Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

It looks good, very good. The name Zhao Ge (朝歌) comes from the last of a series of cities that served as capital of the Shang dynasty, and later capital of State of Wei [Wiki.] It is a fantasy historical drama retelling the wars between the Shang and Zhou dynasties written and produced by Yu Zheng. Yea, that’s the catch to all the pretty!

It’s like Yu Zheng’s money grow on trees. He continues with higher production value each time. How can he put out so many dramas while dealing with lawsuits? Amazing!

For a bad writer, he writes a lot. I need some of that flow. 😀

Pretty looking drama is pretty indeed.

LOL. Gege, don’t look at Yumama as your role model! XD

I think his mantra is, “Practice makes perfect.” So he keeps going forward. Lol.

But sis, controversial is key to quick success. lol

I saw this trailer a few days ago and was like whoa I’m gonna watch this for the pretty visual and that’s about it. For a bad writer, Yumama really knows how to lure in the audience with the amazing cinematography in his works. I am ashamed of myself for falling into this cycle over and over again….

I wonder what he copied this time hmm…

Honestly the cinematography is really really pretty, and I wonder how he gets all that money too, like that should cost loads.
Would maybe try a few episodes, but I have a huge hunch that it would end up like all other Yu Zheng productions lol. The only drama that I liked that was produced by him was Ruby’s 美人心计. That drama was awesome!

off topic, but does anyone else find the uproar in china “banning” korean entertainment annoying? like who cares what other countries do.

Personally i think banning korean music and dramas is a good thing for china

I didn’t realize why you brought this up until I saw the recent news.

I don’t really see any scenario in which China loses from banning Korean entertainment. Chinese people still get to watch it if they really want to through the internet, but homegrown shows and talent will be able to flourish more.

      1) More casting opportunities for talented Chinese actors
A good example of Chinese actors benefiting is Zhang Binbin who got the role in Pretty Li Hui Zhen because of the Korean ban and them changing it from that Korean idol singer person. He rocked that role, and it was all because of the restrictions. It was such good exposure for him, and helped his status tremendously which is wonderful because I think he is one of the biggest talents to emerge this year.

And let’s be honest, I have yet to recently see a good enough Kdrama actor cast where I think – wow, they really elevated the drama beyond what it could have been. Who’s loss is it when a Chinese actor can suffice?

      2) And I’ve said this time and time again, but dubbing actors who don’t bother to learn the language and get dubbed over without the voice matching can really ruin a good drama. It definitely doesn’t help.

      3) Even if they just choose a Thai actor, bringing in a thai actor is better investment because it helps the drama get more leverage for distribution in Thailand. Whereas Korea seems overly self absorbed with Hallyu and won’t watch a cdrama because a Korean is in it. There is very little financial benefit to hiring Koreans.

The less Korean revenue Kdramas make, the less they’ll be able to compete with Cdramas in terms of budget and be less competitive overall -> more money for cdramas to improve.

If anyone thinks of how this will be bad for Chinese entertainment, I’d love to know via a discussion post but I can’t see it.

I agree! China needs to stop being influenced by Korean entertainment or at least do a better job at ripping them off lol. From plastic surgery, bright coloured & unrealistic costumes, idol acting to god knows what. I mean, that’s how this whole idol dramas/actors trend started right? c-dramas prior to 2009-2010 weren’t aren’t like the dramas that are aired today. =/ (LOL that makes me sound so old) These days I swear all the women (and even men) look the same! China has so many talented people, they just need the chance to shine!!

china needs to stick with the masculine male actors they have now instead of the flowerboy types from korea

Need me more Wang kai and Hu ge

        • 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

China needs variety that appeals to the masses. Flower boys that appeal to the older women and older men that also appeal to younger folk like Jin Dong/Yan Kuan. Who doesn’t appreciate Jin Dong? I also think a lot of the “Flower boys” happen to be very masculine, like Hang Donjun, Zhang Ruoyun, Zhang Binbin, and to some extent Jing Boran, so it’s a good thing.

Same with the ladies and I think there’s a pretty good age range all around.

      • 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

I agree! I don’t like the idea of bringing in Korean actors for Chinese dramas. It’s just allowing Korea into an industry where they already have a lot of fans. And I’m not impressed by the acting of many Korean actors. Most people who watch Korean dramas will never watch Chinese dramas because they think it sucks. So there’s really no reason to appeal to the Korean audience by bringing in Korean actors. And honestly, most Korean actors probably accept those roles only because they get paid more in China than in Korea. I watch Chinese dramas for a reason, and that’s because of story development and acting that Korean dramas lack. I don’t want to watch Chinese dramas just to see another Korean face.

Is Li Yi Tong the main girl???

Looks like it’s Wu Jin Yan paired up with Zhang Zhe Han.

Holy cow.. I hate to admit this as a Yumama anti.. But this looks .. damn good, seriously good. Like what the heck did this guy do after disappearing during his lawsuits? Attend a speed course of how to do it “right” with dramas? I mean, this looks even prettier and more breath-taking than Tribes and Empires, which I thought had already reached the limit (so far) of Chinese dramas in visual feast for the eyes. I mean, generally speaking, Yumama has always been quite good with casting eye candies, but I was never a fan of his aesthetics.. His color patterns in period dramas are way too colorful and bright for my taste. Costume design, production design and make-up are sometimes too much over the top as well. His dramas usually have this very heavy Yumama style which I personally don’t really dig, but I know many international viewers seem to like his colorful and bright images. Schemes of a Beauty is probably his only drama that I like.

But this one doesn’t seem to have a trace of his usual Yumama style. Like cinematography wise, custome design, color pattern etc.. This guy has finally improved! And now he needs to work on his scripts as well, no plagiarism anymore, and stop being an arsehole. Then maybe one day, I might actually start to like his dramas.

    • 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

I shouldn’t have concluded too quickly. Lol. Just saw the full trailer.

It still looks good and better than what Yumama usually has to offer, but the costumes and styling are still very Yumama style. Extravagant. But atleast the colors are toned down a lot. And the location filming looks amazing.

      • 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

Lol. I mentioned in the last post that he hired experts and a new stylist for this production, hence the dramatic improvement visual-wise. 😀

    • 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

Well the be fair, the only reason anyone ever watches a Yumama production is the eye candy cast and the pretty production visuals. The script is usually very bad. The only Yumama one that I liked was Mei ren wu lei.

This trailer reminded me so much of the trailer for Tribes and Empires – especially the beginning with the wide angle natural scenery shots.

  7. 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

The cast doesn’t interest me, though Merxat looks hot. Cinematography looks good, but too much CGI isn’t gonna sit well with viewers for extended time. Mainly meh cause Yu Zheng

  8. 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

Hahaha I think we’re all allergic to Yumama XP Good to see that he’s finally toned down the colours.

That photo of Wu Jin Yan is really pretty *_*

  9. 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

The costumes design is so very weird… The accessories are so extravagant… But it does look stunning xD I’m quite looking forward to it

  10. 23 thoughts on “Zhao Ge’s First Trailer is a visual quiet feast for the Eyes

This looks amazing! Visually it’s almost on par with Tribes and Empires, but perhaps with a different feel. Those wide shots and battle scenes are really something, makes the battle in 3L3W look amature in comparison and I thought that was pretty well done.

Oh and another plus, naked sex scenes! Hurray! No more wearing clothes in bed all the time.

“Oh and another plus, naked sex scenes! Hurray! No more wearing clothes in bed all the time.”

Hee hee…have to admit I was surprised to see that. Clearly I’ve been watching too many Asian dramas these days when the sight of a naked back in a bed scene surprises me!

I’m so confused by the trailer. Def prettier than Yumama’s other stuff, but tbh some of the accessories (like the head and shoulder pieces) are really too much. Improvements made, but with Yumama’s track record with the plot and story at least, not too keen to watch. Gillian’s gorgeous tho…
