Rush to the Dead Summer (夏至未至) is adapted from Guo Jing Ming’s novel. The youthful story spans the period of ten years and focuses on friendship, alienation, and one ultimate betrayal that breaks the group of close friends, each going their own way and entering society. Despite growing up poor and kind, our heroine (Zheng Shuang) works hard and wins a scholarship into a grand secondary school (sounds familiar?) where she meets a talented painter-to-be (Cheney Chen) and his best friend (Bai Jing Ting). Of course, love blooms in more ways than one.

2017 hasn’t been very kind to Zheng Shuang but I’m glad she doesn’t back down from all the negativity directed her way. Her parents are producing a movie and she started her own business. The best thing is probably her mom saying “She’s a strong girl; a radiant sun, not a weak person like many people think.” =)

I wonder why Chinese dramas keep adding their amount of episodes in these recent years. I mean.. What?! 46 episodes for a Youth drama? Are they serious? The average standard amount seems to be between 50 and 60 episodes nowadays, regardless of the genre. Why oh why? Back in the days, the standard for period dramas use to be around 45 episodes and 30 episodes for modern dramas, only “zhengju’s” had more than 50 episodes.
For example, Bu Bu Jing Xin merely has 35 episodes.. I can’t imagine how many episodes it would have had if it was filmed in 2016/2017. Probably around 55 episodes o_O.

Agreed. I think most stories can be told within 30-35 episodes but scripts these days add way too many “dog blood” scenes and unnecessary characters. Plus excessive use of flashbacks. They just somehow manage to drag everything out into an additional 20 episodes.

I read an article and the episodes are not going down anytime soon especially with high profile dramas.
The answer is quite simple. Big stars are demanding more money. Fans and critics too wants high quality dramas. Once all the sets and costumes are in place, it saves them $ to continue shooting for additional episodes and broadcaster would still pay the same amount for each episodes. It’s not worth it to built expensive sets and costumes just for a mere 20-30 episodes now a days.
The big issue is not the # of episodes really, it’s the writing. Seriously some of them need to go back to school and learn how to probably do their intro, conflict, resolution, and at the same time balance out the story line w/in those long episodes. I’m going off topic here, but it’s kind of frustrating abusing my FF button.

Exactly. Suppose you cast A-list actors for both lead roles. That’s going to set you back at the very least RMB 1 million per episode. The bigger the names, the lesser your profit margins. It’s much more economical to spread the overhead costs of producing the sets and costumes over a larger number of episodes then. I do get the logic, but I don’t appreciate the effects of such a move. The plot just becomes way too draggy. If I have to watch another G&I, oh god…

I am getting frustrated with this. They keep making dramas longer and it hinders the story. It gets draggy. They could tell a story in 30 ish episodes and it would be far better than the 50-60 range. And now they are also breaking down the story into two seasons just to drag it on. I think they are doing it for online views, but it really ruins the drama.
We need less episodes and more high quality dramas like Nirvana.

im guessing you skipped the other posting. lol. no one made a big issue…. zheng shuang was caught smoking not so long ago and the netizens bashed her really hard (harsh comments about her faking an innocent image but is a bad role model), then a cascade of rumors popped up with her charging money for fanclub membership (untrue), then the disbandment of her chinese fanclub (true, she asked them to not waste money on her.)
some neutral ppl think its a whole lotta conspiracy to bring her down…. that’s the gist of everything. but doesn’t matter anymore cause her parents support her all the way!

tbh I agree with the episode ridiculousness but I also don’t mind as much cuz I enjoy longer dramas. If it’s good, I like it to last longer and don’t mind the episode count; if it’s bad, I usually drop it anyways.
BUT that said, a lot of the bad shows with high episode counts do tend to have too many unnecessary plot devices used to create contrived angst. But anyways.
So what’s up with ZS in 2017? I actually quite like her. Realistically, I think she’s a mediocre actress, maybe with some undiscovered potential, but definitely limited. I also think in reality shows her EQ really isn’t that great. That said, I still really like her. One, she really doesn’t deserve all the hate she gets. Yeah her acting’s not great, but really it’s not any worse than a lot of other mediocre actresses…some who are even worse. Yeah she’s not the charismatic witty onscreen persona ppl like from celebs. But tbh, after watching Divas Hit the Road 2, I feel like she’s very relatable in her struggles in relationships with others, and she pretty logical and meticulous; perhaps not as harebrained as some other celebs. Idk, I don’t really understand where all the negativity towards comes from.
I do hope she succeeds in her own new business tho. And that she gets an upturn in her acting career.

This looks like a beautiful story about youth. Love the cinematography and the visuals! Glad there’s finally a broadcast date for this.
Hopefully Zheng Shuang accepts a new work soon. Seems like she doesn’t have any dramas after this.

tbh for this specific drama, not interested AT ALL. I’d be ok with Zheng Shuang, but I’m seriously not a fan of Cheney Chen…like I think his acting is even worse than ZS’s…and it makes me sad that Bai Jing Ting is the second lead…again. He wasn’t great in Taekwondo Girl, but I feel like he’s really improved since then and even in reality shows, from his awkward hard-to-communicate self in the Bear Grylls show to his way more open and taking on different “identity” self in Crime Scene, he’s discovered himself more and learned to express a lot better. I really want to see him get more lead chances and another drama of him being the second lead in another youth-grow-up drama is too much for me. Esp when the lead is Cheney Chen, a “idol” actor not much better than BJT was back then…at least BJT has the excuse of being a newbie.

I think Cheney Chen did a really job in Decoded. I’ve only seen him in Decoded and first few eps of the drama with Ou Yang Nana.

I’ve kind of taken a liking to Bai Jing Ting since watching Crime Scene (to be specific, EP. 9) and I really really hope he does well in Rush to the Dead Summer so he can get some more roles. He’s not really an extremely good actor, but he’s steadily getting better and he’s vv cute, so yea.. ^-^
