Exciting trailer for Nirvana In Fire 2 with Huang Xiao Ming and Liu Hao Ran

Set years after the prequel, Nirvana In Fire 2: The Wind Blows in Chang Lin (琅琊榜之风起长林) has a different story and pretty much unrelated to the first part. The story follows elder bro Huang Xiao Ming, general Xiao Ping Zhang of the Liang Dynasty, who is in charge of guarding the border but is severely wounded and eventually poisoned, which sets Little Bro Liu Hao Ran on a journey to uncover the 30-years old conspiracy/revenge pan, led by Guo Jing Fei.

Wasn’t Huang Xiaoming going to just be a cameo initially? Now he’s confirmed as the lead? Worried that his horrible acting will ruin the quality of the drama..

I’ve read somewhere that he is just kind of supporting role. His character will die in the midway of the drama…Anywa, is he really that bad? I actually never saw his act before.. kind of expecting this one after seeing its first trailer.

@ syntrax – yep! plus he looks terribly swarmy and phony these days. he fits the profile of a villain more than a male lead. I can’t stomach his expressions. this is going to be a hard pass for me.

0:12 reminded me exactly of the scene where our Mei ChangSu walked out. The feels 🙁

Don’t know what to feel about season 2 but I will give it a try first, though I am not fond of HXM’s acting as well. The only drama I liked him as the lead was ROCH.

Wait same!!! Despite the bad reviews for the 2006 version, I actually really liked the 2006 RoCH…but after that HXM is faaaar from a fav for me. I’m super excited for Liu Hao Ran cuz he’s one of my favs of the younger generation, but tbh while I haven’t watched the trailer yet, the stills make me feel like season 2 looks more idol-y and less epic/mindblowing than season 1. Tbh will prob still eagerly check out anyways cuz NiF was just that good.

I didn’t know reviews for that ver were mostly bad. The 2006 ver of ROCH is the classic of my generation and till now I still love it and rewatch it from time to time!

Exactly. Idk if it’s the product of the original novel and stuff, but 2006 version left me with a very deep love/hate with RoCH. For me, RoCH is completely and utterly heartbreaking. Despite the mostly happy ending, and the fact that it’s a love story that survives all obstacles, somehow their love feels very bitter-sweet and angsty the whole time. There’s never a moment where I feel like their love was anything other than beautiful but wholesomely painful. Like the ending and everything somehow leaves me with a very hollow empty feeling like…was it really happy ending even thought they stayed together? I think it’s very representative of the whole, even thought they prevailed through the obstacles in their love, those struggles left marks, and as the watcher I can’t help but feel only pain in their love. Also mostly because the story ends where yes the couple gets to fuck society and go live happy in seclusion, but the world kind of goes to shit too.

My emotions for RoCH remain very very strong and honestly it’s such an influential piece in my childhood and stuff, but I honestly can say all my emotions for it are positive. Also because LoCH to me is what RoCH is to you. LoCH is my utter favorite classic, so much so that I read through all 3 volumes of the very stiff translation of the original novel (even though I’m pretty sure I watched RoCH before LoCH). For me LoCH is very opposite, where their love is an adventure and they face struggles, but somehow their story remains extremely happy and carefree for me, and in the end, when the world goes to shit, you can still see them going on their adventures and saving the world along with it. Very classic hero story. I think that’s part of what makes RoCH so controversial to me. LoCH sets up Jianghu as such a carefree, make the rules as you go place. HR despite being “heretic” can basically do what she wants and waltzes through life. Jin Yong sets VERY strong themes of patriotism, heroics, right-wrong, black-white. Guo Jing is very very fair and makes black-white, right-wrong seem so logical and easy. On the other hand RoCH is almost the complete foil. Yang Guo is much more HR than Guo Jing yet with a decently strong moral compass. And despite everything YG as the main character blurs so many of the previously set black-white lines. Jianghu becomes so strict and full of societal conventions, patriotism is almost second to personal story. Everything Jin Yong sets up to be the laws of the novel-verse he created is flipped around. Worst of all, for me, my most beloved HR/GJ couple become almost hateful and terrible in RoCH. I hated HR and GJ, and their love story, in RoCH and it’s so hard to reconcile them with their younger selves from LoCH. It’s almost like Jin Yong made older-them caricatures of themselves in RoCH.

Lol rant over. As you can see…I have a lot of thoughts on RoCH.

oh no I’ve just watched this trailer. kinda feel like it’s half gonna suck or half gonna be digestible.
Question: is the actress’s voice not dubbed at 2:25? (the angry actress in the purple robe looks like an Empress with the blink-blink headpiece).

I kinda feel the wardrobe is not as good as the first season too, plus HXM.
I thought I saw huang xuan in here, but it’s not him. That actor looks like him.

The Huang Xuan lookalike actor portrayed the ultra-conservative boyfriend in Ode to Joy2. Dialogue in the drama even mentioned his resemblance to Huang Xuan.

I was worried about this sequel since NIF is still my top fave drama all time alongside with signal and secret forest (both from Korea). But reading the explanation that it has different story and not related to NIF, i feel relieved.

Ehm… HXM nowadays is just unbearable to watch despite of his good look. His acting is getting worse. Sigh. I used to like him back then 🙁

Thanks for subbing the trailer. Some good trailers impressed me at first but failed in airing process. This trailer doesnt impress me but who knows, i probably watch it to the end later.

Anyone knows why they call it NIF sequel when it has nothing to do with NIF’s story? The same novel or crew or producer?

-It sets in the same universe, several decades later after the end of NiF. The current Emperor is Jingyan’s son.
-Written by Hai Yan, the screenwriter and novelist of NiF.
-From the same director (Kong Sheng), also the same production company (Shanying, if I got the name right).

Read somewhere that HXM proposed a starring role in NIF2 for AB. Thankfully the producers didn’t bite, but how did HXM manage to snag a role?

anon!!! 😰🤣 Reading your comment, i’m serious, I felt my heart dropped to my stomach and I clutched my chest laughing. Shocked, upset, relieved, and now laughing, I cannot. . . . .

I’m pretty skeptical about all the choices for the leads (except for Tong Liya, I think she’s a decent actress). HXM, LHR, and ZHW all feel like idol actors to me, which is not what I watch Nirvana in Fire for. They can’t really act, judging from their previous works. I feel like after 2010, idols began to pollute the historical dramas, which is really such a shame. It used to be the only genre where you could find refuge from crap production and story line. I know that people hate on Jin Yong reproductions, but at least that results in a semi watchable plot even when they butcher it.
But hearing that the directors turned down AB gives me some hope lol

        • 18 thoughts on “Exciting trailer for Nirvana In Fire 2 with Huang Xiao Ming and Liu Hao Ran

To be fair, Hu Ge used to be an idol actor himself. I actually am looking forward to LHR, he’s one of the most talented in the up-and-coming batch (I mean, at least he’s not Li Yifeng or William Chan).

HXM is the big issue for me BUT I hold out hope that he’s billing as ‘Special Performance’ means that he’s a quasi-guest star that will only feature in the first few episodes and then have a more recurring role after.

IDK how the director do that- water looks shiny but even the blood looks shiny on his hand at 0:33 in the first trailer.

I imagine somewhere out there CNBLUE’s Jung Yong-hwa is excited watching these trailers.
Oh and it must be a lot of pressure to direct and act in this sequel. Did they cast not-so-popular actors (not talking about Huang Xiao Ming or Tong Li ya) in this one so that . . . well . . . they got legit actors that can act? but they are young and they’re fresh face (are new to me/never seen them before). . . or . . . the popular actors wouldn’t sign up for this coz they felt the pressure too? Imagine popular ones like Li yi feng or Zanilia Zhao Li Ying or Feng Shaofeng signing up for this but were rejected or they completely ignored it coz it’s kinda risky. Most sequels just aren’t as good as the first season (original).

On the other hand, if they casted popular actors, the nirvana fans might be mad too. It might looks too much “IP” drama-ish.

Can I just say the trailer looks amazing and really gets fans excited for the drama? I don’t mean to put any drama down, but this is so much better than the Princess Agent’s trailer, which I didn’t get how it got people excited for its drama back then. I really don’t wanna offend any drama but this is the kinda of trailers that is crisp. 👍 Less than a minute but quality 👍.
