Fluffy romance in Attention Love with Joanne Tseng and Wang Zi

How’s Taiwanese dramaland doing these days? Any good ones? The upcoming modern youth drama, Attention Love (稍息立正我爱你) reunites Ti Amo Chocolate‘s costars Joanne Tseng and Wang Zi as the main OTP. They were betrothed to each other as babies and Wang Zi plays a broody boy returning back to Taiwan after living in Japan. With his father’s death, he goes and lives with Joanne’s family and attends the same high school as her. She’s a somewhat of a badass leader at school, known affectionately as Zhong Ge (Zhong big brother). Second lead couple goes to Spexial’s Riley Wang Yi Lun (Long For You) and Guo Shu Yao (The Teenage Pyschic). I haven’t seen much of the leads’ acting to give a statement but the trailer looks quite cute and harmless.

Joanne Tseng. I thought she was older but they are the same age, with him being a few months older. Both are 28! Now playing high schoolers…. Lol.

I say Joanne is decent. It’s mostly her characters that get annoying or she gets typecast with not-so-bright female characters or ones who are childish. Joanne does look older. I think she fits more mature roles than high school roles. The second couple fits the hs setting. I wish they had went with a college setting. Also based on the cast picture, I recognize the lady next to Joanne, Carolyn Chen/ Chen Pei Qi. She used to star in so many dramatic Taiwanese shows lol The ones my mom love to watch such as Wives.
Wang Zi didn’t leave an impression on me in Ti Amo Chocolate LOL

OVERAGE! Also, the male lead looks like a poor man’s Aaron Yan. Tbh, I’m not sure whether TW dramas get any audience outside of their own shores anymore. The big name actors are gone, and new ones don’t seem to be stepping up. I get turned off by either the synopsis, the cast, or the way some of the newer actresses speak their lines (act cute-ish). I really think that TW dramas are in permanent decline, very much like HK dramas. I sure people now would rather watch Chinese dramas with prettier casts, better acting, more glamourous sets, and beefier plots.

Yeah I think the last Twdrama that got international attention was Marry Me or Not, coincidentally Joanne Tseng was also in that show.

The “newest” TW drama I remember is In Time with You which aired 6 years ago. LOL.

          So brutal! LOL.

I feel the same way but TW was on the decline before that.

Pretty much when all the 90s and early 00s crew moved on the industry saw a steep decline.

Chinese drama aren’t that much better, neither are the newer generations of actors/actress. Only a handful can actually act. But there is more to choose from and it airs super fast.

I still see some glimmering hope with TVB. They have a hit at least twice a year; can’t say the same for TW dramas. They produced and are airing “Legal Mavericks” now which is amazing. I hear “Tiger Mom Blues” was also very well-received. Even “My Unfair Lady” is somewhat breaking new grounds. So they are keeping up with the trends and not trying to be left behind.

TW dramas…I can’t remember watching the last drama that held my attention from beginning to end. Most of them are very immature and idol-centric, and repackages old formulas that rarely change.

Chinese dramas, while much prettier and holding much more sophisticated casting/script, are somewhat in the same boat as HK dramas, IMO. They have the budget, but they tend to stretch out everything without any coherency or meaning. And they also follow formulas. Still, they have at least one to two hits every year, if not more.

I think Tiger Mom Blues was a surprising hit. It was never going to be popular outside of HK though, it’s somewhat like The Family Link as opposed to War and Beauty. My Unfair Lady is interesting in that it has a strong cast and uses more modern filming techniques and all, but with its negative bent against Mainland woman it was never going to find favour with the Mainland Chinese audience. I’ve heard about Legal Mavericks but I wasn’t looking forward to it because there’s Sisley Choi in the cast, which brings me to the biggest problem in TVB…

The gap between the aging and upcoming actors. TVB are forced to find those who have left/outside help to try to lift their productions (Jessica Hsuan, Dicky Cheung, Anthony Wong, Annie Liu). The only youngish leading man are Ruco Chan and Vincent Wong. On the ladies side, the only person they have is really Nancy Wu. When you are pairing up DC with SC and Gallen Lo with Ari (?) as romantic interests, surely there’s something terribly wrong. People like NW and Natalie Tong should have been supported much earlier but they are only getting lead roles now in their mid-30s; other fadans in the same generation have risen to the top and are already gone. And they are still trying to push people like Priscilla Wong (in her mid-30s as well) into the forefront. Then you also have pageant beauties who act like crap hogging all the dramas too. Just freaking nonsensical. I mean, can’t they devote their resources to people who actually have potential?

The best thing about the C entertainment industry (though sad as well) is that there is no shortage of actors to replace the current ones. They churn them out of all the acting schools. Even if they are not great, they are still pretty decent. TVB has Ms. HK as well but they aren’t properly trained and general quality of the contestants is plummeting (according to HK media). TW, unfortunately, has nothing.

Omg, I read up to that part about you missing out on Legal Mavericks and I HAD to comment. Actually, the interesting thing is, Legal Mavericks is a co-production between Mainland & HK (and TVB is focusing their markets on cooperating with Mainland to produce TV shows. While I had my own reservations about that, it’s not turning out too bad right now.) With that aside, please, please, PLEASE don’t let Sisley Choi stop you from watching this – there is major improvement from her initial roles. If not for her, at least watch for the rest of the crew – Vincent was an excellent selection for the main lead in this drama and the rest of the cast have great chemistry. In fact, this drama has been well received in China as well.

I agree with you regarding the increasing age gaps between the newbies and the veterans of the industry. It doesn’t seem like TVB has opened their training programs for people interested in acting (but they must have, otherwise where do some of the newbies come from?). I think they’re just extra choosy and only open to a selected few (mainly Mr. & Ms. HK), but don’t give them proper promotion to outclass the current grade of established actresses/actors. This, along with abusing popular actors/actresses, throttles any potential break-out actors from the newer class.

I hope that with more established cooperation with China, it’ll mean more resources to do that…but I highly doubt it.

Joanne needs to take a powerful mature character. She’s a good actress actually, but she seems to stick with idol dramas nowadays. I really enjoyed watching her in refresh man, but her in hs was a no no. She’s pretty but not a baby face.

One episode or two wont hurt. Currenty trying to finish The Perfect Match, also a TWdrama but seriously it always happened in tw dramas, the story got confusing and boring nearly ending. Why oh why.

Hopefully, we’ll see them in adult story too. Dont gimme an ending like The Heirs lols

Ooo I remember Wang Zi back from MFBBT. Oh gosh that was when I was in high school =O

Don’t follow TW dramas much nowadays but can recommend the Q Series! There’s 8(?) different mini-series to check out. I’ve watched Close Your Eyes Before It’s Dark, Love Of A Sandstorm, Miss Jiang Have You Ever Loved?, and House of Bricks. These mini-series feature 24 newbie actors/actresses (think they were selected through online voting, plz correct me if I’m wrong). Everyone gets a chance to shine cos if they have a meatier role in one drama, then the next one they’ll have a smaller role in the or not be in it at all. Great idea to promote the next gen!

Lol I could probably write a whole essay on the decline of HK television and basically the HK entertainment industry in general…

Aside from the lovely Tiger Mum Blues, TVB dramas have been mediocre and outdated.

Hye.. i from Malaysia. Excually i’m big fan of Taiwan drama beside KDrama and CDrama. Love this drama… love the ending song sang by Joanne. But TW drama too long to wait and only 1 episode per week. I’m dead.. normally after TWDrama finish then i start to watch it.

The drama is actually not bad. Light hearted and Joanne portray her character pretty well. It reminded me about “It started with a kiss” and “Strobe Edge”. So far I like it pretty much. Hopefully, it will go on and end well 😛

What do you think?
