Faithful to Buddha, Faithful to You releases First Character Posters

Ready to take a peek at the angst-iest novel being adapted? Last week Faithful to Buddha, Faithful to You (不负如来不负卿) revealed the fresh-faced OTP and this week we have posters and stills ready to be scrutinized. Lol. I love the spectrum of golden colors and subtle hues of the costumes, but somehow they managed to make the ladies not as pretty?

Posters and Stills:

Brief Summary translated Last Week by moi: The story follows an epic love story through time when a historian student successfully time-travels through time (many failed attempts before). She’s 23 when she meets our little monk, Kumarajiva, who is 13 at the time, and their relationship begins as teacher and student (Xiao Long Nv and Yang Guo?), but he develops a crush on her ever since. Years passed for him but only mere months for her and they meet again when the little boy is at the blossoming age of 24. They recognize their love for each other but he is man with a divine mission and they suffer immensely. The third time they meet again, Kumarajiva is in the worst years of his life and she stays by his side through it all.

I don’t know about ya’ll but I think this new kid on the block might just take the cake for the handsomest monk!

Where To Read the Translated Novel?
01. Translated by Haru at Snow Jade Flowers (Not an easy novel to translate due to religious terms and the author’s expansive vocabulary. Major props!)

Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, Faithful to Buddha, Faithful to You is directed by Li Yun Liang (Love in Nanking).

Started slowly chipping away at the translated novel last week. It’s actually REALLY good. Not surprised but I really like it. The history and culture are super rich and not dry at all. Also very different since it focuses more on the Chinese Buddhism/western China/Asia part of things. Really in love. Not like an all consuming frantic must-read 24/7 love, but like a slow building deep simmering sort of love. Like I don’t read it every day (usually in my CS lecture) but every chapter makes an impact and I don’t forget details as really remember every chapter even if I read it a week ago. It’s really emotionally impactful in a indescribable sort of way. Just feels really majestic and grand. Like Kumarajiva’s aspirations and dreams are beyond the individual.
Lol and Kumarajiva is supposed to be really handsome. When Ai Qing first sees him she comments a lot about his awesome looks.

Yes, it’s very well-written and beautiful. It’s one of the few novels that made me wish I lived in that time. But the author’s prose is precisely why I had my heart broken lol. It’s so good that it sucks you right in.

You two are trying to get me on this reading train?! Lol. I read the author’s profile and it makes sense why her prose and knowledge make readers bleed… happily. Hah.

But too angsty. In my current condition, I just want rainbows and unicorns. X)

I agree with you, Kap. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone who looks this great without any hair. Except looking at him in monk’s robes makes me want to recite the Heart Sutra. He is a little too good looking for a monk. LOL. The author apparently chose this actor herself and I have to say she has good taste in this matter. =P

Still haven’t picked up the novel again but I may just wait until this drama is about to air.

Author needs to be smitten above everyone else. =P Good taste. Maybe someone can draw him and I could hang him up on my wall. Mom wouldn’t know he’s an actor in a role of a monk. LOL!

Or you could have his photo enlarged. Could be used as a religious image. =P

wow..angsty buy a good read? I’m tempted by all the positive feedback already….should I? The last angsty book I read was The Promise by TongHua…

    • 15 thoughts on “Faithful to Buddha, Faithful to You releases First Character Posters

Haven’t read The Promise, but from what I’ve heard from others and from what I’ve read in Faithful, I feel like Faithful has an extra layer that The Promise doesn’t have. It’s very much profound and feels very majestic. The love story seems to be angsty, but it’s also so culturally rich, and so far Kumarajiva seems to be driven by his own dreams and so the angst, based on what little I know, seems to be much more larger-than-self and angsty but accepting and maybe even bittersweet?

One of the bloggers I follow said the novel was “transcendental”. Very befitting term. The romance is boundless. It leaves one person feeling at awe and more knowledgable than before. It’s “soul-wretching” in the angst, but you can see that the character’s inner conflict is understandable. Really good layering of the male lead and a likable female lead.

Haha 4 days later and I’m halfway through the book. It’s angsty but not that hard a read…so far.
      But thanks for the advice!

To me the handsomest monk is shifu (Tang Seng) from Journey to the West 😀 I miss Kwong Wa 🙁
Although I enjoyed the 1986 version as well. Love it when actors that play monks have soft features.

It maybe just me, but I imagined Kumarajiva wearing brown robes?
The posters not how I’ve imagined it (would love the backdrop to be Chinese scripts)… but I’ll roll with it 😛

Same here, same here. Kwong Wa was always my choice for handsomest monk even when Huang Xiao Ming and Kris Wu acted as monks before! Until this little kid came along and snatched the number 1 spot. Lol. He’s classically handsome to me while Kwong Wa has the aura and feel of an authentic monk. XD
