Chen Kun and Ni Ni’s The Rise of Phoenixes releases First Stills

The pretty is here~! The pretty is here! But we don’t get to see Ni Ni’s full blown gown because she’s cross-dressing as a male in this first batch of stills with a very interested Chen Kun seeking her out from the crowd. Heh. Upcoming period drama, The Rise of Phoenixes (凰权弈天下) is based on the novel Huang Quan written by Tian Xia Gui Yuan (pen name). Our male lead is a scheming sixth prince Ning Yi (Chen Kun). Female lead, Feng Zhi Wei (Ni Ni), is an illegitimate daughter of a kingdom who is later framed for a crime and evicted, which leads to her cross-dressing into a famous academy and shines with her keen intelligence. She then seeks vengeance against those who wronged her. This sounds pretty awesome based on the reviews and it’s nice to have our both of our leads as smart and cunning people, sometimes cruel in order to obtain what they want.

First Stills:

Chen Kun. I’m so used to his playful tactics on variety shows, it’s hard to not laugh when I see his serious face. Lol. He must be a riot BTS!

It is directed by close acquaintances Shen Yan and Liu Hai Bo, who have worked together numerous times before, including Through The Mystery and Chinese Style Relationship. Participating in the script includes novel author Tian Xia Gui Yuan, Zou Yue (Beauty at the Crossfires), and Wang Pei. The Rise of Phoenixes plans to have 70 episodes. GAH.

I like the colours. Honestly, I’m tired of all the bright and pastel colours they are using. When I see a drama with a darker palette, I just think that it’s going to be good. Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of Chen Kun and Ni Ni. If they went with Tong Li Ya instead I’ll probably be more interested.

Excited for this pairing. Both are solid actors with good looks to boot.

Both Ni Ni and Chen Kun have always had strong presence in photo shoots, so I’m not surprised their drama pics are amazing. I just hope their acting would do the pics justice.

The moment I saw the stills, the first thing that came to my mind is “I love the colours of the set and costume”, and there the first comment already had the exact same thought! Guess many of us were overwhelmed by the bright pastel colours of PA haha!

I am really liking the set already, suits the theme of the drama. Cross my fingers for our female lead to NOT go down the damsel in distress/Mary Sue route, contrary to what is written in the synopsis.

The back view of NiNi looks gorgeous already~ *swoon*

So excited for this drama, can’t wait to see Chen Kun, and agree with all of you, the dark palette is refreshing and make the vibe more grand somohow, Love Ni Ni outfit, but I dunno how the hairstyle gonna look like upfront.

This looks gorgeous. I love the colours of the set and costumes. I hope we get to see Ni Ni in some beautiful costumes too. Don’t want to see her beauty to be wasted in boring men’s clothing. I’m thinking of Korean drama Moonlight Drawn By Clouds where beautiful Kim Yoo Jung spent nearly the whole drama crossdressing as a eunuch. I was so sick of that green eunuch costume by the end!

What do you think?
