Synopsis: The story takes place during the chaotic times of Western Wei, where citizens are often kidnapped and turned into slaves. Slave girl, Chu Qiao (Zhao Li Ying) is thrown into a forest along with other slaves and becomes the next hunting target for the rich lords. She’s saved by the Prince of Northern Wei, Yan Xun (Shawn Dou). Afterwards, she’s sold into the house of Yu Wen and witnesses the deaths of her siblings. Not accepting her fate, Chu Qiao escapes the dungeon with her younger sister and catches the attention of Yu Wen Yue (Lin Geng Xin), who was also in charge of taking the lives of some of her family members (dang…). He takes care of her and trains her in various things while she develops a deep friendship with Yan Xun over the course of 10 years. During the battle with Western Wei, Yan Xun loses his whole family and Chu Qiao is willing to die to save him and send him back to his court. However, after that incident, Yan Xun grows ambitious and cruel to avenge for the things and the people he lost. He doubts Chu Qiao and takes advantage of her loyalty and love many times before she finally explodes. Disappointed with the man she once loved, Chu Qiao works with Yu Wen Yue to bring Yan Xun down and end slavery, becoming a successful military strategist/female general in the people’s hearts. Kappy: I think in terms of story and acting, I like it, but the technical aspects leave much to be desired. If the director for Tribes and Empire or Nirvana In Fire did this one, the tone would have been significantly different but in a good way. Ultimately, it is filmed like an idol drama so the bright scenery and perky songs make the whole subject of slavery less intense and tragic. The wolf-hunting scene in episode 1 should’ve been darker and grittier. Overall, I am entertained and still very hyped to follow the story to its juicy parts. =D

    I’ve watched until ep 8 and i dont like the synopsis telling that she’ll love 2nd lead first than yuwen yue. I ship them already, chu qian and yuwen yue.

    How come she loves another man?? Huaaa.. I just hope she wont betray her master. I cant accept it lols
    I am so into this drama. I like the acting and chemistry but yes, the colorful cinematography is kinda disturbing me. But well, i still like it.

      Yan Xun is not second lead in the book. Both men are important, equally. As a matter of fact, the novel was known for a time as second lead getting the girl (Yuwen Yue), like a rare Kdrama reversal. However, the drama is portraying Yuwen Yue as the sole male lead because Lin Geng Xin’s the bigger star in dramaland, compared to Shawn Dou.

      The drama also definitely added a lot of moments for Yuwen Yue and Chu Qiao, so hence the shipping already. But in the novel, she only started to sway in the late latter half of the novel when Yan Xun slowly uses her after turning dark.

      I would also like to point out that I love, love, love the fact that she changes her heart when the man she loves doesn’t live up to her loyalty and faith. It’s growth and realization = character development. Some dramas have this crazy obsession with the lead ever only loving one person, no matter what. It’s unrealistic in real life.

        I think a lot of it is to build more good feelings for Yuwen Yue so that shippers will ship the right pair.

        In the novel, Chu Qiao mentions that she doesn’t know when she started to love YWY, and it could have been a long long time ago. In real life it’s possible to have fond feelings for more than one person as well. A lot of times love is a matter of choice. She chose Yan Xun at the start because she thought that their ideals were aligned and because of the circumstances they’d been through together, and their relationship developed because of her choice. Imo, it’s not that she loved him more. She stuck with him even after cracks appeared in their relationship because of loyalty and faith, not just love. She only really left after she saw that there was no way to salvage a relationship without trust, and I don’t think at that point that she loved YWY more than YX too. It’s just a combination of a lot of different factors.

        The problem with doing this is you risk losing readers/viewers. This is why I say that it’s to build more support behind the final OTP. Without the changes, I’m guessing a lot of people may prefer CQ as a couple with YX instead. I appreciate the realism, but I can also see how if you are a viewer/reader you’ll feel frustrated not knowing who to stand behind. Look at Reply 1988, they threw so many red herrings and showed great chemistry between the female lead and the 2nd (?) male lead, that’s why they got so much backlash when the endgame wasn’t what people imagined. Princess Agents is just straight out telling us that she’s going to end up with YWY.

          Lovely analysis there kitai. The drama could go the trajectory of building goodwill between the two guys which often many dramas do so much and so well, but thank goodness for people that they know YWY is the final ship. Seen so many viewers and novel readers wait out a drama to get on the right ship. Much agreement with Reply 1988, the comment section for that exploded. It was obvious the writer was going for the main rough type of male for the female with many hints in the beginning but ended up with the more ‘softer’ type of male seen as 2nd leads. A lot of readers felt the writer ‘cop out’ to be more ‘unpredictable’. It’s better to give hints to readers/viewers from the start on the ship the drama intended to do and not pull out something different in the later half. Of course, if the drama wanted to be faithful to the novel, viewers/readers would be able to tell. It’s a bit too early to conclude 100% for PA on whether they will stay faithful to the novel in the love development (going that direction that BBJX went) but it’s clear one male is more likely to be with CQ.

          I understand they want viewers to ship the right final pair, but in this case, the other factor is star power as well. If the two male leads have equal star power, the dynamics would be more balanced, instead of one pair having way more screen time and moments than the other. And when they do this, I feel it’s a dis-service to the other male character.

          I definitely don’t see Chu Qiao with feelings for Yue until later because he does nothing like what he did in the drama. He’s softened here, for reasons you have stated.

          As a viewer, I just ship whichever pair that I like the most, sometimes that could be two ships (most of the time!) and heartbreak later… Having a clear-cut OTP makes the process less fun for me. Heh.

          Reply 1988 was a huge mess because it was clearly a cop-out decision. Chu Qiao knows her heart and her faith, hence I believe and trust her choice, beginning to end.

          Thanks for the insights. so its a foregone conclusion that she will end up with YWY. I agree if its not done right it causes confusion n even distaste. I got a lil confuse with Princess of Lanling. n although she clearly had better chemistry with one than the other- i felt the direction n story could have been done bettwe. Reply 1988 started off really well n i thk pressure (scrutiny n overwhelming interest + high ratings) got to the director n writer. I am still angry they sank my ship there.

        Same! Chu Qiao is such a strong character that she wouldn’t and shouldn’t conform her beliefs for love. Esp when the man that she loves undergo a 180 change like that.

        Yan Xun definitely had more scenes than this in the book. I think they tried too hard to push the final pair by giving YWY too much credits for all the time that he saved Chu Qiao when in actuality, it should be Yan Xun who saved her. Not sure how they’re gonna turn around and make viewers believe that she fell for Yan Xun with how the drama is heading.
        Wish they hadn’t soften Chu Qiao here also. So far she’s been more reactive than proactive. With Song daniang and Jin Zhu, they made it seems like situations forced her to take actions whereas in the book, she was paying back to all the misdeeds they did toward her and her family.

          Since this drama is pushing us toward Team YueXing, I feel that XingEr will develop a special feeling/bond with YWY that made her unable to kill him not bcoz lack of skill. From some snips of clips here and there, it’s seem like she will have a lot of opportunities to kill him but hold back.

          The video above also show that she was staring at the wound with concern. The scene before that was Yue asks her if she can kill him and she challenge him by let’s try and see (roughly translated..hehe)

          From my personal bias opinion, YWY himself is also a “slave” bcoz his life was forced upon him by his grandpa(something related to Eye of God). He told YX that he has no choices in his life including choices in women. Also he had a conversation with a wooden bird that he kept in the box says he envy his brother that live in JiangHu whom can do whatever he want. That is why XingEr caught his attention bcoz even though she is a lowliest slave but she fight back. Something that he is unable to do.

    Is anyone experiencing this? some of the replies are just 1 letter per line, it’s very difficult to read them…

    Does anyone have dibs on CQ’s background? I know she’s supposed to end up with Shaw Duo’s character 1st then Yuwen Yue….don’t know how’s that going to work out…don’t like Shawn’s happy go lucky
    character now…no idea how going ‘evil power hungry’ is going to make her like him. Anyone want to spoil the story for me?

      Like it says, they’re supposed to go through 10 years together, in which CQ is supposed to soften up and begin to have feelings for him, and he’s supposed to mature (but it’s a drama we’re talking about so it’ll probably be cut out) and then theres this plan thing that ends up killing Shawn’s entire family, and CQ risks her life and saves him, but they end up in prison, I think? Afterwards, CQ and YanXun try to bring YanXun back to power, and they are like together and stuff, but he becomes power hungry and she leaves him. I don’t really know the rest of the story, but she does fall in love with YWY after he helps her multiple times
