What’s the occasion? Drama The Rise of Phoenixes drops a wagon of character stills just an hour ago. We usually get like 6 or 9 stills but over 20?! Thank-you for being generous production team! The rich and dark color palette stands out. SO PRETTY!
New Character Stills:
Upcoming period drama, The Rise of Phoenixes (凰权弈天下) is based on the novel Huang Quan written by Tian Xia Gui Yuan (pen name). Our male lead is a scheming sixth prince Ning Yi (Chen Kun). Female lead, Feng Zhi Wei (Ni Ni), is an illegitimate daughter of a kingdom who is later framed for a crime and evicted, which leads to her cross-dressing into a famous academy and shines with her keen intelligence. She then seeks vengeance against those who wronged her. This sounds pretty awesome based on the reviews and it’s nice to have our both of our leads as smart and cunning people, sometimes cruel in order to obtain what they want.

The costumes and sets are like a feast to the eyes~ 😍 Bai Jing Ting is nearly unrecognizable in his role. It’s just not the look but his fluffiness seems to have disappeared. I guess his character is like the brooding bodyguard teehee

I thought it was another 3L3W Mark Zhao when I saw Chen Kun’s pictures lol!
I didn’t know Wang Ou is in this drama too!!! Yay! Great to see her again! Hope she appears more in historical dramas!

Ikr 🙂 I’m currently rewatching 3l3w and I thought I was halucinating. It really looks like Yehua’s wig was passed on to Chen Kun :))))
I haven’t seen show/movie with Chen Kun in it in ages and I believe this will be the very first time I see NIni in anything.
The stills look amazing and the story seems promising but I’ll do my best to trample down any hope and anticipation. Most of my faves have dissapointed me this year and my fangirl heart can only suffer so much …
Thanks for the update, Kap! 🙂

Yay, Chen Kun!! Anything that has him in it has me squealing. I loved him in The Conquest and have been waiting for him to return to filming dramas for a long while. I’m glad that I can see him again on the small screen. Even more exciting is that his first returning drama is one of my favorite genres, historical romance.

THE COLOURS! Finally a drama that’s not all pastel or bright. The stills look gorgeous. This just looks like a premium production. I’m definitely going to check this one out.

These stills look great and the plot sounds very good. Definitely my most anticipated for 2018 at the moment. Glad to see more new dramas like this and The King’s Woman with more rich natural colouring than the uber glossy idol drama lighting that has marred too many recent projects.

Chen Kun alone would attract me to give the series a look-in. Ni Ni and Yuan Hong as well? I will definitely need to check it out.
The aesthetics is quite moody and serious. This will hopefully be reflected in the series and we will get a focus on good story and characterization.

If that sixth picture is still Yuan Hong, those mustache are beautifully dark sexy with an intense stare!! The first pix of Ni Ni, I was confused about wassup with such a big bun when she’s wearing men clothes? The smaller bun is much better, could still go smaller or not as high.
But I love the colors and styling for all the others and everything else, equally beautiful to the King’s Woman style, although the pace for that drama stinks a lot. Every time a new drama comes out they get worse and worse and makes me worried, luckily web dramas usually do so much better every time.

I won’t lie, I scream a little when I saw this post! I skimmed some of the first chapters of this book and find the main character clever and cunning. I love the fact that she seems to be a bit of an anti-hero, which is a trait treated like the plague for female leads in dramaland. I hope they let her go dark, and trust the audience to disapprove of her methods but still want to root for her anyway (that’d be absolutely great storytelling but I won’t hold this drama to such expectations).
Like everyone else, I’m really loving the look of this drama. It feels regal and slick, like we’re watching a movie directed by Zhang Yi Mou. The cast is naturally stellar. No words needed for Chen Kun. Ni Ni has always been classically beautiful and as dressed in man garbs, she looks like one of those beautiful, intelligent, sensitive scholars we see described often in novels.
I’m pleasantly surprised by Xiao Bai and Wang Ou popping up in this drama! I have a soft spot for them after watching Who’s The Murderer. I wonder if Chen Kun introduced Xiao Bai to this role, since they were in the same variety. So many variety connections! Of course, Yuan Hong and Liu Min Tao are always a treat to watch!
Sorry for the word vomit, I’m so excited asdfghjkl. Any idea when it’ll air?

The plot and the two leads sound awesome, hoping it doesn’t turn out like General & I. Definitely going to check out this drama for the supporting cast at least (Xiao Bai, Wang Ou, Yuan Hong & Liu Min Tao altogether in one drama YESSS).

Can’t wait to watch it. New face and new pairing. Tire of the same people on screen. Hopefully it will have a happy ending.
