It’s based on the novel by Xin Yi Wu and was just adapted into the 2 movies; prequel with Mark Zhao and Yang Yi Shan and sequel with Kris Wu and Liu Yi Fei! Then there’s the webdrama version with Chen Yao, Yang Le, and Ma Ke….

Idk. I feel it’s a waste for duplicates. Hoping for new adaptations!

Any updates on LY? No more dramas/shows til next year. ☹️️

      • 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

Yep, just the two dramas (Time and Ming Lan). Some unofficial pictures floating here and there with Li Ying and the cast members. Honestly, Li Ying has been constantly in the news and with the bad taste PA left after its trail, I sorta need a break from her news. Lol. If that makes senses. XD

          I get it lol

I’m just anticipating new projects. GT is very low key. Looking forward to more news when she films ML.

I know Kappy might not expect the first comment to be about Wu Jing, but I just wanna talk about him a bit.
Coz he’s a much older actor and are not in a lot of recent tv dramas so not many people know him or wanna talk about him.
I wanna share this vid https://youtu.be/InZNRlNMlgw
coz I love him to death!

Why not, Royce?! Don’t worry about it! I love Wu Jing since the early 2000s when he was still doing dramas. =)

I thought there are endless fresh IPs out there ripe for adaptation..why are we seeing the same stories over and over again…. 😭

I actually know Wujing only from movies..he was in almost every HK action movies at one time…I didn’t think he was an unknown. Anyway the plot is apparently very patriotic that’s why it’s doing really good.

    • 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

I’m baffled at these productions too, remaking the same story over and over.

Wu Jing was very cute back then in his drama roles. 😉

This post just makes me go WTF. SO MANY FREAKING REMAKES. Why oh why, are C-drama writers so bad? They either adapt from novels (and most of the times, its a bad job done), adapt from their Korean (or other countries) counterparts OR adapt from their past dramas/films. Seriously…

  6. 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

Just wondering… does China have any dramas with original scripts? Feel like they are always adapting from somewhere: novels, korean dramas/movies, past dramas, recent movies. What are their scriptwriters for? On top of that they do a very bad job at adapting from novels as well (just look at the mess that is PA).

    • 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

I thought most things were adapted from novels….no? Easier to adapt from novels if you have to shoot the whole thing at once like in China.

    • 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

They definitely do, but not as mainstream as dramas with younger actors in it. Those dramas usually have veteran and seasoned actors, and not as promoted.

From expats living in China I’ve heard that part of the issue could be cultural. In order to be considered good at something within an artistic format, it was traditional to first spend the first years copying the masters until you could successfully imitate them. Then you were considered good and could go on to create your own work. So it would make sense that so many successful products are copied.

Of course even Hollywood does the same thing. You can’t get studio backing unless you can show that your project is going to have an audience, hence adaptations of successful books or foreign TV shows or when you suddenly see an actor or director or producer who had one hit suddenly putting out a bunch of work because everyone wants to tie them into their project to get a green light or when one cop show or comic book movie/TV show suddenly begats dozens. Anything original you see is usually due to the right producer or showrunner behind the scenes with enough money, clout or autonomy to be able to get the go ahead on something. (And also why you’ll see someone work on something very commercial that allows them to work on their pet projects, i.e. Steven Soderbergh.)

I think it’s more obvious with the Chinese content for fans with limited Mandarin which means access is limited to whatever we can find subbed in our own language (or how willing we are to watch without benefit of captions and see what we can figure out which is me with most Chinese variety shows) so an already small pool can make repeated stories/themes even more obvious. And also I’m sure the SARFT restrictions adds some additional challenges with storylines as well (i.e. Ice Fantasy and Go Princess Go suddenly having to stop down production while their shows were being “updated” due to new regulations.)

I was pleasantly surprised when Princess Agents actually turned around English captions 8 hours after broadcast for two episodes as just 10 minutes of broadcast time can take 30 minutes to transcribe and even more to translate. (I used to work on subs for live TV series where we’d only get three days to turnaround high quality subs for broadcast and that was only possible having translators in multiple time zones working round the clock and literally up until air time.)

Of course China hasn’t really been that concerned with foreign markets for their content, at least not in the same way that Korea has. And given the size of their local audience that’s not too surprising as I’m guessing they don’t generate as much income outside China so the cost of subbing in other languages may not seem like a worthwhile investment unless they are certain they can get a big enough audience. (AMC Theaters are mostly owned by Wanda Studios in China and they show Chinese movies in the US, but opt to only advertise those movies within Chinese speaking communities and usually show them a week after they premiere in China.) But maybe if shows like Princess Agents can get enough views, we might start getting access to more content. For now I just keep bugging Netflix to get more Chinese content. 😁

They should stop adapting different drama versions and movie versions LOL. It’s a not a definite business-wise move anyhow since there will be comparison and if production don’t have the bigger budget or better casts, then it probably won’t be successful as its predecessors. As great it is to have better casting, a lot of times the scripts are terrible.
No more CP ;___; I’ve watched them all and they are all tragedies imo.
Awww I haven’t followed Wu Jing in a while. He had a baby face when he was younger and Ashton reminds me of Wu Jing by a bit lol.
Waiting for Minglan and Glamorous Time dramas from ZLY and hoping they are 10x better adaptations than PA. Minglan’s English translation is slowly going by, I doubt they will reach half way through the novel by the time the drama air, or maybe they will who knows lol. I think the translator for GT quit or was in need of translators. By the time GT air, maybe some people will come forth to translate the whole thing like what happened to NIF, except they stopped translating it (probably due to the difficulties).

Does C ent world not know sometimes it’s better to leave the audience wanting for more?

C ent behind the scenes politicians and biz men/women look like they can’t resist milking every drop out of every potential asset they have since the starting point. They do it to dramas like PA, Chusen. They do the same to actresses too like ZLY. Multiple movie or drama versions. Next they will turn each movie and drama into video games, product adverts, and mangas to try to get more money out of each story?

They re-make every imaginable story. What hasn’t had re-makes yet? How many more times will we do Monkey King? The scripts of all these Monkey King movies must have long exceeded the entire original Journey to the West novel by now.

I hope Minglan will not disappoint. Having gone through consecutive ZLY summers with HQG, Chusen and PA. I’m not sure I can stomach another disappointment. I hope to have forgotten enough PA by the time ML gets broadcast.

Wow…they are remaking story of a noble family? No pool. They original was so perfect. Heck Chen Kun and Liu yifei could still play their parts even though this was like 15 years ago. I feel like half of how good it was Chen Kun ‘s charm.

  9. 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

Duplicate remakes or not, I would really like a Rachel Mao/William Yang Xu Wen pairing.

Anyways that aside, I don’t wanna sound like a downer since I love action but Wolf Warrior really just seems like it’s another generic Hollywood action film. Like I’m sure it’s really entertaining still and action does well with simple but well-executed formulas. But honestly is there anything special about it I’m missing that’s making it do so well in theaters? I’m not hating on it…just honestly curious.

Rakshasa looks mildly entertaining, also cuz I love the animation so much, but is it just me or has the brother been relegated to supporting/non-existent? Is this Rakshasa inspired but just not an adaptation of season 1 plotwise? They did a good job with the song and the feel of the whole thing tho. I might check it despite Jiro’s questionable presence, my hate for the female character, and the seemingly blatant lack of bromance.

  10. 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

So You’re Still Here isn’t even a good story that’s worth adapting once, let alone multiple versions.

Wolf Warrior 2 is nationalistic fluff.

On the other hand, was missing my Elvis dose lately so decided to reconsider Siege of Fog since there are some leaked stuff on youtube…(or is it already out???)

Lol spent all of its promotional period reluctant to watch Siege in Fog cuz basically everything about it is not my thing. BUT went back today to rewatch the 9-min trailer and Elvis…Elvis is an underused gift to the celebrity world. Nuanced acting, hotness abound, incomparable charisma. Man. In any other situation I would HATE his character. But somehow in character here, I find myself rooting for him every step of the way even through his violent and basically-assault actions. I see the f***-off things he does but somehow emotionally I still connect with his illogical but emotionally charged words like “how can you expect me to treat you tenderly when you’ve never loved me all through our marriage”. Those are classic blame-the-victim-BS that we all hate in RL but somehow he still makes me understand, agree, and root for him with his impeccable acting. I can’t…now even I’m conflicted…

Watch this Youtuber explained why Chinese’s production companies don’t produce original scripts, starting 13 min in the video.

  13. 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

Finished watching the first three episodes of Let’s Shake It! and, even without subs, it’s hilarious. A definite Go Princess Go feel, but more slapstick.

Hi Kappy, this is very random but I am just lost where I can get more information on Legend of Dragon Pearl. Is there more season to the drama? The end is rather peculiar and there is just so much more story to tell. Is there more confirmed season? I hope it is not too long later…

    • 27 thoughts on “Bulletin Board: Cdramaland & Entertainment News (58)

Well, they did say they wanted to do a Game of Throne type of series but no confirmation on the castings as of now for the later possible seasons. But after 90 episodes, I don’t know if they want to commit more time in it. Lol.
