Sigh. They are so cute but these kids have a lot to live up to, especially in drama adaptations of Jin Yong’s wuxia novels, which have been done many times through the years and some are still considered the golden standards (tvb) even up to this day. The new Legend of of the Condor Heroes has a press conference today and they release a new trailer along with snippets of the opening themesong sang by Silence Wang.
Stills:
Trailer #2:
Directed by Jeffrey Chiang (The Myth) and written by Chen Man Ling (The Legend of Magic Mirror), The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2017 premiers on January 9th.

It’s a good thing Yu Zheng has helped set the standard low for JY’s adaptation. 😀
Good luck to these kids, LOCH has great adaptations in the past, so the bar is indeed high.
Love the theme song so far, from what little I can hear.
Looking forward to the full version. Bring on the MV!

Indeed, the bar is very high! I don’t have high expectation. Beautiful sceneries, but the cast, costumes, songs, etc. can’t compare to Felix Wong’s version.

One could only imagine if Felix’s version happened in 2017…. What explosion it could bring to the TV world…

Yes! TVB did make a couple of classic dramas. I’m very critical when it comes to JY’s novels. Hehe

The new trailer shows a more tragic version of MNC and YK? I don’t remember Mu Nian Ci ever falling off a cliff, and she’s usually the one “waiting at home” for him, so I also don’t remember YK ever going home and not finding her there?
Also the Huang Rong/GJ falling-off-cliff scene…maybe it’s from when they’re on the island??? I don’t know anymore. It looks good though, and adaptations always need sometime to make them stand out, so too early to say but maybe the changes are good.
I definitely like that this trailer gives more OTP scenes. LOVING the HR/GJ vibe so far. They have chemistry at least. It’s usually hard to get this pairing really wrong cuz they’re just so cute. I really like their vibe tho. Very adorable. I’m still not feeling YK yet, but I like that MNC has her characteristic serious/somber-ness and quiet conviction, yet isn’t weak and gives off a quiet strength vibe. LSS as MNC, while very pretty, seemed a little too hmm…like, weak? I don’t want to say that cuz it’s not quite the right word, but as far as I can think of right now, LSS’s MNC could be described as ‘weak’ to me.
At the same time, seeing Meng ZiYi is so weird cuz not long ago I was watching her (still am cuz the last ep hasn’t aired yet) in reality show Grade One Graduates. She…was not my fav, but didn’t hate her. Good for her that she looks good here. Lol from the last too-much-drama ep of the reality show, she’d left cuz she had scheduling conflicts with her filming at the time, some drama with Ma Tian Yu 😀 (I think the one with Wallace? Where Ma Tian Yu again doesn’t get the girl, who also happens to be his non-blood-related sister?). I’m pretty sure Meng Zi Yi is the one playing the supporting girl unrequitedly loving our dear Ma Tian Yu (in the show, she calls him Tian Yu Ge Ge :D).

Definitely agree that of the four main characters, Yang Kang comes off as the youngest and not as conniving as I would like him to be. Like he’s role-playing in a doll house. He just looks like a kiddo! XD
Tian Yu is my gege!! Hands off, Miss Dream! ;D

Oh trailer looks good, I hope we don’t have to wait too long for subtitles.
You Mandarin speakers are just too lucky…

Aww, it’s okay DonD! If you have watched previous versions, the story should be similar with minor changes here and there. At least, I hope so. 🙂

Haha true, but still so much more fun when you actually understand what they are saying 🙂

Looking at the stills and the trailers, I am most bothered about:
1. Guo Jing’s bangs. When the actors don’t have appropriate hairstyles, to me it means that the drama is not “serious” (examples include all the Tangren drama adaptations from video games). How difficult is it to wear a wig? Proper historical dramas, even if they are fictional, are really strict about styling.
2. The casting for Mu Nianci’s character. She looks like the odd one out. Her thick makeup just stands out. I always think of Mu Nianci to be a character of gentle disposition. She is totally unsuitable. In fact, she reminds me of Changle from Princess Weiyoung lol.

It’s not just the thick makeup, she actually looks a bit too plastic to me? Something about the small jaw plus bloated cheeks and forehead. I really don’t get why so many rising Chinese actresses these days resemble Weibo online personalities who love cosmetic surgery and Meitu. 🙁
When their co-actors look natural, they just stand out but in a negative way.

I agree. But tbh LYT also looks slightly plastic imo, that’s why I left that part out. The pictures from outside the drama look better, so I’m thinking it may just be the makeup. Anyway, I think there is a really bad trend going on with PS right now in the Chinese entertainment industry. Most of them look the same. I mean, I can’t differentiate between Yang Zi and Shu Chang at all. Even Rachel Mao who got rave reviews for her character in Love O2O fixed her face little by little. I don’t get why they are doing it, because doing PS is akin to taking a huge risk. It may turn out very well, but you may also end up with an unnatural, stiff looking face. Not to mention all of them are doing the same procedures, which makes them look like clones of one another.

plastic surgery is never going to die down, its a staple in Korea and hollywood and other countries for decades. as long as people still like pretty people, it’s never going away. honestly though, as long as the changes don’t cause them to lose their ability to emote, i’m okay with what they want to do with their money. lol.
i’ve watched shu chang over the years, she hasn’t change much at all. yang zi is losing her baby fat to me, in some of her kids pictures, she has the pointed chin all along. i think the issues is their styling is the same in that drama so it’s easier to see them looking similar.

I’ve watched Shu Chang over the years as well, I think essentially she looks the same, but she’s definitely had some minor fixes here and there (injections) which made her face look stiff. SC doesn’t need PS, and that’s why I think it’s really a pity. On the other hand, I won’t say Yang Zi overhauled her face, but it’s certainly not just baby fats lost. In fact, if you look at her from Battle of Changsha to Legend of Chusen, it’s pretty obvious that she did most of the basic procedures. Most people who watched her in BoC and in her earlier sitcom could not identify her in Chusen at all.
I’m not against PS really, but I think PS needs to be done in moderation. It can absolutely amplify your beauty. However, the actors are all using the same mold to craft their faces. This is why so many actors look like, as NPC mentioned, Weibo personalities. Plus, plastic beauty generally lacks broad appeal. When you are so obviously plastic, you’re not going to be well liked by the viewers. Even if the operation was hugely successful (e.g. Sun Feifei was one of the more well known plastic beauties), maintenance and stuff can catch up, and you see that after 7/8 years or so the negative aftereffects of PS become obvious. I just think it’s not worth it.

shu chang, i definitely don’t see the changes.
yang zi, possible.
in the end though, whether or not it’s worth is all decided by the person themselves. we might not like it, but it’s their choice.
if they can act with emotions and not look unrecognizable, all is good with me.

The reason I don’t like plastic surgery on recent Chinese actresses is that many procedures nowadays, especially jaw shaving, make their features look exaggerated and even a bit alien-ish to me. There are plenty of nose jobs and eye surgeries which turn out wonderfully and you still look human, so I’m not completely against plastic surgery.
Yang Zi in Chusen and a couple of other actresses look exactly like the after-pictures from extreme Korean jaw shaving surgeries, even though it’s probably just botox.
The general public might call it being pretty but noticeably plastic faces are just not my thing.
