Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I love how whenever they dress Yang Mi as a male, she looks the same in all her dramas with that cute little scholar hat. Lol. Legend of Fu Yao (扶摇) is adapted from the novel written by Tian Xia Gui Yuan and began filming on June 27th and plans to film for about 5 months.

Synopsis Translated by Tranzgeek: The Everlasting Imperial City that leads all of China, Tiansha, Xuanji, and the sects of learning, the holy land, as the sky separates Fufeng and the ocean, as they face one another. In the distant past, the firmament once gave birth to a god – a lotus, that formed into Meng Fuyao (Yang Mi). In childhood, Fuyao was cast into the depths of Yuanjian Sect. Because of her aptitude for being stupid, she was subject to the disdain of her teachers. When she was 16, she “broke into the 9th heaven”, a remarkable feat that henceforth made her dedicate herself to martial arts progress. To gather the secret orders of the world, she quietly waits for the Fufeng Sea to merge with the ocean. On that day, she sets out for the vault of heaven. Fuyao steps into the world, and her experiences pave a pathway. She and the crown prince, Changsun Wuji (Ethan Ruan) of the Everlasting Imperial City gets acquainted and falls in love. The two people cooperate to settle disputes and usurp power of the Taiyuan Regent. The army in the south of the Wuji Nation violates the boundary, and that is when the Virtuous Imperial Palace changes as Prince Lie of Tiansha fights the north and allies with others to regain his royal power as the heavens terminate. It is then made known that Fuyao’s is Xuanji King’s daughter. Everyone accompanies Fuyao in leaving for the firmament, as she uses her flesh and human body to contend against the evil things of the distant past, to save the heavens. After experiencing many hardships and perils and trials, in the end they defeat the conspiracy revolving around the heavens and get rid of all malicious and demonic roads, protecting the peace of the world. Fuyao and Wuji’s love also succeed in bearing good fruit. [DO NOT TAKE OUT WITHOUT AVV PERMISSION.]

Note: Changsun Wuji belongs to the Wuji Nation. The Wuji Nation’s capital is the Everlasting Imperial City. Tiansha, Fufeng, and Xuanji are all places.

Directed by Yang Wen Jun (So Young, You Are My Sunshine Movie), Xie Ze (Great Expectatons), and Li Cai, and written by novel author and Jie Yan Yan (Hua Xu Yin), Legend of Fu Yao plans to have 60 episodes.

Her forehead isn’t an issue imo. But her haters are. They pick on her in everything; from why she dresses nicely at airport to why she dared to posy about seeing her teacher on her weibo. I’m sure she tired after all the hair bashing with TMOPB and just avoid it all together. Big forehead mean smart in Asia anyway.

They look good together and YM is pretty. Can’t wait
But how come her drama with Tao hasn’t had the teaser yet? It will be out in weeks right?

Yang Mi, Fan BingBing and ZhangZiyi have endured so much internet abuse. Thankfully, they’re strong and managed to survive through it all.

At least FBB and ZZY have long scandalous history but what has YM done? She was blacklisted in between on someone fight… Yet she never badmouthed them…

I think a lot of stuff about them was fabricated and exaggerated. The media does unethical reporting to gain eyeballs and competing fans go on smearing campaigns against ‘rivals’ of their idols.. it’s a nasty environment.

I don’t really like Yang Mi and find her acting really lacking, but I do have to admit that she really does know how to pick her projects….

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Looking through YM’s drama lists again, that’s true, her projects were always good. Even when she played a small role in YZ’s Beauty World, it was good too.
I’m not a fan of hers but I don’t see how she’s lacking in acting though, I’ve seen worse and she don’t compare to them so that means it’s got to be pretty good.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

In her drama, she can’t express the emotions of her characters well. I usually only see her showing one type expression in most of the characters she played. I don’t really know about your comparison though, because if she acts better than other terrible actors/actresses, then does it really make her a good actress?

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I think she is on and off… and need good roles to shine, like most actors. She lack depth but it’s the general problem with most chinese actresses and not only her… I think people don’t give her the credit she deserves… I hardly could think of anyone in her generation can do all 5 roles like she did in EL and nailed it well. Yes there are moments I wish she could have done better but overall she proved he ability in the drama IMO.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

@pamda maybe it looks like one type of expression because it is only 1 face playing different emotions. She’s always been pretty good at crying, laughing, serious, etc.

I feel that there are many people thinking that actors/actresses are better at acting if they can play a variety of roles, I don’t believe in that. Not everyone can act like “everything” unless they have a neutral face like Sun Li, Liu Tao, and Liu Shi Shi who can go cute or serious and it doesn’t matter, but for people with cuter faces it’s harder for them to do serious and mature roles. Esp. Joe Chen, she was great in Frog Prince or whenever she’s a funky girl, but to play a beauty? You cannot act out beautiful, it’s got to be the looks. It’s much harder seeing her as a damsel in distress. Even ZLY has to look pretty haggard as CQ, I think her face would be too non-serious if she was styled like JOF as CQ. Looks matter quite a lot in choosing the right roles, it’s not really the acting all the time. I think Jing Tian and Gao Yuan Yuan look like goddesses when they play mature and elegant, but that can change pretty differently if they get out of that box to try to go a bit more noisy and jumpy or playful. I would count anybody’s acting as good if they master one of their roles before somewhere. LGX did fine in BBJX but very emotionless as YWY, that was a character issue too besides looks and acting. There are always too many factors to which why things turn out successful and not so successful.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

          I agree with you here.
I’m really tired of hearing how Yang Mi “played 5 roles in Eternal love and nailed it” or whatever. Yes, she wore 5 different outfits and acted out 5 roles but that’s because the scripts tells her to do so, it’s not that she successfully delivered those 5 roles.
Yes, when she does Xuan Nu, it’s different, but that’s not much acting as it is mannerism imitation (if you’ve taken drama classes, you know what I’m talking about).
Whenever her character does something, I have to stop and think a little and then I’d be like “ok, that’s how it should be because that’s how the story goes”.
Zhao Liying has led in JoF, Liu Shishi has led in BBJX, their acting skill is not too much below their male counterparts and they have proved that they can lead. But Yang Mi has never been able to do that.
She’s a great business woman and she can pick her projects well but the truth remains that her acting skill needs some serious improvement.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Personally, I think many supporting roles are better than lead roles.
YM shined the best when she played supporting role in earlier of her career. I also think there was no prejudge against her at that time because she was new and she has more time to focus and immerse to characters as she wasn’t as busy as she is today.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Like you said, most Chinese actresses in her generation are terrible. They received lead roles based on popularity not skills. That’s why I don’t think comparing with them will prove that YM is a better actress. Maybe when she gets to Sun Li or Liu Tao level, then a comparison will make sense to me. On EL, it is my personal opinion, but I still do find her performance awkward and one sided. Maybe she’ll gets better in the future and I will retract my words, but now, not so much…

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

YM is really a veteran, having her start at age 4 in a Stephen Chow film. I first saw YM in her first starring role as Wang Zhaojun from about 15 years ago.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

YM used to be pretty decent, and started out acting quite a couple of proper dramas, which was good for building public goodwill. She was actually really well liked before her breakout drama Palace. After the association with YZ she shot to fame and got a ton of anti-fans as well. That and contractual disputes with her company.

I think her acting really isn’t great, and as pointed out there really is no point comparing her to her counterparts who are equally as bad (or worse). But that being said, if I see YM’s name in a production, it draws my attention to it. Her acting isn’t awful enough to be too distracting anyway. I honestly think that atm she’s number one in Chinese television.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

@yoyo_oy Then I guess you and I are definitely on a completely different spectrum regarding our opinions about acting. True, some actors/actresses have a face that makes their transition into certain roles easier or more desirable. However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t act in other roles. Isn’t the point of acting is that you can transform yourself into any characters and make it believable to the audiences? I don’t think a cute face prevent an actor/actress from choosing a more serious role or challenging themselves with roles that are outside of their familiarity. For example, Yang Rong and Tong Li Ya both have pretty cute faces, but that doesn’t stop them from showing several expressions in a variety of roles. Additionally, I really don’t believe in such a thing as a “neutral face.” Also true, several factors such as picking the right drama and characters also play into the actors/actresses hit or miss in their career. Still, that is not a reasonable excuse for them not completing the role and showing authenticity in the character they played.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Tong Li Ya isn’t cute. She is very highly regarded for her beauty, unlike Yang Rong. Just pointing out that she doesn’t work as an example. I actually do agree with the “neutral face” factor. I don’t think it’s that much of a limiting factor, but it’s difficult imagining someone like Jang Nara playing an antagonist. You can’t really transform yourself into just anybody and make it believable no matter how good of an actor you are. You can’t make me believe that Zhou Xun will make a great Xiao Long Nv. Some roles do have certain requirements of the actor’s appearance, and no matter how good an actor is at his/her craft he/she can’t overcome that.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

True, Tong Li Ya is highly regarded for her beauty, so are most of the actresses mentioned in this post. Does that mean that all of their fans regarded them as that? Since beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and all of it is opinion based. Do you really expect that everyone will have the same standards about an actress? I might regard her as cute, you see her as beautiful, and someone else might think that she’s not. As I mentioned before, I did not deny that it is easier for some actresses to fit into certain roles. True, Jang Nara does best in the innocent young girl type of character, but that doesn’t mean she can’t thrive in a more serious role. Well, we may never know because she hasn’t tried it yet. I’m not going to try to convince anyone that Zhou Xun can play Xiao Long Nv or any other roles. Firstly, she never played that role before so no one can really know how well she will do. Secondly, based on her past projects, she already proved that she is a versatile actress and can play a variety of characters. I’ve already seen actresses transformed themselves from one extreme to another for their roles, so no, I still don’t think the cuteness of a person’s face is a limiting factor.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

When Yang Mi plays a minor role, she’s great. But she has never been able to lead. Looking back at her dramas, most of the time, it’s her partner that does the majority of the work and draws in the target audience. William Feng, Huang Xuan, Mark Zhao, Hu Ge, etc.
I’m not sure about this but I heard one of the reasons why they made Ten Miles into a Ye Hua centered drama is because they knew for a fact Yang Mi couldn’t steer the boat. It was originally supposed to be Bai Qian’s story.
And the problem is not with Yang Mi, it’s with her die hard fans, they trended the line “there’s no Bai Qian after Yang Mi” (like, really?) and rage war with anyone who criticizes her acting so it looks like the netizens are giving Yang Mi a hard time but that’s not true.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Obviously a lot is just personal opinion but I totally disagree that “she has never been able to lead”. In both Palace and Eternal Love she was definitely the main protagonist and the story revolved around her character–she did a perfectly admirable job in both, bringing her character to life. (I haven’t watched the Interpreters so can’t comment on that one, and with Hu Ge his character in CP3 was definitely the main protagonist so that’s a moot point.) I felt her male costars complemented her perfectly but in no way overshadowed her. (Even in Eternal Love, where Mark Chao blew everyone away with his acting chops, Yang Mi held her own as the female protagonist.)

Yes, if we are nit-picky there are parts she can improve upon. However overall I felt she does a fantastic job with her characters, and her chemistry with her costars is almost always off the charts! I can’t think of another actor/actress who has produced so many crazy popular “ships” in their dramas as Yang Mi has (which I feel is a testament to how well she can play off her male costars and generate sizzling chemistry in dramas). Let’s be real, if her acting sucked that much, she wouldn’t be able to get so many viewers totally invested in her drama characters’ storylines and relationships. I have seen plenty of on-screen ships where the actor/actress is so dull/boring, the relationships just falls flat because the other actress/actor can’t generate chemistry with a rock. YM is the complete opposite of this.

I do feel that early on (in her teenage/early 20s) her acting was more “natural” and “fresh”; her bright eyes just seemed to exude emotion. In her mid-20s she did seem to become a bit more conscious of herself acting for some reason. Lately though I think she’s been getting much better again. And even at her “worst” acting, I found that the criticism of her acting was way overblown because she is definitely one of the best post-1985 actresses.

I highly doubt the accuracy of that 3L3W rumour–for one, the drama still mainly revolves around Bai Qian. For another, the drama obviously incorporates more of Ye Hua because I heard they added in parts from Ye Hua’s epilogue, and in general spreads the focus around on various characters (vs. the novel which was entirely told from Bai Qian’s first-person perspective, which they obviously were not going to duplicate in a drama adaptation). I would hardly call it “Yehua-centred”, though of course it is mainly a love story about the YH/BQ couple so you can certainly make the case that it is centred around both of them.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

          @mango_cake
You are right, Yang Mi WAS given the opportunity to lead in Palace, but what I said was she was not able to lead, she never has been because her acting is too neutral and plain. If you take away the hot and talented male leads in all her dramas and replace it with actors who are as neutral as she is, would we still get the same viewership with Yang Mi’s not-too-bad acting?
To your question: why is she able to create many crazy “ships” if her acting sucks? The answer is: why was Twilight able to create the crazy ships even though it obviously sucked? Two words: TARGET AUDIENCE.
Sun Li is no doubt a better actress, so are Zhou Xun, Gan Tingting, Zhou Dongyu. They have been involved in serious historical dramas with values. But they don’t have as huge a fan base as Yang Mi (who has been in the industry for so long) and their dramas and movies target a different population of audience.
And you might not be surprised to hear this but a lot of people have expressed that the chemistry in Ten Miles was reduced a significant amount because of her plain acting. And the key word is BELIEVABILITY. Whatever Mark Chao and the rest of the cast did, good or bad, it’s believable. What Yang Mi did is not, and most of the time I don’t see a Bai Qian, I see the same Yang Mi I’ve seen in Palace (yes, it’s an embarrassing thing to admit but I have seen this drama) and Schemes of Beauty and Interpreter and so on.
It wasn’t too horrible to distract you from the fact that TenMiles is generally a good drama but it could have been much, much better if they went with another actress.
About the theory I told you, it’s just as believable as any other theory as to why Yehua is more focused on in the dramas, after all, they’re all theories. A dramas with a great female lead can draw in both male AND female audience, so why did they cut out too much of Bai Qian’s storyline so Yehua can have more screentime? One: it’s the reason I said. Or two: it’s because they wanted to attracted more female audience. And I’m not sure which one is a better scenario.
All being said, we can agree on one thing: Yang Mi’s earlier works were inspiring. They are the reasons why I grew to like her and (note this) I think she is a strong role model for young people. But acting is not something she does best.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I don’t see how YM couldn’t lead Palace despite it being a YZ drama, it was a big hit and ever since then you can see every actress started trying to act like a modern girl in ancient days, and then time traveling started to appear more and more everywhere. I also remember Fengmi being one of the craziest ship ever, Ariel lin’s pairing with FSF was cute but it didn’t come out as wild. More people liked BBJX but the shipping in there was not as crazy either.

Yeah it’s just personal opinion, I don’t think Mark Zhao is even hot or handsome…he’s just, not bad looking, they also overly smoothed his skin and he lose that natural manliness then put him in old witch’s black gown. He acting was very stiff bc his character probably requires him to be the serious and quiet guy as well, like Lin Gexin’s YWY, they were very similar to each other except for that Mark gets to cry and smile like a real person and they made LGX a 100% robot, and Mark is also convincingly romantic. If an actor that does not look as good as Mark were to play 3L3W (as long as he looks like a man (not girly or kiddish) ), it should still be a success considering the role is not really that complicated, both the master and crown prince had the same attitude/acting. Mark alone does not define the success of 3L3W

I did not feel ZLY’s HQG that good because my taste is not about being overly sugary, but her acting was fairly superb in acting nice, only the evil part was terrible and overly done. Would JoF be successful without Wallace too then? Well, I guess Wallace was also another robot in there so it could be w/out him. Women always power more in dramas.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

The only problem I have with Yang Mi is that she’s too conscious of her acting, which makes it seem like her roles are similar. But whatever I guess, since she brings the attention and hype, her other co-stars can do the acting. She isn’t horrible to the point she is able to ruin a drama.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I disagree totally. You can say anything you want about Yang Mi’s acting. But honestly, replace her male leads with anyone remotely serviceable and it’ll still be a huge draw. She makes the drama, not her partner. You must be out of your mind to think that it’s her male co-actor’s credit for attracting the audience. Who the hell knew about William Feng, Huang Xuan, and Mark Chao before they collaborated with her? If not for Palace, Les Interpretes and Eternal Love, I won’t even take notice of any of them. In fact, HX and MC were huge turn-offs for me and I wouldn’t even have tried the dramas if not for YM’s credentials as a “hit-maker”. And even after those dramas, I’m not going to follow their careers. Put Mark Chao in a different production and he can’t make me watch it.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

          @kitai
First of all, even though your opinion is the complete opposite of mine, I would never go so far as to call you “out of your mind” like you just did to me.
Secondly, yes, your comment hit the main point. Yang Mi knows how to make lesser known actors more popular, which is by cooperating with her and her company, which I praise her for. But that doesn’t equal good acting.
“Who the hell knew about William Feng, Huang Xuan, and Mark Chao before they collaborated with her?” That is true.
But let me give you the facts, Huang Xuan has worked with Zhou Xun before (yes, THE Zhou Xun) in a much more serious product with greater historical and cultural values: Red Sorghum. But still he couldn’t get popular, and the reason is definitely not because Zhou Xun’s acting is not as good as Yang Mi or because Red Sorghum is not as good as The Interpreter, it is because of the audience demographic and Yang Mi knows how to work her TARGET AUDIENCE and how to gain popularity.
Using your logic, I would say this: If it weren’t for Twilight, who would even remember Robert Pattinson who used to appear in Harry Potter?
Twilight knows how to promote young actors, But does that mean Twilight is a GOOD (or even watchable) series?
Despite our differences, I admire your passion to defend what you love and I would love to shake hands with you.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

          @Katy
          I agree with you.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

          @yoyo_oy
I agree with some of your points and disagree with some others.
About Mark Chao, you’re right, he is not good looking AT ALL, he was attacked the most when the posters came out. Yang Yang is the look they wanted for Ye Hua. But Chao managed to turn the table around because of his acting, not his look. If he looks like that and only acted “OK”, I think he would have gotten a lot of hate mails and antifans by now.
And I think you’re obviously confusing popularity and quality. These two things are not in correlation. Marvel’s the Avengers is crazy popular, much much more popular than Bridge of Spies and earned a lot more money in box office, but does that mean Avengers is a better production than Bridge of Spies? Of course not. It’s more popular because of the audience demographic.
So if you’re going to base quality on which actress creates more “ships” in her dramas then I have nothing to say.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Just want to say, Huang Xuan got popular with Legend of Mi Yue, not The Interpreter. He got the People First Love title after that.
And he was the one who got recognised for his acting in Interpreter, not YM. He was the one who was nominated for awards, not YM.
The only thing YM bought was ATTENTION, which I’ll give her that.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

          @Brit
I think you’re right. Anything with Yang Mi’s name in it guarantees high viewership, that’s why unpopular actors with no fans love to work with her company, but the quality is another story. Sometimes it’s ok, sometimes it’s totally bad.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

          @kitai
Why wouldn’t you watch a production with Mark Chao in it?
He was a turn-off for me too but that was BEFORE I watched him act.
He has proved that he can act, hasn’t he? He’s not flowery beautiful like Yang Yang or something but he’s always been involved in production with good quality.
Maybe we’re just different, but if there’s a Yang Mi production versus… for example a Sun Li production or a Chen Jianbin production, I would never go for the Yang Mi production because the other 2 can guarantee quality while Yang Mi only brings in attention,

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Y’all crazy if you didn’t think Mark was a good actor. I’ve noticed him since he won Golden Bell in “Black & White” (the drama which starred Vic Zhou as lead and in which MZ won as a total newcomer.) Mark caught lots of flak for it because he didn’t have experience under his belt, but I sincerely thought he was great and the award was well-deserved. Sadly, this caused a rift between the two.

After that, he didn’t get lots of attention anymore (at least, not that I’m aware of.)

3L3W was great in that it proved, once again, how great of an actor Mark is. I admit, I wasn’t sure this role would fit him, but he was fantastic. However, without YM’s titular role & audience draw, Mark would probably still be in obscurity. So she’s great at establishing fanfare for her male leads, much like Joe Chen.

It’s not like her fellow popular actresses like Tiffany, Angelababy, Liu Shishi, Liu Yifei are any better…

I don’t think Angelababy is there with them yet (in term of acting).

I think A means popularity. AB, Yang Mi, Ni Ni and LSS are the New Four Dan actresses – a ranking I’ll never get why AB is part of.

On a side note, I’m excited for Ni Ni’s drama. She ought to be the best actress among these popular girls since she debuted in a Zhang Yimou movie.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

For acting, I do much prefer Bai Bai He for actresses of that generation. Tong Liya, Jiang Shuying can be good too but they don’t get lead roles much.
I hope Jin Chen’s popularity will rise higher still.

I think YM has improved, but I still like her acting better in her modern dramas. Her emotional scenes can be better. I’m more drawn into Jiao Jun Yan’s acting than YM’s in modern dramas.

But these actresses combined, don’t get nearly as many roles as either AngelaB or Zheng S. Sigh.

Many popular actresses all have large eyes, straight, narrow, tall nose & nose bridge. (And of course, super thin figure). All very pretty, but covers a very narrow range. The trend also increasingly favors the more Western look every decade. It’s one of the reasons why I favor JJY and BBH.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Bai Baihe definitely is very skilled – that’s why she is the box office queen (before her scandal).
Tong Liya and Jiang Shuying do get lead roles as well. Its just that they are cast in more “serious” and “proper” dramas which international fans do not really know of. TLY will act in the upcoming Nirvana drama, I’m excited to watch her there. As for JSY, she only started to get popular in 2013 so she’s already rising fast.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Janine Chang is often pretty good in dramas too. Haven’t seen her movies. JC has improved since the Tw drama Black & White. Ariel Lin is another one.

I just hope there is a more equitable use of actresses in C dramas, instead of seeing the first generation Tang Ren actresses in half the C dramas discussed in AVV. I guess Tang Ren Studio was extremely good at promoting TY, LSS, YM, (and LYF?) Good thing TRS didn’t go for AB and ZS.

There is too much of the same 5-6 actresses appearing over and over in too many dramas.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Lol the funny thing is LYF, YM and TY aren’t even part of Tangren. They managed to promote LSS’s competitors.
Haha AB is scouted by Yu Zheng and ZS by H&R Century and now Guo Jingming I guess.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

@a: JJY looks a little old for her age. BBH is overrated. Of course she’s alright, but she isn’t say a great actress or anything. Janine Chang is pretty bad though.

@A: Yeah, all of them were not contracted to Tang Ren except for LSS. They were considered outside help, and weren’t “promoted” by Tang Ren. TR did want to sign them all after they got popular, and I think things turned pretty sour for LYF and YM. Even TT is not on great terms with TR too.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

For some reason, JJY does look older than her age when they dress her up in Chusen. It is less obvious to me when she’s in modern dramas. Shu Chang also looks a bit older than her age in period dramas.

@kitai, did you say you like Zhu Yawen? His romcom drama with Wang Li Kun from earlier this year Across the Ocean … isn’t bad once you get past WLK’s in-laws. But WLK ‘s character is spoiled rotten at times. 2 supporting female characters are frustrating for a while. WLK did a decent job with acting here. There are a lot of “coincidences” in the plot.

J Chang was ok in some emotional scenes in that boring drama, .. Best of Time with Wallace Chung. I think no one’s acting looked that good in The Four, so it’s hard to judge. Hard to watch Empress Mary Sue aka Wu. JC doesn’t get so many roles.

Actually, actress Ma Su is not bad, but she doesn’t appear in the more idol etc. category. So I haven’t seen that much of her.

I don’t feel much watching TY, YM, LYF etc acting though they are ok. I warm up to relatively newer Gina Jin Chen better.

I do hope Tong LY gets more than a cameo in Nirvana2.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I’d place the blame on fans for making them so popular despite their lack of acting chops. Lack of demand for good acting from their worshipping fans allows them to coast thru without incentive for improvement. Their idol-like popularity pushes out the really serious actresses/actors for equal opportunities.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

The sad truth is that at the end of the day, a lady is judged more by her appearance more than her real skills by the general public. Face and figure trumps most other factors.

As long as you look certain ways, you can get a lot of fans. This is more apparent in the more look-oriented industries like showbiz.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

TY, YM, LSS LYF were also at the right place at the right time? They entered show biz and got attention back when showbiz wasn’t so competitive. And they had a lot of fans since then. And many fans stuck around throughout the years. ZS had the same experience with her Meteor Garden remake fans?

It’s harder for the younger TV actresses now. There are currently already so many TV actresses working in the biz.

So maybe it’s better to root for the newer actresses now. If they can do well in this environment, they would have to be realllly good. lol at my “logic”.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

AB stinks! Overrated & over-promoted. I don’t care if she’s beautiful inside & out; if she’s not convincing me as an actress, she needs to bounce off my screen.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I don’t think she is the best actress but IMO she is much better than people giving her credit for.
She lacks of depth but it’s not only her but generally most Chinese actresses.. They can’t show deep emotion. What I like about her is she doesn’t stay in her lane and try to have different roles…
Looking back at her projects she often plays 2,3 roles in them and often nailed it. How many actresses out there can do that? In EL, she actually played 5 roles all together… and acted them all different.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

She is a lil bit opposite of zly in that.Zly can act but she really do need help to choose her project. Even if zly have massive fan and her project always have good rattings but her recent projects is a bit of luckluster in terms of quality or script. While YM acting still need so many improvement atleast she is not that distracting to watch that you cant focus on the script.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

        I agree lol.
Zhu Xian, Best Get Going and Zu Mountain were horrible. Rookie Agent ROUGE is a spy drama so I understand its boring. And in Mystic Nine, she was just a supporting character.
JOF and PA are addictive, but not exactly the best quality dramas. Hopefully Minglan will be really good, since its from the NIF team and I trust them.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I Respectfully wholeheartedly DISAGREE She is wonderful her acting attracts me and many LOVE Yang Mi very Happy everything he touches turns to gold no matter how much haters she have.

  3. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Is her a production from her studio?

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

This isn’t produced by her studio if that was what you asked

  4. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

When is this airing? Why can’t Vengo ever be the main lead? T_T I definitely like him better than Ethan.
I’m a little upset that this is another fantasy drama, but at least storyline sounds quite interesting, was eternal love under her team/production? The pacing in there was not that great although it beats PA by super far, fantasy dramas tend to be very slow in pace usually so I’ll hope this one isn’t like that.

YM’s forehead was not an issue but it was loss of hair in eternal love that was very very noticeable, not a problem but just a little bit distracting, only one more inch away then it could look like a manchurian man so I believe she had to use quite some hair to cover up. I’m glad she use them, I don’t see anything wrong with that, it’s so stupid if people get angry or hate anyone for a natural cause like going bald.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Eternal Love was under her studio production

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I think it is? Seeing how Vengo and Lai Yi are in this as well.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

LOL Vengo can’t act… Why would he be a main lead when her company try to package him everywhere with YM to get him popular. Whether you like Ethan or not, he is a Golden Horse Award winner who is Vengo and what has he done besides being package with YM everywhere?

Her hair/forehead has always been like that… I don’t know what are you talking about… Maybe you should go back and rewatch her Palace t see. People love to pick on her, about everything… But who cares? She is still killing it on movies and dramas. When will their favorites?

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

LOL I’d love to see you acting to think others can’t act! Just bc somebody got a golden horse award doesn’t mean they are better, many people know YM is great but did she get to be golden eagle princess? Well, please understand that she doesn’t need it to prove that she’s great.

Um…I didn’t not say about her forehead growing/changing, please re-read since you didn’t see, I say only loss of hair. I do not think you noticed that she got hair loss, but that’s good though it means that didn’t bother you, my eyes are too great and got distracted by it.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Golden eagle goddess is based on popularity. Except in 2016 where they ignored fan votes and chose Tang Yan because of her drama streak.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Vengo Gao seriously can’t act. I don’t think Ethan Ruan is a great actor, but he has to be better than Vengo or he’d be terrible.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I love the way Yang Mi looks, she’s very unique and I don’t even think she got plastic surgery, she looks pretty natural.
But if you want to convince people to respect Yang Mi, maybe don’t mention she was in Palace…
And… She’s not killing anything, her partners and supporting actors are the ones who do the killing.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

First of all, I will say that I love the way Yang Mi looks. In fact, I don’t even think she got plastic surgery, she looks so naturally beautiful.
Secondly, Yang Mi is not killing anything, it’s her partners and the supporting actors who are doing the killing in her dramas.
What Yang Mi does best is choosing good projects and assembling great teams of production, but acting skill is not what I would point too if I was making a list of her talents.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I agree, I personally never had a problem with Yang Mi’s styling in Eternal Love. It’s not perfect but that’s exactly why it’s unique. I don’t like female characters with makeup and styling that make them look too glamorous to the point that it’s unreal.

  5. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

YM and Ethan look really good tgt in the stills! Hopefully the CGI for this drama isn’t bad.

Wait, is that the scriptwriter for the Hua Xu Yin drama? Oh no. That doesn’t sound good.

  6. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

2017 is such a good year for Yang Mi. She is doing good in both movie and drama.

  7. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Agree with the comments here. YM’s acting ain’t that great but she is ambitious and great at choosing hit dramas/movies. Loved her lesser known works – Ruyi, A Clear Midsummer Night, and her supporting role in Schemes of a Beauty (all flawed but entertaining dramas).

Not sure about the quality of this drama but I predict that it’ll do well ratings-wise and raise Ethan Ruan’s popularity like it did for Mark Chao.

  8. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Hopefully, Yang Mi can continuously kill all the dramas that she is in that she gets the chance to become the Golden Eagle goddess (which is what I had long thought she deserves with all of those dramas and movies that she had been doing. And don’t even say she doesn’t deserve it when Tang Yan, Liu Yi Fei, Zhao Li Ying and Liu Shi Shi got one).
I had always been particularly fond of her so it’s nice that she’s gaining fans (or getting fans out of their shell to defend her or at least acknowledging her since before Peach Blossom so many hate were thrown at her for not being pretty enough and such and not many seem to defend her but rather agree with what the haters said).
Other than those ranting, I want to say, I’m excited about this drama although 60 episodes are still very long in my eyes (took me a lot of tries to finish Peach Blossom. I started from episode one then quit, went to episode 11 and then stop around the 50s, give it one more push and finish the episodes then went back to the beginning to watch it all over again from beginning to end . . . sorry for the rant here). I’m also happy that the color palette doesn’t seem so bright. The picture stills of Yang Mi are very pretty too.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Nobody said she wasn’t pretty tho? They just said she wasn’t as pretty as Liu Yifei… who is pretty much incomparable in ancient garb.
I think she will most likely get it? There really isn’t anyone to compete with her now that ZLY, LSS & TY has gotten it. I can only think of Zheng Shuang, but someone said they aren’t deciding based on fan votes anymore.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I guess I should clarify myself. When I said that people stated she wasn’t pretty I wasn’t talking about her not being pretty enough to play Bai Qian but in general. After the success of Peach Blossom many seem to start praising her. I like Liu Yi Fei and I do agree that Liu Yi Fei is pretty in traditional clothing, but I was not trying to say that people compared Yang Mi and Liu Yi Fei on playing Bai Qian and choosing Liu Yi Fei over Yang Mi because she has a more ethereal look in traditional clothing. Whether it is Liu Yi Fei or Yang Mi I don’t mind who play Bai Qian much.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

So… “not many seem to defend her but rather agree with what the haters said”? Okay, this may seem like a silly question but… doesn’t it mean there’s some truth in what the haters said, despite the hate?
idk… I’m neutral here, I don’t like or hate Yang Mi but I thought I needed to point that out LOL.

  9. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I’m so excited for this! I love love the new costume style for her, much darker and mature. It’ll be interesting to see how the story plays out. I’m most likely bias because I loved her in 3l3w, but I do believe she knows how to do fantasy historical dramas. This is def gonna be another crack for me.

  10. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Honestly Yang Mi get hates for everything. Like give this girl a break. She always work hard on everything but people just can’t appreciate it. People say that her acting is bad but please there are actresses who can’t even act at all. She’s pretty decent/good. Good luck to her and I hope that she will continues to slay so those haters can shut up already.

  11. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Yang Mi isn’t a great actress but she’s passable. She’s better than Liu Yifei and I love that girl.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Well LYF is bad though so its not like better than her is a great accomplishment.

  12. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

These stills look AMAZING so far, I’m super hyped for this one. While I really enjoyed Eternal Love, that was mostly all romance (and to be honest too much romance tends to bore me). I prefer more fighting and politics in dramas! XD Hopefully this one is going to be a great mix of fighting, action, politics, fantasy, and romance. Another bonus is I think the writer of this novel has a good reputation (unlike the author of Eternal Love with the huge plagiarism controversy). So far the hairstyling, costumes, and settings look gorgeous as well!

Regarding YM’s acting: I’ve followed her since I saw her in Xian Qian (back in 2006) and while I did prefer her acting as a fresh newbie (I was so impressed by her potential when she first started out), I still think she is one of the best post-1985 actresses in China. There’s been too much exaggerated criticism of the poor girl since Palace (but that’s what always happens to the super popular actresses in China I guess). Sure there is room for improvement but overall, I always love watching her onscreen.

Even if people have issue with her acting though, there is just no denying that she is one of the best actresses at generating incredible onscreen chemistry with her costars. I can’t think of another actress or actor that has created so many “crazy popular” drama ships, with audiences being completely invested in her onscreen pairing. From Hu Ge to Feng Shaofeng to Li Yifeng to Mark Chao, it’s impressive how deep of a lasting impression her pairings have left (there are still tons of fans who swoon in nostalgia when YM takes a picture with Hu Ge or FSF, and those pairings happened YEARS ago, lol). That in itself shows that she does have acting chops (enough to make people totally engrossed in her character), because I’ve definitely seen my share of bad actresses where I just could not get into their relationship onscreen (due to how boring and uninspired their acting was)…

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

*typo, that should read “Xiao Qian” (from Liao Zhai with Hu Ge) in 2006

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I’ve been following Yang Mi too since 2006, in Condor Heroes or whatever, she was great there. Later on, I don’t know…, I think she kind of stays the same with her acting skill. It’s not terrible but it’s pretty dull. I mean I love to look at her on screen, but I can’t watch her for too long.
I don’t think the main reason people criticize Yang Mi’s acting is because she’s popular. Actresses like Zhou Xun, Zhang Ziyi got into scandals a lot of times and were bullied online, but people hardly criticize their acting, because they actually are good actress. People just say they have a messy personal life.

  13. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I Absolutely cannot wait I LOVE YANG MI and so many of us do it is so funny how people support all of her projects just to criticize her and she ALWAYS Comes out on Top as the saying goes if you have no haters you are doing something right look at all of these comments just to shade Yang Mi. Go Yang Mi this only proves you are winning

  14. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I don’t have great things to say about YM’s acting, but I’m not bothered as long as she’s dubbed, because her voice is the main thing I dislike. I do think that she deserves full credit for making her dramas hits, and regardless of how little she has to contribute on the acting front, she alone makes the ratings work, not her partners.

I think so much hate is directed toward her solely because she’s had another peak with Eternal Love, and with this much popularity there’s bound to be people who feel that it is all undeserved. Or perhaps fans of her costars thinking they are not getting enough credit for supposedly doing the heavy-lifting. But honestly, most male actors will beg for an opportunity to act opposite her. She’s really the perfect partner for an actor who’s lacking in popularity to gain fans. To be brutally truthful, the reason why people like MC and ER are taking supporting lead roles in female centric dramas is because they have virtually zero appeal to the Mainland audience and they need a pull from YM (or any of the other girls). This is also the reason why people like LGX and SD are acting in PA despite LGX being a leading man in film already; they are essentially riding on ZLY’s coat-tails.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I totally agree with this statement: “She’s really the perfect partner for an actor who’s lacking in popularity to gain fans.” Thumbs up.
This reminds me, has Yang Mi ever acted in a series with established actors who are already famous among their own fans (who ‘s not there because they need more fans)? Like Lu Yi, Chen Kun, Zhang Hanyu, or takeshi kaneshiro…
I’d appreciate any suggestion. I would love to watch something like that.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I think you’ll have to go back to 2009 for that LOL. All her recent co-stars were unknown or lacking in popularity actors before they acted with her – like feng shaofeng, hawick lau, li yifeng, huang xuan, mark chao, ethan juan.

I’m curious who her male lead for her modern drama will be (hoping it won’t be vengo lol).

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Yang Mi’s riding high. Following the big hit Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, she’s in the new film ‘Brotherhood of Blades’ which is currently #1 at the box office. Will lead Taiwan actor Chang Chen will be the next to gain greater popularity with the YM effect? Production values are stunning for this film and critics gave it high marks as well.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Nah, she doesn’t have the same power in film. Chang Chen doesn’t seem like someone who needs fans anyway. Certain actors are desperate for fame even though they are critically acclaimed (e.g. Huang Xuan), whereas other actors really just act. I think CC is a favourite of a couple of directors, and he has an impressive filmography which means that he most likely won’t need to worry about work. It’s extremely unlikely that he ventures into television at all.

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Brotherhood of Blades have always done well. The first one received alot of praise as well, so no Yang Mi doesn’t have anything to do with it.
Instead of YM giving leverage to CC, it would be the other way round.
Films don’t really rely on fandom or popularity to do well.

Besides, isn’t CC rumored to be in Emperor Conquest with ZZY?

        • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Yes, he is. I forgot about that totally.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Haha! I thought it was just me. I saw her on RMC and I was shocked by her real voice. It’s very babyish.

  15. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

The hate for YM is probably because she’s been acting for a while, but the results are not reflective of that. Nevertheless, she’s a very good business woman. She draws attention, which help her partners and productions.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Are there really people who hate her? I thought they’re mostly just disappointed and annoyed.
I mean why bother hating someone you don’t even know personally?

  16. 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

Why are we always so keen on criticizing Yang Mi’s acting, compared to popular actresses of her generation, Tang Yan, Liu Shishi, Liu Yifei, Zheng Shuang, who are objectively worse than hers? Nobody was implying it was an achievement that she was better, but you have actresses having worse acting but do not get as much flack which is unfairly bizarre.
However, this raises a bigger question. Why do we look for ACTING at a higher standard when watching these cdramas that all fall under IDOL DRAMA, as much as any of you would refuse to admit? Why make it hard to yourself to FIND greater acting in shallow, fandom-targeted, visuals-like dramas? When has it ever been about the technicalities when they’re merely there to satisfy your entertainment and enjoyment? This is nothing different from trying to find operatic and classically trained vocals in mainstream music. They’re all manufactured at lower standards to satisfy fangirls and shippers. However, it is nice that some people value great acting whilst watching something. In that case, cdramas are not really the material that you should go for.

    • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

I will have to disagree with you about IDOL DRAMA here. Yes, many of these dramas are idol dramas, but that doesn’t mean we can’t require good acting.
Good acting means MAKING PEOPLE BELIEVE WHAT YOU’RE DOING IS REAL. And that has nothing to do with if the drama is shallow or not. Yang Mi is criticized because her acting is plain and mediocre in everything she’s in. What she does best is LOOKING sassy and inspirational, but the moment she starts reading a line or using her face to express her character, it’s blank. I don’t see Bai Qian, Qing Chuan (Palace), Qiao Fei (Interpreter), I only see Yang Mi.
In Eternal Love, when Bai Qian is in love with Ye Hua, I didn’t see it, I only saw a Yang Mi acting like she’s in love with Mark Chao. That’s the problem.
So whatever drama it is, bad script or good script, if the actors can make people believe, then he/she is a good actor even if the drama’s crap. The writing and directing of Princess Agents is horrible, but that doesn’t mean Zhao Liying is a bad actress because whatever she does, even if it pisses us off, she makes us believes it.

      • 95 thoughts on “Yang Mi’s Legend of Fu Yao releases first set of Character Stills

And nowhere did I say or imply that you can’t require good acting. I’m talking about asking for acting at a higher scale in idol dramas, which is rather funny. Any aspect of an idol drama will have a lesser quality and we all know it, yet we’re all drawn to it…so why is requiring great acting in a cheap production so important? You’re drawn to idol dramas, meaning that you’re perfectly fine with the low standards this drama has to offer, yet suddenly when it’s about acting, you WANT it exclusively to be at a higher standards in which Yang Mi’s acting does not fall within. Hardly anything coming out of an idol drama is real and we all don’t bother for it to make us believe to its realness, yet when it comes to acting, tables are turned and high standards must be reached. Bizarre, isn’t it?
It’s interesting that you only see Yang Mi in her roles. I mean, I hardly see any Qing Chuan or Bai Qian in Yang Mi in real life, which would be funny if I did, because she would have been an annoying celebrity in real life if that was the case. Qiao Fei is the closest one to Yang Mi, personality wise. I mean, I personally would not think just by comparing the way she’d portray those 3 roles that they’d all remind me of each other, but it’s interesting that you see different.
Again, you’re completely missing my point. I’m not saying that there’s a correlation between drama production and acting. I merely think that there’s no need to require high standards acting when it comes to idol dramas when we’re all drawn to those, by accepting the lack of high standards for many aspects of the production, which includes acting level, because hey, why only make acting exclusive and expect so much, yet giving other aspects of a production a pass by tolerating their mediocrity? Also, you still haven’t properly answered my first question about the reason why people are ONLY giving Yang Mi’s acting flack, but not other popular actresses of her generation with objectively worse acting skills.

I honestly don’t get what you mean when you say “Hardly anything coming out of an idol drama is real”…, regardless of what the action is, the actor’s job is to make it look real, whether it is falling in love, worrying about someone, hating someone, hit someone with a magic wand, posseing someone’s mind, having a crush on a god, etc.
If the viewers don’t believe what you’re doing then it’s not good acting.

I’m not asking for a Meryl Streep or an Al Pacino in what you label as an “idol drama”, but I want to at least be able to believe what the actors are doing. When a characters in love, I want to believe she’s in love.
When Ruoxi (scarlet heart) cries about her miscarriage, I believed it. When Bai Zi Hua laments Hua Qian Gu’s death, I believed it, etc. and I have never been able to believe anything Yang Mi’s done even something as simple as “being embarrassed for having a crush on someone”.

That’s why I can’t say if I like her or hate her, I’m just generally unresponsive towards anything she does in a drama.

And to be clear, I didn’t mean that I see Yang Mi’s personality in Qing Chuan, Qiao Fei, and Bai Qian, but because she’s too conscious about her acting, whatever character she’s in, I only see a Yang Mi trying hard to act like the character, I don’t see the character itself.

And I never said I exclusively ask for superb acting while overlooking other aspect, I’ve never forgiven bad storylines or bad directing or cheap costumes either, especially bad storylines

I didn’t think it was my job to address all of your questions, but since you specifically asked about why Yang Mi is being criticized for her acting and not the other actresses of her generation, I think someone here already mentioned that Yang Mi has been in the industry for a long time and her acting is not a reflection of her experience so she is criticized, and I agree with that.

“she’s too conscious about her acting” that is a problem with almost every single leading actress right now including LSS, TY, and ZLY although she really got too many fans to protect her about that, it also doesn’t convince me that she’s any better just because so many people are saying that she is better, those are only what her fans feel, the honest truth l see is all these actresses’ acting are so close on the same level, too close to mention any difference between them.

Although I do doubt all of us if we were also the ones being too “conscious” and too wary of them knowing they are acting, so in turn we call them out for performing conscious acting, but this conscious and extreme-careful acting thing has been bothering me in every dramas lately too. The only way to help get rid of it is through providing good storyline and scriptings.

@cyndi, i understand what you’re saying. But strategically thinking, i think that may be like opening the flood gate. When the producers or actors start thinking that way, there are no reasons why scriptwriters can’t go down the same path. It’s ok to recycle Grandma Qiong Yao’s classic brand of family melodrama. It’s only for idol drama. Before you know it, the cinematographers and every one else thinks they don’t need to work so hard too bc the acting etc aren’t so great anyway. Why do your best cinematography or costume or music to accompany idol acting.

Plus one has to stay competitive. If non C countries can make idol dramas much better, the general C ent reputation can be affected. Some C drama actors show up in C films. C ent seems interested in selling C films into the international market. Having a reputation for making mediocre C dramas will not help them sell movie tix.

Although there are 40 something actors like Ruby Lin, W Chung that still often lead dramas. A few others like Alec Su (also Nicky Wu?) are moving to the more behind-the-scenes work. Older TVB actors take on more parental and other roles in dramas. You can’t be an idol actor forever. So TY, YM etc should consider this point too. It’s not too many years until they reach 40. Having top notch acting skills leave you with more options.

Plus TY etc have a lot of loyal fans. Perhaps their fans will mostly watch whatever they make. But it’s gracious and generous to give your best acting for your fans.

To me, it’s generally not a good idea to justify a poorer performance. I understand sometimes one has limited opportunities and resources and unable to pick and choose (say, movie options) carefully.

I thought most actresses who are in a lot of dramas get some level of criticisms. I never do fact checking for C ent, so idk if YM really gets more flak than others. Do fans tally up criticisms these days? This just reminded me of the Lang Ya ranking of Nirvana.

It seems difficult to say with any certainly which actor gets the most flak at the end. Or how one gets the highest number of them. I never devote time to do any fact checking myself. It’s only entertainment after all.

Anyway. I hope you enjoy your dramas.
