Drama Sand Sea confirms Wu Lei, Yang Rong, Qin Hao, and Zhang Ming En

And it’s official. Yang Rong‘s co-stars continue to be younger and younger. xD Her next project puts her alongside Leo Wu Lei in Kennedy Xu’s novel, Sand Sea (Sha Hai 沙海). He’s turning 18 this year… Novel series Sand Sea I think takes place 10/15 years after The Lost Tomb and stands independently with four volumes, three of them revolves around the main character Li Cu played by Wu Lei (who’s been confirmed since June of this year.)

I read the first few chapters and here’s a quick summary:

There was a female writer who traveled to a mystical area in Badain Jaran desert with a friend and that friend committed suicide after returning from the trip. Supposedly, she climbed on a “rock.” The tragedy led female author to return to the same area to seek for the truth. She, too, returned and supposedly committed suicide as well.

Our 17-year old hero Li Cu (Wu Lei) wants to avoid a scolding from his dad so he intends to skip school for a few days. But in the middle of the road, he’s knocked unconscious and the attacker tattoos a strange picture on his back (among the scars, a hand with seven fingers). The attacker apologizes for dragging the kid in this mess and bleeds to death on Li Cu’s body (he was already severely injured and instead of seeking medical help, he chose to mark the boy’s back during his last breaths.)

When our hero awakens, he meets doctor Liang Wan (Yang Rong). A doctor with a wicked body and a sassy attitude. She knows something about the attacker and suggests dinner before telling him anything. At a food stall outside, they meet up with Wang Meng (Zhu Jie), and Li Cu immediately clocks Liang Wan’s interest, to his hormonal dismay. Wang Meng claims he’s the attacker’s colleague and he’s here to compensate for Li Cu’s suffering with a huge sum of money. But first, he wants to know every detail of the incident and they agree to talk at a hotel. In the room, Wang Meng tases Liang Wan and turns to Li Cu, telling him not to worry. He just doesn’t want Liang Wan to know more than she needs to…. then he approaches the student with a knife and taser, meaning to obtain the picture his colleague left on Li Cu’s back… *eeee*

Luckily for Li Cu, Liang Wan comes to in time and tases Wang Meng. They escape. On their way to Liang Wan’s home, Liang Wan reveals to Li Cu that Wang Meng and his people are tomb raiders. Three months ago, while raiding a tomb that dated back to the Sui dynasty, they discovered a mummy with strange markings on his back. The mummy was due to be transported back for further investigation but the man in charge went missing…until he was reported dead next to Li Cu. (Later revealed that this story was made up by Wang Meng, the real story is much more complicated)

They arrive home and a man named Wu Xie (Wang Meng’s boss, played by Qin Hao) has been waiting for them, enjoying his cup of coffee in the dark. He is calmer than Wang Meng and apologizes for his men’s aggressive behavior. He promises not to hurt the two and merely wants a closer look at the markings…

And Li Cu is pinned on his stomach and held there for Wu Xie’s careful observation and probing. When Liang Wan screams for him to stop causing more damage to the boy’s freshly-stitched up wounds, one man catches her throat, silencing her scream. Wu Xie softly orders the man not to hurt Liang Wan. Afterwards, he allows her to stitch the poor boy back up and Li Cu withholds his anger against Wu Xie, promising to pay back what was done to him today. Wu Xie then strikes a deal with Li Cu, he wants the boy to follow him to Badain Jaran for 12 days, with a winsome compensation, of course. But Li Cu wants to know the reason behind this expedition and Wu Xie explains about the dead freelance writer and the mysterious “rock” which turns out to be a unique tomb of some sorts, where ancient Mongolians stored stolen treasures.

However, Li Cu discovers another Wu Xie in the desert… [Kappy@AVV]

Actors Confirming their Participation:

Leo being cheeky with Yang Rong, who’s playing a doctor. He asks, “Doctor Liang, can you check my injuries first? And don’t see other men’s injuries again?” Lol.

Just to clarify, is the Wu Xie in the synopsis the same Wu Xie main character from the Lost Tomb series?

Yes, in that order, Mystic Nine, Lost Tomb, and Sha Hai. Wu Xie here is a bit older than during the Lost Tomb.

These Lost Tomb/related novels adaptions kept on disappointing me. I have already given up on this adaption even before it started. As much as I love Leo and YR…
I wonder why they went on to make the adaption of Sha Hai, when they didn’t even complete the Lost Tomb adaption. I actually liked LYF and YY as Wu Xie and Xiao Ge, just that the script writing screwed it all up.

The Wu Xie in Sha Hai is really a matured man in comparison to his Lost Tomb days; not really sure about Qin Hao because my impression of him stopped at Sound of the Desert, and it’s just an average feeling.

Did I remember wrongly but didn’t Wang Meng betray Wu Xie already? It has been 2 years since I finished the novels and I have been reading lots of fan written Lost Tomb novels that I have a hazy memory of the story and may have even mixed up the fan written plotlines w the original novel because they are really good.
