Feng Shao Feng’s The Starry Night The Starry Sea to air

WHYYYYYYYYY? WHYYYYYYYYY? WHYYYYYY NOW? I’m exhausted. Lol.

The drama adaptation of Tong Hua’s novel, The Starry Night The Starry Sea (那片星空那片海), starring William Feng Shao Feng as the lonely merman and Haden Kuo as his human lover will follow the slot left behind by Pretty Li Hui Zhen and premieres on February 5th. I was gonna rant more until I rewatched the trailer and found it so beautifully filmed, with wide ocean shots and clashing of sea waves fluttering before my eyes…. With snow covering my streets, I do like being serenaded by the calls of a summer love.

Ah….I’m so easy. __❤ But don’t you agree, it’s one heck of pretty modern drama!

New Stills:

Keep in mind, this drama will also have an ancient version (filming) with the addition of Hong Kong actor Bosco Wong. Previous posts here.

Synopsis Translated by Kappy: Our female lead is a 26-year old woman who lives quite a lonely life. With her parents divorced, her stepmother and step bro hate her, she becomes a sensitive and mature lady, independent and practical in her thinking. Moving away from the busy city life, she moves to small cottage in the island. She has no time for daydream of a romantic love and often questions herself why she falls for the hero with a mysterious background. She is uncertain about his status, his money, and his love for her. Our hero is a merman, a mystical creature only spoke of in legends. While he’s the boss of the sea, he has lived for a very long time. He has stepped foot on land before, formed friendships, and eventually witnessed their aging bodies become white ashes. What’s left of them is only memories, photos, paintings – all are good stories to tell on a quiet night. He stands tall through time. Seeing too much, understanding too much, and feeling too much, he’s now a jaded merman. They meet for the first time when he’s injured and she finds him unconscious at her doorstep. Living under the same roof, she intends to have him do housework (LOL) but he displays no sense of physical labor. HEHE. Using his special powers and astute intelligence, he helps her overcome many obstacles and feelings are naturally developed. Of course, trouble comes knocking at their door when her prized possession – a magical pearl, causes her to be in the crossfire of forces she knows nothing about. To save her, our hero has to sacrifice his life. Dun, Dun, Dun. [Mixture between the novel and the drama scripts.]

Ok… this sounds like a cross between Goblin and The Legend of the Blue Sea. Immortal man who had seen it all and became jaded due to all the loses and memories (tick for Goblin), a merman (tick for The Legend of the Sea) and he must die for her (tick for Goblin). So now, we have an immortal and powerful merman who went to land, fell in love with a human woman and has to die for her. Why am I feeling that writers nowadays lack creativity and keep recycling ideas?

I knew this will happen with people mistaken this drama for copying Kdramas when it will be aired later than those.I was one of them too until this blog owner and reader corrected me.

This drama does not recycle those ideas,in fact can we say kdrama writers “reused” them if we really must do blaming game? I found out that the novel was out back in 2015 wayy before kdramas started trying out fantasy genre. And I knew FSF started filming it in early 2016 because I am his “fan” and kind of followed his news. But I never knew what kind of drama it was due to lack of info in english.

It doesn’t help that Chinese have a bad reputation for being copycats and Kdramas are more popular on English-language websites. I can already see many Kdrama fans mistaking this drama for an uncreative copy even though it’s based on a novel from 2015…

It doesn’t matter to me who copied who, plus I am aware that the idea originated from Chinese novels/manhwa etc. Point is drama-makers and writers are lacking creativity nowadays – recycling ideas from each other. Also, technically and legally speaking, the Koreans came up with this idea first even if the Chinese already have stories similar to this. Why? In the research & academia world, whoever publishes first is the first to claim credit and Intellectual Property (IP). This is the reason why countries with high publishing rates are also the same countries ranking high in academia and research. Same case with novels, musics, dramas & movies. Doesn’t matter if you came up with the idea first but if the other person published it first, the idea is legally his not yours. It is unfair and cruel, I know but this is how it is. Therefore, Chinese drama and film-makers must up their game and speed not just quality if they want to compete with the Koreans and Japanese. Otherwise, will always be labeled as “follower” or “copycat” despite having the idea first. China having a population of billions is naturally a melting pot of talents and ideas compared with the few millions in Korea and Japan. But the problem with China is, although they have the talent, they lack competitiveness and the means to express it to its best possibility! In the end, talent either exported out of the country or never see the light of day.

if we are going technical with publishing date then the Chinese Novel was published first in 2015. We didn’t hear anything about Blue Sea until April of 2016. lol. not like it matters anyway, korean fans will always think chinese dramas copy their dramas, even if adaptations are high from both ends.

Hi, frea. Well, if they filed in a legal publishing date earlier, then the IP right is theirs and they can sue the Koreans if they see any similarities in dialogue, character and story. Thing is, because everyone’s writing something similar and recycling ideas, taking the Koreans to court would be a very expensive exercise that in the Chinese’ eyes, it’s not worth the investment. So, I say, the Chinese need to hurry up and air dramas quicker and be the first to claim credit! Airing it quicker is also better for business as you will get first dip on the market.

chinese need to highly publicize that this story preceded the korean version!

Next time, I will include it in the post so fans won’t get confused with Goblin and Legend of the Blue Sea. 🙂
