was announced. Yang zi didnt fit the image i had in mind when i read, completely and enjoyed the novel. I didnt imagine Deng Lun for the role of phoenix either. And was also worried how it would be awarded. Watching up to episode 10, im quite happy with the flow and many events that are followed closely to novel version. also i really appreciate te simple hair stylings for both female and male. Regal or pretty without being distracting (i saw a fair share of atrocious ones). I also enjoyed listening to their real voices, i cant be sire of everyone but i can recognise Deng lun, Leo luo and Yang zi’s voice.
    -spoilerish-
The first 1/3 is pretty happy, funny and adventurous so i think thats why its an asy watch currently.I thk i wont watch the middle parts at the same pace- those scenes you see in opening theme-when betrayals and misunderstanding, angst and whole lot of bad guys gaining upper hand comes in.

Ahhh! I completely agree with you. When I read the novel and noted the chosen cast, my first thought was that they didn’t match. I didn’t consider Deng Lun the most “handsome” man and Yang Zi isn’t pretty enough either to fit the most “beautiful” woman description. However, both of these leads’ charm won me over in spite of it.

Now I’m fangirling over Deng Lun lol and rewatching some of his older works. I can’t say I’m very impressed by Yang Zi because I feel like she’s been typecasting these similar airheaded roles for a while now. She’s still as lovable as ever, but I hope to see some acting maturation when the tone of the drama switches to something darker and more angsty.

Over all though, I’m very happy with the drama so far and I can already feel my heart hurt bitterly for poor Deng Lun for the latter half of the drama. Still, I anticipate his descent into darkness!

So I haven’t read the book and only learned of the synopsis like five minutes before watching the drama, but I have to say I enjoyed the first couple of episodes.

  16. 24 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Zi and Deng Lun’s Heavy Sweetness Ash-like Frost?

hard to take deng lun seriously, he looks like a boy more than a man
and when he’s shooting with the arrow lol, it’s like this boy never did sports in his entire life
he just screams “weakling!!” to me

Just finished ep 25. Here are my thoughts WITH SPOILERS:

    – Yang Zi is super adorable as Jin Mi. I had wanted her to return to pre-Ode of Joy days to playing characters like Hu Xiangxiang from BoC and Xia Ran from Perfect Wedding, but she won me over here in Ashes yet again.
    – It’s actually my first time watching Deng Lun as I somehow managed to avoid everything he was previously in. I have to admit that my shallow self did not find him attractive at first, but he grew on me as the series progressed. I do find myself liking his voice and am glad that he dubbed his own character.
    – Leo Luo Yun Xi has improved from the last time I saw him in Fox in the Screen(?). At least his loving gazes look a lot more natural in this one, haha. Just never thought his real voice is soooo soft.
    – Yukee Chen’s character Liu Ying…is she relevant? I’m not seeing how she fits in the grand scheme of things just yet.
    – Kathy Chow’s expressions are way over the top for me. I can’t help but laugh when they zoom into her face and she tries to look livid.
    – I like the mortal versions of Jin Mi and Xu Feng – they just seem so much happier. Jin Mi still torments XF’s feelings but at least she’s aware of his intentions, whereas heavenly Jin Mi is fully controlled by the darn pill.
    – Speaking of that pill, I can’t wait to see it finally burst. Bring on the angst!

I simply love this film. Jin Mi & Xu Feng are adorable & perfect for each other.

I just finished watching this drama. First time watching Deng Lun and found him incredibly handsome and sexy. I thought he and the female lead had good chemistry. I was team Phoenix from the get go. I loved Demon princess and Mu Ci..I cried buckets when he died. They should have found a way to save him they were great together. Actor Zhou Ting Wei is also a very handsome man. Lots of eye candy. Actor who played Deng Lun’s brother is handsome too, he has the softest voice.. Lots of darkness to go through but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Lots of action (fight scenes) that I thought were good. I recommend this drama . All the cast did an excellent job.

LOL I’m almost done with this one too. I got to say Deng Lun and Yang Zi’s face are a very good matching pair. She looks like a little girl and he looks like a young boy.
In Legend of White Snake, the guy looks young too, but way too young (reminds me of Ali) and doesn’t match her. It seems she have the same character again in that other drama. But AOL def. has the better storyline and directing. The show has lots of flaws but worth a watch, the chemistry of the two leads are pretty catchy.
