Trailer and OST MV:

Synopsis Translated by Tranzgeek: The Everlasting Imperial City that leads all of China, Tiansha, Xuanji, and the sects of learning, the holy land, as the sky separates Fufeng and the ocean, as they face one another. In the distant past, the firmament once gave birth to a god – a lotus, that formed into Meng Fuyao (Yang Mi). In childhood, Fuyao was cast into the depths of Yuanjian Sect. Because of her aptitude for being stupid, she was subject to the disdain of her teachers. When she was 16, she “broke into the 9th heaven”, a remarkable feat that henceforth made her dedicate herself to martial arts progress. To gather the secret orders of the world, she quietly waits for the Fufeng Sea to merge with the ocean. On that day, she sets out for the vault of heaven. Fuyao steps into the world, and her experiences pave a pathway. She and the crown prince, Changsun Wuji (Ethan Ruan) of the Everlasting Imperial City gets acquainted and falls in love. The two people cooperate to settle disputes and usurp power of the Taiyuan Regent. The army in the south of the Wuji Nation violates the boundary, and that is when the Virtuous Imperial Palace changes as Prince Lie of Tiansha fights the north and allies with others to regain his royal power as the heavens terminate. It is then made known that Fuyao’s is Xuanji King’s daughter. Everyone accompanies Fuyao in leaving for the firmament, as she uses her flesh and human body to contend against the evil things of the distant past, to save the heavens. After experiencing many hardships and perils and trials, in the end they defeat the conspiracy revolving around the heavens and get rid of all malicious and demonic roads, protecting the peace of the world. Fuyao and Wuji’s love also succeed in bearing good fruit. [DO NOT TAKE OUT WITHOUT AVV PERMISSION.]

Note: Changsun Wuji belongs to the Wuji Nation. The Wuji Nation’s capital is the Everlasting Imperial City. Tiansha, Fufeng, and Xuanji are all places.

Directed by Yang Wen Jun (So Young, You Are My Sunshine Movie), Xie Ze (Great Expectatons), and Li Cai, and written by novel author and Jie Yan Yan (Hua Xu Yin), Legend of Fu Yao premieres on June 18th with 66 episodes.

You are so fast! Staying late today to watch it, well only 2-4 episodes so far so can’t really judge, but to be honest meh…nothing really happen within the first 4 episodes. I was anticipating it so much but to my dismay, so far the plot is only AGAIN ABOUT A VERY JEALOUS GIRL OF CINDERELLA THE MARY SUE just got to yell that out. I couldn’t believe Li Yixiao (Dugu Mantuo) is in the show, did not know see that coming and when I saw her I was OMG. I guess playing the jealousy girl part will really put people in so much hate that she’s probably the only person alive now willing to do those roles. I really hope the next episodes will get better! The pacing is still a bit slow, could’ve been better.

In the very least, Fu Yao and Wu Ji’s interactions are not completely bland, I wouldn’t say it’s even “good” but at least it’s not bland, there is a little bit taste to it but still not quite strong. All other interactions fall out very flat, I don’t feel anything between Fu Yao and her friends, the senior brother, or when she’s with the old guy that raised her and etc.

But the novel is much more mary sue… In fact if you read character relationship I think they already cut less love line for her…
The Mary sue part is what people like to complain even if there are 2 guys like her and one is the lead… You haven’t watched more to see if others people like her

I don’t know if I’m the only one, but though the beginning was a bit slow, and i skipped (and continue to skip) around a little, IT’S STILL SO MUCH BETTER THAN SO MANY OTHER DRAMAS! Like at least the chemistry is there and the script/production team seems to add in a lot of humor and little improvisations that make the drama seem more heartfelt and thought out. Ethan and Yang Mi’s interactions are actually good and don’t seem awkward like so many of the other leads out there in dramaland. I’m actually giddy half the time they banter and interact heehee. and also of course costuming is GORGEOUS

First few episodes are really nothing much – you get a typical clumsy bumbling female lead who creates trouble but is loved by many; and saved by the male lead multiple times. Oh, and of course hated by the evil second female lead. I think this isn’t really the fault of the drama because the novel itself is very Mary Sue.
Still, its an addictive drama (for me) because historical fantasy is my fave genre, and I like the interaction between Wuji and Fuyao (damn, Wuji is being outright touchy/flirty as soon as they met). Things do get alot more eventful from the later half of episode 5. I’m looking forward to see badass Fuyao taking revenge in the next few episodes, and her getting out of Xuanyuan sect to explore the world.

And oh, its Li Yixiao again. Props to her for taking on these evil female roles, even though her face is uncomfortable to look at most of the time.

I’m going to repeat myself here
But the novel is much more mary sue… In fact if you read character relationship chart I think they already cut less love line for her…They probably need to adjust in order to pass SARFT. But if they don’t follow the novel, there are a bunch of people complaining
The Mary sue part is what people like to complain even if there are 2 guys like her and one is the lead… You haven’t watched more to see if others people like her yet, right?
In in the beginning of any drama, aren’t most leading roles more naive clumsy etc… then they can grow up to be more mature and good? If they went the opposite way, I’m sure people are getting even more mad?
But of course peole always find things to complain or nitpick on even it’s the usual how things go…

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Did I say the drama is mary sue? I said the novel is.
Stop being over defensive and rant somewhere else. I aren’t even complaining; it seems like you are the only one that is complaining because you can’t seem to accept differing opinions.

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Sorry for misunderstanding because 2 first comments was repeating “mary sue” when the drama barely started and as you said the novel it self was pretty Marry Sue. What can drama production do about that?

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Something about jealous female’s face was bothering me the entire time I watched episode 1,2 and 3. Her face or her expressions look contemporary to me. I have not seen her before, but she seems familiar.

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

You probably seen her in legend of Dugu if you watched that drama. She’s the second sister.

  3. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Watched 6 episodes last night, so far I don’t love it yet but it might work for me. Because I didn’t like the beginning of the novel anyway. I like it from book 2 after she leaves… So we need to get out of that phrase.
Fighting scenes are very good. Acting and clothing is good too. YM took a bit longer but she is getting into the character. Ethan sells it right away. And I love their chemistry already.
CG is not too bad either.
Overall, I hope it’s a slow burn like TMOPB but it’s hard to beat it so we can’t have our expectation too high

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

I realize it’s very (early) days yet, but if you’re familiar with the novel, can you please tell me if the drama seems like a faithful adaptation? I’d really like that, because as over-the-top as the novel purportedly is, it still sounds like great fun, and it should be infinitely better than anything else the scriptwriters could scrounge up if they start straying from the original storyline–that way usually lie huge disappointments (see “Untouchable Lovers,” “Princess Wei Yang” etc etc)

P.S. In reply to your comment below, as far as I know a Mary Sue isn’t an ordinary girl at all, but per definition “an idealized and seemingly perfect” character. She might have an ordinary background (like Bella in “Twilight” lol), but she turns out to be a special snowflake just the same, which is what makes her a Mary Sue.
Personally, I don’t mind the “perfection” which defines a Mary Sue–that she’s perfectly beautiful, and smart and talented, and all the men like her, and any minor flaws *like being clumsy cough* are pure window dressing, because heck, it’s fiction, and over-the-top, unreal characters engaging in over-the-top, unreal adventures (and romance) can be lots of fun, especially in the fantasy genre. So it’s not the “perfection” that I mind–I just wish for the character to have a bit of a “real” personality too, and a bit more depth than a shallow puddle (or your average Mary Sue). And I’m gleefully anticipating which way Fuyao will swing.

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

I didn’t know about the word “Mary Sue” until it was explained in the Moonshine and Valentine drama so thank for clarifying.

Honestly I didn’t expect the drama to be very faithful to the novel. There are many reasons for it… They will definitely wouldn’t be able to make it to the drama if they are. First of all time traveling is ban so Fuyao’s origin is changed completely. It also affects how her love line with Wuji too. In the novel, where is she from and how she always want to go back is the biggest reason she kepts rejecting him. 2nd, the novel is much longer and more complicated but they have to fit everything in only 66 episodes. Thirdly, this is the challenging time for Historical dramas. That’s why you haven’t seem many this year even some big ones were scheduled to release since last year. There are many restrictions that they need to avoid or edit in the drama. Women centered dramas are even more difficult situations so they might have tone down and edit out a lot in order to broadcast. Like I said Fuyao is lucky to be released before Win the World and Ruyi…

But for the first 6 episodes I watched, they have changed lot but I can also see they try their best keep the essence of the characters and story. Like how Fuyao and Wuji met totally different but their dynamics is still the same… I think the drama starting to get more fun after ep 5 and will have even more actions tonight ( ep 7 and 8). Personally started to enjoy the book more after she left to travel the worlds. That’s when Fuyao is growing stronger too as well as her relationship with Wuji start develop along with other relationship… So I can’t wait until it’s happening in the drama.

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Thank you for the detailed reply. I’m not surprised yet still disappointed that the drama isn’t a faithful adaptation of the novel; I’d count myself (and like-minded viewers) lucky if they at least stick to the spirit of the novel and character relationships/interactions, like you seem to think so far, but I wouldn’t bet on it. C-dramas seem to have the same overused tropes (OTP miscommunication, misunderstandings, and general character stupidity to create conflict of the kind that makes viewers want to pull out their hair–or bit**slap the main leads) as failback solutions to drag out the story some more (Yumama productions even function on the basis of these tropes most of the time, and don’t just use them as failbacks, right?), and honestly, 66 episodes are plenty for the plot to go awry. Sigh. I’m still cautiously optimistic (and would be so happy for all my dire predictions to be proven wrong!) but there’s got to be a reason why the novel fans and the author basically disavowed this novel-to-drama adaptation while completely supporting the other (“The Rise of Phoenixes”). But we’ll see soon enough. 🙂
And yes, all these SARFT-or-whatever-they’re-called-now regulations are such a bummer, especially when they interfere with the proper portrayal of some of my favorite tropes on screen. I love time travel, and the rebirth genre can be so much fun as well, when done well. There are so many great C-novels built around these tropes, and even when they’re brought to screen, they’re often ruined during production because of all the stumbling blocks in the way of a faithful adaptation. Not to mention, the prohibited themes are so random and nonsensical! I mean, they allow god characters with entanglements over multiple lifetimes, and fox spirits, and the ML shapeshifting into a dragon (or a little cute snake) etc. etc. but they draw the line at a little bit of time-travel? And not even to a historical era, but a fictional one? Makes absolutely no sense.

  4. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Is there another definition for Mary Sue that I don’t know about? I’ve only watched the first two episodes but correct me if i’m wrong but it was explained that the mountain had a pugilist sect and she would sneak off to practice and hone her fighting skills and has Senior Yan to train her who is suppose to be one of frontrunners for that Warrior Hunt competition. I don’t think it’s farfetched that she could train to be a good fighter with all these resources around her. Likewise, she’s resourceful and has built those different contraptions. I do agree that it’s a shame that the other female character’s motivation is driven by the fact that she is jealous of Fu Yao’s relationship with Senior Yan. But I guess her Uncle is using her for his means too. I don’t mind her playfulness in the beginning, judging from the trailers she’s about to go through a dramatic transformation. I’ll enjoy the light and happy-go-lucky times for now. Yang Mi can do those adorable parts in her sleep at this point.

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Basically Mary Sue is a ordinary girl that is loved by many men…
Fuyao is far from ordinary… even she isn’t at her best right now.
And there is a childhood / first love she loves right now and a male lead who is interested in her… He hasn’t even loved her yet…
But yes, that’s too much for people that they have to complain about it. If you read the novel, all the men love Fuyao LOL. But so far at least in the first episodes( I watched up to 6 last night) we haven’t seen more than 2 yet… But people complained ahead anyway,
Personally I believe they cut some love line for her looking at the character chart. One of the reason is the government restriction was harder on historical/women central who can do anything and has all the love lines… Fuyao got to aired before Ruyi, Win the world so I’m sure it has less woman central , all the love line or at least they edit it to be able to pass the Censor board

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

If you think a Mary Sue is an “ordinary girl that is loved by many men” then I suggest you look up the definition and traits of a Mary Sue again.

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Thanks for the clarification. Oh yeah, I forgot that all the characters liking the main lead romantically was part of the definition of Mary Sue But like you said, it’s only been two characters so far. And this is Yang Mi we’re talking about, it’s easily understandable if everyone were to fall in love with her!

I haven’t read the novel nor know anything about it but there’s already some interesting elements at play. I’m assuming she’s been confined to living on that mountain and when she eventually leaves it, her social status as a servant and how she’ll ascend the social ladder i’m assuming, how she develops into a great fighter and so on. I look forward to seeing how these things play out.

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

I think “being loved by many man” is the definition of Candy.

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

From what I read of the novel, I don’t think Fuyao is neither a Candy nor a May Sue because she isn’t described as very beautiful and she wasn’t good in martial arts in the beginning.
I think the author made Fuyao loved by every man to make her an even amazing heroine. However, I prefer it when a herone is liked by a lot of women because when it’s the former, it’s pretty misogynistic, like she has qualities that only please men.

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Yeah, from what i’ve seen the term Mary Sue has changed so much and has been used as a catch all phrase. But like I said, Fu Yao seems to be playful and mischievous to a fault which got her into trouble. She’s fallen into traps as well. So she doesn’t seem too “perfect” but they’ve set the foundation there for her to grow and change as the story progresses.

Yeah, I agree, so far Fu Yao has that Seven guy, Senior Yan and her Uncle (+pig) as her friends. Hopefully she meets some female characters along the way and that they’ll like and support each other.

Thanks for providing that additional bit of info!

  5. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

I’m…honestly not that into it? Was kinda anticipating but…I’m not feeling the pull. Somehow I think I was expecting it to be less typical idol-fantasy-wuxia. Like, I understand the source material isn’t giving them much to work off of for characterization, but based on how hard-core and cool the trailers/teasers looked, I think I just expected higher quality in script/characterization….everything. The CGI isn’t distractingly bad but also not that great…actually it’s pretty bad but I guess it’s not the breaking point for me. It’s more that, I can mostly overlook the cliche, the Mary-Sue, the bland characters, the CGI, the script if it had more addictive pull or something. Idk, I can’t really name why, but I’m just not feeling this drama overall.

Interestingly enough, I dislike Jiro and while I love Gina, I thought Concubine Meng would be bad, but despite all its flaws, I love it and find it pretty addicting.

For Fu Yao, I’m gonna keep skimming mostly because I think Zhang Ya Qin is adorable so I really wanna see her character Ya Lan Zhu (the princess who’s in love with Vincent Gao’s character). Maybe I’ll stick around to watch her cuts? Ethan Ruan is hotter than I expected tho… Despite me having only ever seen him in Fated to Love You, he looks really good in ancient costume.

  6. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Someone is ethan the real prince or the imposter? Is the real crown prince the guy who yang mi helped but got kidnapped?

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

He is Wuji the Crown Prince of another Country who is in charge with the task of keeping the peace in all the countries? something like that. He is impersonating the real Yuanxuan Prince.

  7. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

selfishly i did not want this drama to do well because I really dislike looking at Ethan’s face. He has such a sleazy look that it kind of ruins dramas for me and I don’t want him to be as ubiquitous as Feng Shaofeng, who also has a very off-putting face for me. After FSF acted with Yang Mi he was everywhere. Not saying that he is sleazy, just that his face is sleazy and off-putting for me. He’s no gentle looking Mark. My opinion of his acting is also just meh.

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

wow u da same as me. I also don’t see FSF, Huang XiaoMing’s face (can’t watch NIF2, nor any FSF’s drama, etc = ice fantasy: plot is crap.)
With FSF is diff from HXM; it’s just that I don’t get why ppl find him good looking and it’s ubiquitous. He played Lan ling wang who is 1 of the most handsome face in C-history like I don’t get why.
With HXM I “get” his features and why he’s popular but his smile is creepy.
Ethan’s smile in this drama is like HXM which led me to think that he did some sort of ps on his face: that sort of like creepy indentation of the corner of their smile.

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Totes agree about FSF & HXM. They got that smug & sleazy look down pat. It’s unfortunate they’re leads and main actors when their faces turn me off so much.

I think Ethan has potential to be just like them, but thankfully to a much lesser degree, so I can accept & tolerate him

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

          My ranking for icky faces:

          1) FSF – tops them all
          2) Ethan – cant tolerate him
          3) HXM – he looks so weird in funny roles but he looks good when required to be serious, dead serious. He was actually very good and tolerable, ironically when in The Message and he played a complete evil sociopath

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

          I dislike these names too!

I used to be OK with HXM until his dramas with Joe Chen, Vic Song. There were some of his dramas that I could watch though I preferred watching several of his co-stars in The Bund. But these days, it’s hard to want to watch him.

Many of these names use the “chok” acting too much. It comes across smug and self-important. FSF often lays that on very thick. That’s the biggest problem with HXM’s overbearing CEO roles too. They need a strong director to reign them in so they don’t go overboard. Maybe they need together with Li Yifeng and other actors who are under-emoting, so they can average out to a normal level via osmosis? lol. Interestingly, some actors get better with experience while some can get worse over the years. Some can look like they are too in love with themselves.

Wang Yan Lin’s acting bothers me. Too much of the same acting is used repeatedly in multiple dramas. Princess Agent, Wuxin, Across the Ocean. He’s OK in some dramas. I saw Ethan Ruan last as Hu Bayi last year with Xu Lu. It was ok. That drama’s production value was OK to watch.

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

The sleazy face haha, so many C-netizens were saying the same thing when the casting was announced. The character in the book was so royal and regal with an air of warmth, he was a very lovely character. So when Ethan was casted to play him so many novel fans were in an uproar.

I’m along the same thoughts as you, just waiting to see how Ethans acting will surprise me. We’re still in early stages but good to know I’m not the only one thinking of these things.

      • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

speaking of sleazy faces, Wang Yan Lin got it all lock down. He has that face, that smile, but he’s incredibly likeable. He’s destined to play villains, sometimes, but I hope he can get a lead role.

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Wang Yan Lin was so good in Wuxin as the comedic bully-turned-silly-warlord.

        • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

WYL is different, I could look at his face for days even though he always portrays sleazy characters

  8. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Ethan nails the role. I like how he portrays so far. Yangmi is okay. They changed a bit in the drama compared to the novels which it is understandable as the Govt restrictions are crazy on those wuxia dramas. Not much things happened in first 6 episodes. I felt that it is a bit slow in terms of the story progress,l. Hope that it will pick up after she leaves the sect. The costumes look great!

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

agree with you. Ethan is entertaining to watch and I think he has a playful look whic hsuits the story so far.

  9. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

I don’t think it is slow paced at all. I’ve seen much more ‘slow’. I’m on episode 3 and things are moving along for me but then I don’t know anything about the novel so just going purely by the drama. Thus, far: I am enjoying it. It’s not to the level of 3L3WTPB yet but hey, it’s only a few episodes in. I do agree that Ethan is nailing his role, very mischievous. Fuyao as a character isn’t clear to me yet and I think Yang Mi’s portrayal is OK but it’s hard to shake off the Qian Qian character etc. I do enjoy the interaction between the leads best thus far.

  10. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

The CGI and the voice dubbing put me off however it’s Yang Mi hence I was able to get through all the episodes. I’m liking Ethan in his portrayal of the fake Prince and the curious, mischievous,, serious and protective Wuji.
I’m not sure why are there so many debates on “Mary Sue” but it is not impossible for many men to fall for Fu Yao. Not for the beauty but for the bravery, the righteousness and the heart.
It’s a fantasy, period drama. Take a chill pill and enjoy.
I’m looking forward to watching it even if have to endure the horrible CGI and voice dubbing. Lol

  11. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

I’ve always liked Ethan Ruan since his Fated to Love You days so I might be biased but I like him here as well (and I hear you about HXM and FSF!). For me Ethan skews cheeky and harmless rather than smarmy. The pace is actually better than 3L3W in the beginning stage. Remember how we spent like 10 episodes on Kunlun and didn’t get to see YH? At least WJ is around in these early episodes and there’s world building intrigue. I haven’t read the novel so I don’t know where they’re going with this but hopefully it continues to be fun.

  12. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

i’m thinking if i have a misconception about mary sue after reading the definition above? i thought mary sue was a character who is seemingly perfect (written to fulfil fantasy/wish of the writer or audiences), characterised by having many buffs (either very smart, or genius at something, or have special characteristics, or very beautiful, or has very good character etc etc), with many friends or admirers who will help her along the way.. hmmm yup that’s my understanding of mary sue, having more than one guy liking her is just one of the result of being a mary sue and not the definition of a mary sue??

watched some clips of the drama and not really interested, and i think ethan ruan looks too weird in historical drama

    • 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Finally, the right definition. Awesome summary of most idol drama nowadays btw lol

  13. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

Love! The wardore, CP chemistry, and YANG MI!!!!! Idk about the plot later on but I love. Actors can act, cg is acceptable (compared to other wuxia fantasy dramas), but the first couple episodes are good.

  14. 49 thoughts on “First Impression: What do you think of Yang Mi and Ethan Ruan’s Legend of Fu Yao?

I picked up this drama yesterday, and have watched 2 1/2 episodes. After I read a comment that there are many books, I dread that the ending will fall flat like Princess Agents or Tribes and Empires. Will the 66 episodes be comprehensive, with a conclusion or a TBD?

I am watching Yang Mi as Bai Qian playing Fu Yao. Her Fu Yao character seems to have more skill sets. The SLS couple do not impress me. I will stick with the drama, but flashback filler, song overload and dragging episodes might kill the enthusiasm.

I’m surprising really into this though trying to watch this and Guardian at the same time is going to be interesting. I don’t think I’ll be sleeping much. 🙂

I still don’t care much what the exact meaning of Mary Sue is but there are many Mary Sue characters that are likeable. I don’t know why this time though YM acting seems to bother me quite a bit. I think her character really isn’t all that Mary Sue but the acting, it gives me that vibe so much! Like, I never see her angry yet so far, when she came to fight li yi xiao in episode 7 or 8, she just turned around with a super duper innocent harmless look. Didn’t look she was angry and revengful but just coming there to fight a bad guy bc it’s what a hero do. She over did the “innocent” acting a lot of times so far, for my taste. It just made me feel she is Mary Sue although she might not be. I think it’s for the purpose of making the changes of personality distinctive later on…

She is gutsy and skillful, don’t understand how she’s not a good fighter before learning the water skill thing bc she did fight decently for a few minutes before losing to anyone.

I still don’t like the pace after the latest episode, 30 minutes crying at a graveyard, 20 minutes fighting, 30 other minutes for miscellaneous stuff such as for talking only… those add up soon 1 episode was over but really only 1-2 things happened. I wished they manage the timing better, 66 episodes will be very long if that pace is going to be consistent.

After watching 8 eps I must say I’m hungry for more…. I REALLY LIKE it and I am very excited to see what happens in the future. Our leading lady is killing it kicked ex bf ass in ep 7 than in ep 8 kicked his fiance ass. I am so ready for kick ass Yang Mi and Heart Throb Ethan .

Have watched all episodes translated so far Episode 10 and am loving it. There are some pacing issues but the interactions with the main leads and their friends are great! I thought Yangmi’s voice dubber would annoy me as it almost has the whiny sound to it.. but i figured it would mature with her. Which has already happened. Ethan has been GREAT! I get what the other commentors above have stated with the smarmy looks etc. but his are great. Vengo I just can’t take seriously with black hair. and his faces are going the way of HXM. I have to say all these men are very handsome. I just wish the translations for the book were farther along bc I want to know what happens– I hate being slapped in the face with CRAZY plots. I get it– most Cdramas have wacky plots.. but still I like knowing what i’m walking into.. but as of now.. love what I’m seeing.

This would sound awfully unreasonable but YM’s voice dubber was Mary Sue’s voice!
Like I know how Mary Sue sounds like harhar, but did this same voice dubb every other actresses too? Especially the ones with the exact same personality as Fu Yao?? I think that’s why it started making me feel it’s the official tone and style for Mary Sue’s voice.

        1. Baidu says YM’s Fuyao is dubbed by 王潇倩.

        2. A lot of Mary Sues are dubbed by 季冠霖. This dubber, Ms Ji, has lots of fans and has dubbed AB (General and I), Gan Tingting, LSS (the fantasy period drama with William Chan. The one with the infamous Tinky Winky hair and dance. 😛 ), Sun Li (Mi Yue), Joe Chen (Stay With Me, Destined to Love You with Bosco Wong, etc), Yang Mi (3l3w, Negotiator etc ), Ruby Lin (Singing All Along), Yang Zi (Chusen), Tang Yan (Princess Weiyoung, Breadfruit Tree etc).

Despite her many fans, I cringed at both Joe Chen’s acting and Ms Ji’s voice dubbing in Stay With Me and a couple of other dramas.

Fuyao’s dubber info is available under Yang Mi’s name and Fuyao’s character description at
