Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

This news makes me gloomy on a Sunday! WHYYYYYYYYYYYY. As you know, Yang Rong has been attached to this project for two years and Merxat was recently confirmed as her male lead, but just this morning, Yu Zheng came out to apologize about the cast changes. His reason is the copyrights to film the tv series is going to expire soon and Yang Rong’s schedule has conflict (she’s filming a another project) so the production crew is rushing to start filming right now. As for Merxat, he also can’t film because of a personal reason. The new OTP is now revealed by various news outlets to be Guan Xiao Tong (Novoland The Castle In The Sky) and Song Wei Long (Demon Girl).

The hashtag “grief/sad for Yang Rong” is trending on weibo.

Yang Rong and Merxat.

Feng Qiu Huang follows the story of a modern girl who wakes up one day and finds herself in the body of Liu Chu Yu, a princess of the Liu Song Dynasty. The princess is known for telling her younger brother, Emperor Qianfei, about the unfairness in his harem verses hers, at which he granted her thirtysomething male concubines. That sounds awesome… only now our heroine has to finds way to survive, knowing that history isn’t on her brother’s side (he’s overthrown). Rong Zhi, our male lead, is one of the heroine’s mysterious concubines, who’s known for his scheming personality and slyness.

Nah, it’s just another yuzheng drama so who cares anyway. Sounds just like another BBJX, and LSS is already doing another similar one…and sounds like Princess Agent also has the same time traveling to be trapped inside somebody’s body again…..so with FQH as well…this time traveling thing is way over the top. Quite sure YR will find something better.

Time-traveling is removed in both Princess Agents and Lost Love In Times. Cnovels love this trope for some reason.

I’m just upset that she’s changed in the last minute before production begins (all the anticipation and waiting). And was looking forward to her collaboration with Merxat.

Yes, something better will come ~ happy thoughts!

Yeah, I feel like time travel is so beloved in China. It’s different from the rebirth genre (like 锦绣未央) but majorly overused, especially recently, where it’s just a trope and, most novels don’t even really need it (I felt it was completely unnecessary in 醉玲珑)

BUT, time-travel is pretty significant in Feng Qiu Huang. You can’t tell the story without the heroine Chu Yu being a time traveler (just like BBJX needs to have Ruoxi as a time traveler). And this story is completely different from BBJX. Lost Love in Times 醉玲珑 is basically a BBJX rehash (I’ve read the book and a lot of the stuff is basically identical, just with a new historical background, names etc.), but Feng Qiu Huang is a classic.

She’s a modern girl who’s landed in the body of a powerful princess with tons of male concubines that are all trying to get on her good side for various different reasons. She tries getting rid of them and then remembers that her brother gets overthrown, and she tries to outsmart history. Liu Chu Yu sultry and funny and smart, completely different from Feng Qing Chen and Maertai Ruoxi. It’s a pretty fun read, anyone who’s interested should try it out!

Sad for Yang Rong but happy for Song Wei Long. He really is such a cutie.

    Merxat looks asymmetrical to me

What an upsetting news 🙁 I was looking forward to Yang Rong being in a “huge” ancient drama production, and her name has been attached to this drama for so long, only to be changed out because of the production team’s inability to schedule filming timings efficiently! What a bummer!
Hope she finds sth better, and maybe a bad ass female character 🙂

Looking at YR’s post on weibo, feeling even more sad for her sigh!
Didn’t really like the way YZ replied to a comment regarding the situation though. Maybe I am just bias against him hahaha!

Maybe a blessing for YR? It’s a YZ’s production after all. Not much of a loss lol

Yang Rong was my dream cast for Chu Yu! She has just the right mix of womanly charm mixed with steeliness that I thought fit the character of Liu Chu Yu perfectly! I just don’t think Guan Xiao Tong can pull it off. It feels like when Michelle Chen was cast for Xiaolongnv. GXT feels too girlish and young for this kind of role (because Chu Yu pre-body switch was this jaded woman living amongst so many pretty men, and post-body switch is tis strong-minded modern woman). I was looking forward to this, even if it was a Yumama production because Feng Qiu Huang is such a classic in the time-traveling genre, and now I think I’m going to have to skip this one.

But for anyone who hasn’t read Feng Qiu Huang, GO READ IT! It’s one of the original classics of the time travel genre, just as important as BBJX.

YZ killed a classic LOTCH, so I don’t expect much from his adaptation here lol His Demon Girl was terrible…

FQH is an epic novel. So sad to see it’s getting this kind of treatment. Yang Rong would have made a great Chu Yu.

You would think that YZ knew the copyright was expiring soon, he would start shooting when YR was finished with Memory Lost, but why have her sign on to a drama just a few weeks ago?!?! Doesn’t make sense.

To me, she already knew she wasn’t going to be the female lead anymore that’s why the other drama. Now it’s only YZ’s excuse that she doesn’t have time because of schedule conflicts and Memory Lost promotion.

She posted on Weibo this morning: Want to say something but don’t know what to say. So I think she was replaced T__T

      • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

I know she knew she was replaced. I think YZ hinted awhile back when he confirmed Merxat would be Rongzhi, the next day on his weibo, something along the line of he solved problem A, but didn’t think he would have problem with B..blah blah blah. Also, he posted another stating YZ is so busy with her new drama and Memory Lost promotion and other activities…leading to fans speculation about the replacement.

I was only speculating that she knew after Memory Lost that she won’t be in this drama, that’s why she signed on filming her current drama *sigh*

I like Guan Xiao Tong in Novaland as she was pretty decent. Then I saw her in The Left Ear and gave me a good impression as well so I think she can be a strong versatile actress. Also, she’s really young too and to be already landing leading roles after one production after another is impressive. I heard somewhere in another blog that she’s dubbed as China’s Nation Little Sister like IU/Suzy to Korea? LOL So, is she’s sort of the “it” girl right now? Novaland did pretty well despite the competition between with bigger stars.

Wow, 30 concubines? Lucky girl, haha. Somehow, I always love when girls get the harem treatment maybe because I’m a girl, hehe.

It’s a bonus to have good backings too. Not many actors have that opportunity to get lead roles, even if they’re great in acting, where some actors are mediocre but have good companies/investors to back them up.

For example, Yuan Shan Shan. She’s with Yu Zheng for many years too, but she’s always landing lead role in his production even though her acting is IMO less than mediocre, and when she was filming his series Yang Rong always ended up being a supporting character. In this case, the boss favors YSS.

IU and Suzy, they’re both popular and appears to always being cast as female leads…why? Both are medicore actresses, but Suzy was worse (IMO). Their series were flops, but they get casted because they’re popular.

I’m not sure about Guan Xiaotong. I think she’s a decent actress, but I’ve read that she always have a great company to back her up, that’s how she landed this role in this short period of time. Yang Rong was promised and attached for 3 years, but got switched a month before it was supposed to start shooting? Schedule conflict and too busy?

      • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

Okay, thanks for the information. That makes senses on why some good actors always get supporting roles. It makes me appreciated the one who were playing supporting roles and worked really hard and eventually get to break out and obtain the lead roles. In the end, entertainment business is just business. I guess that would explain why Guan Xiaotong gets lots of lead roles lately especially in big productions. She was just leading another big one with Alan Yu, I believe. Never read the novel so sorry if the actor/actress look like they don’t match but I got to say GXT and Song Wei Long look kinda cute together already by the pictures.

And…YR is a good actress and seems to be popular too so I wonder why she was always retaliate to second female leads..though I haven’t watched any of the dramas she’s been leading in yet…Hmm if that’s the case, do you think she’ll ever branch out or leave his company? Because this kind of treatment is kind of sad T_T

        • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

I hope she leaves his company, she dedicated and wasted 6 years playing just supporting roles in his production. This drama was a big deal for her, it would be her first major big production. Supposingly, he bought the copyright of the book having her in mind and confirmed her as female lead for 3 years, even up to this month she was still confirmed. Just for it to be pulled right under her feet before shooting. Any actresses, and fans alike would be devastated and upset. I get the investors have the final say, they may prefer younger and more popular actresses for the part (in this case GXT), that’s why the replacement. But Yu Zheng had 3 years, and if the investors didn’t want Yang Rong since the beginning, they would have said so, they had 3 years to tell him. But they didn’t….so if that’s the reason why tell him to switch now?

I hope Yang Rong got a better offer after this, and leave his company for good. She should learn by now that his words can’t be trusted.

      • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

Oh wow. That’s really disheartening to hear. She’s been there that long and this is the treatment he gives her. Unless she’s indebted to him for helping her become the actress she is today? Well, the way you explained it I do hope she eventually leaves his company or maybe become a free agent?

This also helps explains why some K-dramas now are pre-produced because of the Chinese investors. Hmm, thanks again for the information! 🙂

        • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

No. They were in college together. She was already an actress before she signed on. She was a prominent actress, may not be as well known yet during that time, but who knows, she may have had better opportunities if she signed with other company back then. Like I previously, she wasted her 5-6 years playing supporting roles in his production, and the one big break he promised and she waited to film, then this happened. YZ is known to be a liar and a hypocrite, what else is new?…LOL

      • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

They met in college? I’m confused LOL. I’m sort of new to Cdramaland…sort of I started diving into it 2014 but watched a couple from time to time. This blog keeps me updated with things. I’m usually a kdrama person haha. I never really watched any of YZ’s production or if I had…it never last long, lol. I don’t know it’s come off really cringeworthy. I see. I heard bad things about about him here and other blog sites as well. Yeah, hopefully. But I thought he gave her a lead in that one drama called Memory Lost. Wait…do you mind explaining what is …or the definition of big production? Sorry for asking too much.

A few days ago I read on weibo that the sponsors didn’t like YZ’s choice for male lead. There’s some serious disconnect between him and the sponsors. Ugh.

You know, I don’t know how I feel about this anymore. I’ll just pretend like an adaptation never happened and be content with just reading the novel.

    • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

Switching out the male lead would have been more acceptable with fans, since he was only announced a month ago? But also switching out Yang Rong, who was attached/confirmed 3 years ago up to last month. This is actually bigger than I thought, weibo is going out of control on the subject.

      • 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

I wish YZ would have just let the copyright expire. One less classic for him to ruin.

  9. 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

Oh no. i was looking forward n happy for Yang rong.
Guan Xiao Tong is cute but i dont dig her acting.

  10. 25 thoughts on “Rumbling cast changes to Yu Zheng’s Feng Qiu Huang

This has given me the motivation to finally read the novel since I don’t think I’ll end up watching the drama XP

It’s such a shame that Yang Rong got switched out cos it’s one of the first big productions she’s been/was casted as the lead =_=
