Lu Yi’s In The Name of People creates monstrous ratings

This is a rare happening. Lu Yi’s modern drama, In The Name of People, about corruption is unstoppable in its destruction of the ratings game, leaving everyone else in the dust. It generated a whopping 4.793 in yesterday competition, a phenomenon I haven’t seen in a long time (or have I seen it at all?!) At this rate, it will break 5 today? Tomorrow? Is anyone watching? Please sound out its winning traits!

Here’s the Ratings List according to CSM52 (the ratings of 52 cities) tally.

01. In The Name of the People slays all. With all episodes leaked, what’s the effect going to be?
02. Huang Da Ni (on Shan Dong station)
03. Surgeons with Jin Dong out with a good start.
04. Heirs with Hawick Lau and Jiang Xin.
05. Huang Da Ni (on Tian Jin station)
06. Surgeons on a different tv station
07. What A Wonderful Life with Li Sheng
08. Great Marriage Custom (Perfect Wedding) with Qiao Zhen Yu and Yang Zi re-airing
09. Bright Star with Wei Fan and Zheng Qi
10. Mu Lan Mother with Chen Xiao Yi (re-airing)

Fighter of the Destiny is airing in the midnight slot, after 10pm, with a decent beginning at 1.041. White Deer Plain stopped airing after episode 1 with the vague reason of a superior force, Force majeure, if you will. Uh oh.

For TV rating? Thought everything is online now.

there will tv ratings AND online views (if the drama is airing online). some dramas get both, some only get one (webdramas is the easier route to go if big stations don’t buy the airing copyrights.)

still surprised at the crazy ratings….

        Ah, I see.

That’s good news for them. Less competition right now.

You’ll enjoy it if you are interested in or have some understanding of Chinese politic. What intrigues me the most the blatant abuse of power the police chief shows and the sort of neutral as long as it’s good for GDP, i’ll pretend i didn’t see it attitude displayed by the mayor (actually city general secretary, but effective the mayor). The mayor also is un-expectly the most popular figure online, which i think is because he’s action is so typical of officials, which never get to be portrayed realistically on TV.

Here is a meme about him that’s really popular on bilibili.

Thanks for sharing that video! Made me laugh and I can’t even speak Mandarin XD

It’s mostly piercing dialogue. But the story, based on actual events about corruption at the top levels of government and throughout all levels of society was captivating. From what I read, even the younger audience was mesmerized by this drama although there was a complete absence of ‘young fresh meat’ and CGI action.

So tempted to check this out now just to see what the hype is about.

I managed to watch ep 1 of Surgeons last night. Got sidetracked during the last half of the episode but so far the beginning is promising.

It’s interesting how most of the currently airing dramas are more of the traditional “proper” dramas. It’s also surprising how In the Name of People is doing so well. I watched several episodes (~30 actually) and I don’t think it’s thaaaat good. I mean, it’s frustrating to watch but at the same time it’s a good thing because that’s pretty much politics. But they have those sorta propaganda bits here and there which are quite boring. I didn’t (and still don’t) see the potential for it to be such a HUGE hit, but I guess I’m very wrong.

I’ve started watching Surgeons as well, and I think it’s pretty entertaining.

I think the whole topic of anti-corruption just really resonates with majority of the mass audience, hence the hit ratings.

Frankly, it’s a refreshing break from the inundation of idol dramas with inexperienced actors. The over-saturation of xianxia fantasies and fairy-tale like romances makes this true-to-life drama stand out. Like Nirvana in Fire, this drama has brought attention and new fans for seasoned veteran actors who have been ignored by mainstream audiences. It’s also a backlash against the young idols who are short on acting skills but demand colossal salaries.

I agree with anon here. It’s a nice break from the much too common Mary Sue romances that fill the daily TV schedule. But I also agree with Kitai in that it’s a bit too propaganda-esque. Also, I find too many characters are too black and white. The super greedy, corrupt characters, vs the collection of saintly characters like the one played by Lu Yi. Another pro is the older actors’ acting is nice to watch. I was initially attracted by this drama. I tried to be patient after about 6 episodes. After a few more eps, I was getting increasingly bothered by the stark black vs white stark contrast. At times, I felt that perhaps one of the goals of this drama is to appease the public about real-life corruption.

@an on: The acting is absolutely awesome. From the corrupt official in the very first episode to the childhood friend, they are all fantastic. The acting is definitely on a different level compared to all those idol dramas. I mean, I was really indifferent to Mark Chao when he was getting all the praises in Eternal Love but in this drama I can feel how overwhelmingly good the acting is (bar a couple of characters). It’s literally spilling out of the screen.

My problem with the drama is that they are trying too hard to draw out the “good” in a character with all the preachy bits. Talking about contribution to the party, the good of the people, etc. just feels a little forced to me.

Also, I actually don’t see the charm of Secretary Da Kang. In fact, every character in the drama is frustrating for me. I’m just constantly annoyed by what they are doing. Perhaps it’s because I’m not Chinese so I can’t get the realism (I’m also extremely confused about their ranks). I do think that it’s a good drama though.

@kitai, I agree with you with the acting of the first corrupt official in ep 1. Lu Yi’s first target. That corrupt official’s acting mesmerized me. I don’t recall having seen that actor in anything before.
The plot could be smoothed out in some places. I did find the saintly characters were a bit too preachy. It feels a bit overbearing and unnatural at times.
I have forgotten which one Da Kang was. One of the more senior officers, I think. I watched a dozen eps or so soon after the drama started broadcast. After watching other dramas recently, I have forgotten half of the character names for this drama. 😛 I had a hard time watching only this drama until the end. It didn’t offer a huge range of topics for me. With half the characters being so black or white. It is like watching 2 people playing a long chess game. But if you’re not into chess, then there’s not much else to see.
There are characters from the central gov, including Lu Yi from the anti-corruption division. Then there are regional officers like mayor, deputy mayor, etc. Viewers need to be able to keep them straight to maximize viewing pleasure.

This was not the April runaway hit I was expecting. I think Lu Yi is attractive enough to draw in the audiences though even if he isn’t fresh meat ;). I won’t give this a try unless it’s subbed though. It seems like it’s all dialogue?

I’m watching Surgeons, Fight of the Destiny, Fox Fall in Love. I’m surprised by Fox Fall in Love, enjoying it a lot. Jiang Chao is handsome and is decent as the CEO, which I was afraid of. Kim Taehwan would have been serviceable too, but again the lips not matching really would have annoyed too much and been too distracting for me to enjoy as the main character has more lines than the one in My Amazing? Boyfriend. Glad FFL is getting subbed.

Audience reaction in China was very positive for the older non-mainstream actors who were praised for good acting, while Lu Yi’s acting was bashed by most as being less than convincing. Fans of this drama are drawn to the story and contents and not on physical beauty of the actors.

      • 26 thoughts on “Lu Yi’s In The Name of People creates monstrous ratings

It’s true. I never thought that Lu Yi is a bad actor, but in this drama he stands out because of his awkwardness.

It is!! love how Yan Shu stands up for herself while not sacrificing her cute behaviour and being the boss when she needs to.

Wow those numbers are big. I guess it’s good to see a more intelligent adult drama led by seasoned actors doing so well rather than some shallow CGI-fest led by another pretty boy frozen faced actor.

That is is weird about “White Deer Plain”. Must be very disappointing for the people who worked on it. What do they mean by superior force? Sounds a rather sinister.

    • 26 thoughts on “Lu Yi’s In The Name of People creates monstrous ratings

The official announcement for ‘White Deer Plain’ was that they wanted it to air simultaneously on multiple stations so it has been pushed back. But obviously everyone else is calling bull, and speculation says that it’s due to content. And then when it next airs, the content is likely to be edited. (Sigh, China)

      • 26 thoughts on “Lu Yi’s In The Name of People creates monstrous ratings

Thanks for the reply. I thought they check contents before the drama airs. I did think the trailer showed some surprisingly ‘racy’ scenes but I thought as the story is a apparently classic it might have more leeway for mature content than some idol drama or something.

Isn’t it because WDP is a huge production but ITNOP is winning so big on the ratings front that it’s just not logical to dump WDP in a timeslot that it absolutely will not win? They are just pitting their worst horse *cough* Star April *cough* against Hunan’s best horse right now. Perhaps the content is an issue, but I assumed that since it actually aired it must have passed the checks…

        • 26 thoughts on “Lu Yi’s In The Name of People creates monstrous ratings

I only took a peek at WDP. But topics similar to WDP had been done previously. There had been a number of Shanxi-type series. Memoirs in China, Qiao family courtyard, The Protector, etc. There were also Raise the Red Lantern type movies. If you cut and paste from the past Shanxi dramas, and combine it with Red Sorghum, I imagine it’s not too different from WDP. ITNOP’s contents and topics overlap less with past dramas. Just my guess.
