=======> ♦ What new hobby did Kappy pick up? I’m learning the piano! I have always been fascinated by the piano and on an impulse that took place at least ten years ago, I bought a digital piano using my New Year money! But I was easily impressionable back then and got easily hurt when a classmate said I don’t have pretty hands to play the piano. Lol. So my piano sat in the corner of my room for the years to come… I know. Why was my young mind so sensitive back then? Anyhoo, I’m learning now!….with my baby brother who is 13 years old. XD The hardest thing so far is my brain refusing to separate the hands playing different notes. This is a frustrating challenge but I’m not gonna give up! If you have tutorials for me, let me know in the comments!

I thought to share this now because a lot of people say you can’t teach an old person new tricks (words are prettily edited, lol). And I want to say that’s not true! You need to have the right motivation to learn anything at any age! Anyone picking up a new hobby?

Piano songs that I would like to learn….

Yiruma: River Flows In You.

From Naruto’s OST: Sadness and Sorrow. I could watch the below’s cover for days… The visual and the playing… Oooff.

Sad theme from Fairy Tale.

You Can’t Say from my first Korean drama OST: All About Eve.

My Love Will Go On.

Mariage d’Amour.

=======> ♦ Last Saturday, I crossed one item off my bucket’s list! Attended a Jacky Cheung’s concert when he landed at Mohegan Sun! I was blown away by how good he sounded live, exactly like the CDs and DVDS that I own in my collection. After his medley of fast songs, he entered the slow love songs serenade and I cried….. My friends laughed so hard because I’m usually not an emotional person. He started with Man Man (“Slowly”) and I ugly cried for ten minutes straight. LOL. While he didn’t sing any of the TVB themesongs that I love, it was a fantastic show nonetheless. Is it wrong for me to call him very cute and still very handsome?! He is!

I Waited Until the Flower Withered.

Everlasting Love.

A few clips from fans who attended the concert! Ah, reliving the moments! Thanks for posting guys! I was too busy screaming and wiping snogs. XD

=======> ♦ So it’s been around 5 months since I started my new job at the hospital and I’ve made some significant lifestyle changes. When you see old people getting sick, it’s not as mind-numbing as when you see kids and young adults getting sick, all due to the fact that they grew up thinking and eating in a fast-paced environment. All the frozen food with additives and whopping sodium intake? Not very pleasant in your vessels. I just had to call out my brother’s frozen breakfast tray this morning and even he was surprised it has over 1100mg of sodium for a fist-sized portion.

As one grows older, you realize that health is the most important. Without health, all your materialistic wants and physical needs measure to nothing. I have cut out my sugar cravings this past month by not drinking soda! Instead I invest in a couple of nutty dark chocolate pieces (the 70% and above!) whenever I need a boost in energy and concentration. I have also started a routine 2-hour exercise in the past three weeks. The time that I usually spend blogging is now dedicated to good health. That means blogging has taken on a toll as some might have noticed that I’m not as fast as posting news articles anymore. It’s been quite liberating in some ways. Especially now that there are more news sources for C-Ent compared to when I started. I can go slow, nice and steady ~

=======> ♦ I received an email a few weeks ago asking why I haven’t posted anything about the cheating scandals of Li Xiao Lu x Jia Nai Liang and Chen Xiang x Mao Xiao Tong. To be honest with you guys, I don’t want to be a part of the witch hunt culture that cyber-bullies everyone involved in the incident, especially when we don’t know the truth or even half-truths. So unless it’s confirmed by the parties involved, I wish to stay neutral and at peace with my conscience.

Because I do want to go to a place littered with puppies and unicorns. Okie? =D

What’s happening in your life? Let’s learn from each other!

I went to a music program and took piano lessons for two years, and acoustic guitar lessons for three years. In addition all students also learned about how to read notes. Reading the notes is what I found the hardest because of poor eyesight. I knew there’s the play-by-ear learning method, but it was never used in school. So playing the guitar was easier for me, but still I think the piano sounds better. 🙂

I don’t think picking out the melody (right hand) for River Flows in Me by Yiruma by ear would be that hard, but it’s left hand I find harder.

I almost learned the guitar in college – one of my best friends had one lying around but my fingers and strings didn’t go together! XD

I’m really looking forward to playing a few Yiruma’s songs!

I wish one day I’ll get to see Jacky Cheung live!!!! He still sound so good!!

Yes! His voice! I can’t distinguish the CD vs his live singing!

You’re awesome sis, thanks for updating and sharing with what’s been going on. Glad you had fun at the concert. Checking bucket list is good. I need to check mine, but I lost the list somewhere. Anyway, best of luck to you and your piano endeavor. I hope you master all those lovely melodies. I would love to hear you play them someday. Maybe at my wedding. lol

Well, Chinese New Year is coming up, I hope more great blessing will come your way and hope nothing but the best reaches you. Thanks for all your blogging in the past. That’s how we met. You’ve been so inspiring. I don’t know if I have anything on my end. I’m thinking of studying science and make a time machine so I can go back and tell my young self to work hard and not slack off. Or maybe kidnap my baby self and ship him/me to Shanghai, so he/me can grow up to be close to her. You know the story. lol Also you work at a hospital, do you have any meds for love sick?

Anyhow, I don’t have much to share right now, sorry. I’m working on my singing, maybe one day we can be a piano/singing duo. Oh, I’m also working on my novel, which is taking like 800 years. I need to speed that up.

Thanks again for sharing, thanks for reading my nonsense. Take care! Love you sis! Keep doing what you do. And live all the best!

    • 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

LOL. At your wedding?! I wanna play at the proposal scene too! Heehee! If I’m ever confident enough to record and upload, I’ll definitely share. Hopefully, it won’t be 5 or 10 years from now. >.<" We have meds for pain.....love sick? Love meds = human form. *wink* Same goes to you! Thanks for listening to my rants from time to time!

Awesome updates! Good luck with that. When I was a music major I had to take piano. I struggled with playing two different things so I learned a lot of songs where the right and left hand play similar rhythms to pass my class.

For me I’ve been working on losing 100 pounds (36 pounds down so far). I did lose 88 pounds once before so I know what works. I just have to do it.

I’m still working on improving my Mandarin. This is the fourth language I’ve studied and I’ve been studying it for a year and a half now. It’s been my dream to become fluent in a second language, but so far have not managed it. But I’m hoping this time I can manage to do it. (If my mother could become fluent in Spanish in her 50s, surely I can manage to become fluent enough to watch my favorite dramas without subtitles.) Thankfully all that work translating Let’s Shake It has helped quite a bit.

Also trying to save up money for my trip to China this coming April and so I can take a cruise to the Antarctic next year.

I’d also really love to see Li YuChun live, but in the meantime, I’ll make a goal to write more (hopefully) interesting and fun movie and series reviews for AVV.

Congratulations on losing those pounds Enid! I have only lost 4 pounds so far and it’s been a month of these daily exercises. Let’s work hard together! Your mandarin is probably better than mine now, don’t be so hard yourself! Those who watched Let’s Shake It should be floored at your skills!

You and your traveling log is a source of Envy. I just started this job so accruing paid time off all over again!

Li Yu Chun is a talent, great pick! I would go if she ever drop by around here!

I am really glad to hear that you are learning piano and focus on living a healthy life. I also stop drinking soda.
This concert sound so much better than the last time I went to Mohegan Sun for a concert. I stop going there due to bad experience with sound system, weather and was not happy that they cut the concert short.

    • 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

I have only been to Mohegan Sun twice, each time for a concert. The first time was for The Four with Dicky Cheung, Edmond, Andy, and William. The sound system was definitely sub-par compared to Jacky’s sound system and he’s one man singing vs four! *thumbs up*

I used to play the piano for years until I moved out from my mother´s place and couldn´t take my vertical piano with me–the transport cost was too high and my 1room aparment too small..When I movied into my recent flat, I even wondered about buying a keyboad piano because you can play it no matter what time of the day..while with a “real” piano I would get into trouble with my neighbours if I started playing at 10 p.m…but again..no money for buying one lol. I wish you lots of happy hours playing!!

This is what I call a singer! Someone that sounds live as good as on CD…If I spent money on a concert ticket..I don´t want to listen to a recording…or to realize that they sound horrible live..Jacky Cheung knows how to play the crowd…to have fun with them..! Lol..I get envious just watching the convert vids…

Back in 10th or 11th grade I had to do a presentation about the E-numbers in food in chemistry class…I was shocked!! Since then I started cooking myself, all those bag soups and stuff were not on our shopping list anymore, especially as I changed my diet to ovo-lacto-vegetarian..Since then, when I buy food, I check the ingredients list.

To be honest, I am glad and also admire that you don´t post these scandals here…Most of the time I find the blogs and comments offensive as we don´t know the truth and also..it is really no business of ours…this is their life.

I’m having lots of frustrating hours first! Lol! Slow brain can’t process different notes with L and R yet. I need to practice more! 😀

An old couple was really lucky to get a sketch from his artist and even his big signature on the sketch! They were so cute with subtle display of affection. <3

You cook! You have my heart already. 😉

Congrats on taking control of your health. I am sad because this was the primary place I got my cdrama / chinese entertainment news and I liked your sunny approach to everything. You just sound like a nice person in real life, and I really respect you not posting scandals because that’s what everyone does nowadays for clicks.

May someone else can help you with posting chinese entertainment news

Continue to be happy ! will continue to support the blog.

Good for you happy. I stopped recapping regularly because I didn’t want to spends ours watching the same vids when I could be doing something else too. It was fine when I started because I had a lot of time on my hand but as we grow older other priorities take over and looking back I don’t regret it.

I don’t have a bucket list because I’m quite happy with what I’ve achieved but I do have a wish..have been for the past 5 years..and every year I pray that it will come true.

Adulting and prioritizing for the better! <3

May your wish come true, Maymay!

Awww Kappy, I’m glad you’re doing so well 😀
I have a keyboard lying around my family’s house ever since elementary. I barely got around to Fur Elise…I quit attempting other songs back then because I couldn’t even read music sheets (I just follow videos where people play the pieces). Probably should get back to that or other hobbies I’ve been wanting to try.
Sodium has never been pleasant, but knowing how some folks grew up and their environment, they don’t pay attention much to how much stuff is in their food.
Anyhow, as of now, I’ve just been trying to keep grades up and doing my usual research lol. I think my eyes gained bags ever since. Other than that I’m looking forward to a nice short break for New Year and attending my cousin’s wedding in spring.
    I wish you well~

Awww Fur Elise! Forgot about that one! My music box!

Speaking of weddings, I have a few to attend. What can I say, people my age are walking off the market fast! Lol.

Good to know you are learning a new skill!

Well, I have interest in languages, and they say it is harder to learn as we grow old. And for a while I believed in that, but now that I’m older I think my perspective changed, and in my personal experience, while speaking a language fluently can be more challenging – not only because I’m not young anymore but because I’m embarassed to speak (yeah, I know being shy is not good when learning a language)–, the advantage can be the in the way we think the language (voccabulary, grammar, culture). Also, now I am more focused than when I was younger. I mean, when I was younger learning a language was kind of homework, but now it is something that I like doing, specially when it involves learning about cultural aspects.

About being influenced by what other kids say, I guess it have to do with being/feeling accepted into a group, and when we are younger (and don’t know better) and other kids opinions and appoval seem to be more important than anything. I think I have so many memories of things other kids unintentionally said about me that have hurt me or made me stop doing something that I liked, like saying that I was fat, or that some food that I liked was gross…but I think I might have done the same too, haha.

    • 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

Learning a new language is hard because my high school teacher said the best way to learn is to be surrounded by the people and culture. My Mom: You can’t speak? You can’t eat! XD But with motivation, you can do it too!

Kids are pretty cruel, let me get that out! So it’s important to have mature and wise adults to guide them in the right direction!

  11. 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

Yay for picking up a new hobby, Kap! I donated my keyboard last year because I hadn’t touched it in over a decade. My high school offered piano as an elective, which I happily took for two years. “My Heart Will Go On” was actually one of the songs we played, in addition to “Beauty and the Beast” and many others. I quit playing after two years, though. My piano teacher was very strict and my skin wasn’t thick enough to live through his critiques in front of my classmates. I’d love to go back and kick my high school self for this. Lol.

Eating clean and healthy is a great thing. I know it’s better said than done but learning to read the nutrition labels is very important. Plus, eating a huge portion of healthy things doesn’t make it healthy. Those are things I’ve had to learn the hard way over the years.

I wouldn’t expect you to post scandals. To be honest, I’m just happy we’re able to freely talk about these scandals in the chat box.

    • 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

Awww! I have a thin skin too so overly mean criticisms would get to me! Just look at what happened when that roommate called my hands ugly! Lol! My Heart Can Go On (this version) sounds magnificent, definitely on my to-learn list!!

Heh, the cbox is a can of worms sometimes. But I like that news pass by there quickly and briefly!

Happy Valentine’s day. Kappy do you celebrate Chinese New Year?
Interesting you mentioned about additives and sodium in food. I open my restaurant serving healthy Chinese food with home made sauce, no MSG and no Chicken powder. Increasingly our customers are enjoying it. But the is 10% that always complain it is not salty or tasty enough as other Chinese takeaways.
I just tell him, eating too much additives, MSG and high salt level can kill you tastebuds. You just expects lots of salt in your dishes. They can live longer with a healthier lifestyle.

    • 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

      Happy Valentine’s day Hohliu!

I do celebrate New Year. It’s gonna be a chaotic and fun weekend, cause I also have Monday off! WEEEE! B)

One day, I would love to visit your restaurant! Do drop the name for fans interested in healthy food! =)

      • 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

I know. I’m interested too. I’m all for no MSG, less salt.

Maybe hohliu can do a great youtube cooking channel? lol. idk how to make great homemade sauces. Like those thick ones used for ducks. Or plum sauce.
When I search youtube for Shandong Chicken or Xihu Vinegar Fish etc. it’s hard to find a good vid. Sometimes I end up watching Taiwanese vids. They speak a mixture of Taiwanese and Mandarin. I have to guess what they say sometimes. It’d be nice to take great cooking classes in person. But that depends on which cities we live in.

I wish more C restaurants are more meticulous with their ingredients. Another thing to watch is the oil. Olive oil is likely the best. Partially/Hydrogenated vegetable oil can be high in saturated & trans fat.

Kappy, who are the good C restaurants in Boston? Once in a while I visit Boston and stay near Sidney St not far from the MIT campus. I had decent Malaysian food in the azn neighborhood, but didn’t like the C restaurant I tried despite the great yelp reviews it had. Tried Xiaolongbao etc. It was just ok.

Kappy dear, you’re becoming increasingly more like me. Thank you for sharing your stories.

Thank you very much for always thinking of AVV readers. And for making the experience as positive as possible, even if you end up making sacrifices like not monetizing AVV.

Which piano pieces are you learning right now? Do you want to learn how to read the manuscript too? As far as hands go, it’s easier if your hand can stretch at least as far as an octave without feeling strained. It’s funny your first song is the one my previous neighbor’s daughter used to play every weekend before they moved away. My parents bought a piano for me when I was 4. They made it my destiny, along with a comprehensive western classical music education that lasted over a decade. There were numerous exams from my music school plus working on teaching credentials via internationally recognized diploma-oriented exams. They really wanted it to be my backup career in case I suck at school. I’ve been too busy to touch my piano for 3-4 years. When I was in college and miss playing the piano, I envy the violin players who can play their violins in their dorm room. Since college, I moved almost every year so I didn’t bother to get a piano most years. I bought a guzheng 5 years ago but haven’t gotten to it the last 4 years. I want to memorize a few standard C guzheng songs first, but I haven’t gotten around to it. I learn a bit of foreign languages too. At least good enough to read a good part of most restaurant menus and navigate through websites for travel purposes. I’m ok with French, Italian, a couple of Asian languages. Starting on Japanese next. But that’s really slow going too. Ah. When I traveled to China, I didn’t realize “田鸡” is frog. I only knew 青蛙. I ended up ordering and eating frogs. Now I wonder how careful in learning Japanese menu items. I don’t want to end up eating frogs again and I’m not fond of innards either. Hopefully that’s easy to avoid if I don’t eat yakitori.

My primary gig is also health-related. For my health conditions that I’d rather not mention in detail here, I prefer to stick to low-inflammation diet. Low carb, paleo diet. Lower in saturated fats, dairy, preserved/processed meats. More protein and veggies. That has been a real challenge whenever I have to dine with others. My sibling & in-law live in town the last 10 years. They seem carb-obsessed. They are carb-foodies (?) Most times we go out, I get taken to Italian or Italian-inspired restaurants. 95% of the menu is carb or dairy. (Or bread, sandwiches.) Not much left in the standard Italian menu in my city beyond pasta and pizza. The food is also very salty. I’ve been trying to communicate this point verbally and in emails for several years now. I just had to do it this month. I hope they will finally remember. Not only that they don’t remember and take me to Italian food frequently, they also go on and on about how great croissants and specific breads are all the time. My palate doesn’t favor simple carbs, so I flat line at most Italian menus in North America.
I actually prefer sauteed veggies. It’s so much easier to eat more veggies that way. What are your fav food types?

Anyway, based on my reading, highly inflammatory food that’s high in glycemic index doesn’t seem good for anyone. It’s just that the effects are more obvious on some people than others.

Cinnamon is supposedly good for reducing sugar craving as it helps regulate blood sugar. But this type of studies are never rigorous. Unlike clinical trials where variables are under tighter controls. So don’t treat it as gospel. But you can experiment to see if it helps you. Add some to your coffee or tea, etc. Sprinkle some in dishes as appropriate. Some people add a bit of turmeric.

And I agree with you. Enid Bee’s work on Let’s Shake It is wonderful!

My personal belief is that there are always new things to learn in life. Thank you for learning together. I’m glad to have friends to learn along.

Hey An! My friend bought me this piano book called Simply Piano since I have no time for official classes with a teacher. I’ve been doing exercises in the book. It has me playing simple songs (Mary Had A Little Lamb, Jingle Bells, Ode To Joy) with one hand, then the other. Then add some flavors by playing simple chords with the left hand and playing the song with the right hand. I’m at the basic level. 😀 I think for now I want to learn how to play more > reading notes. Lol.

You own a guzheng! Would love to hear you play some day!! =D

When I’m out with friends, I binge-eat those high-sodium and heavily carbed food. I don’t mind since it’s only a few times per month. Like a cheat day. heh!

For my morning drink, I use organic honey from a local farm, with half a lemon, and a handful of fresh ginger. It hydrates well, promotes my digestion, and boost my immunity pretty well! And it taste really good!

Life is about learning and incorporating new knowledge to improve ourselves and those we love! <3 Thanks for sharing the tips!

Your digital piano is not like Yamaha’s Clavinova? I have an old Clavinova that can be used for DIY learning by following the lights. But idk how you make it play slowly.
It may be too fast if one is starting out. My Clavinova key-touch/movement is not pleasant to play though. Mine doesn’t age well.

Another thing many of us should devote some time on when we get older is honing our financial literacy. So we don’t have to rely on others to make investment decisions. But challenging to find the time to do it all. This relates to how I get frustrated at some leading ladies in idol dramas sometimes. They appear so helpless, it’s too frustrating to watch.

Not all carbs are bad, but the typical pizza or pasta I have to eat during group dining is far from the good kind. If not pizza, then my group opts to eat deep-fried meats, which is even worse.

Good balance of yin (lemon) and yang (ginger) btw.
Cinnamon is also supposed to be warming. I think cinnamon goes better with stronger tasting drinks like black teas and coffee.
Puer tea may also be good for digestion. But there are so many kinds of puer’s.
The chem and biochem of puer are also interesting to me.

I like ginger too. I’m trying to grow it myself by letting a big ginger root sprout and then plant the sprouted root. But failed at this attempt twice. lol. Planting green onions is so much easier for me.

        Happy CNY!!

Nope, it doesn’t light up prettily!

You’re absolutely right about handling financial investments. Everyone needs to make sure they don’t rely too much on another person. I have a financial advisor I meet up yearly to catch up. She’s wonderful and helped me with re-financing my school loans to manageable amounts.

You trying to grow ginger reminds me of my friend trying to grow an avocado tree in Boston! Lol. Yours are more doable though!

Have a great new year An!

        • 30 thoughts on “Discussion Post: Picking Up A New Hobby, Jacky Cheung’s Mohegan Concert 2018, Lifestyle Changes

          Happy New Year!!!!

Did your friend notice there are several YouTube vids on growing avocado from avocado seeds? I never tried doing anything with avocado myself but it may help to start indoors? But it may take a miracle to try without having a sunny window. Some plants don’t tolerate frost at all. So you’d have to fashion some kind of greenhouse. It can be quite troublesome.

The popular phrase these days is the evil is in the details, they said. Have to compare percentages and other terms. Some financial advice can be misleading. Some people experienced illegal bank or lender re-possessions. I’ve heard how others didn’t realize some subtle points when they selected some investments. Some alleged tax-advantaged investment choices actually charge a 1 or 2% flat rate of the entire invested amount in annual fees. While we typically only get taxed on *gains*. So you are guaranteed to pay a 1 or 2% in fees a year even the investments are losing money. There are multiple potential pitfalls.
