Various news outlets broke out the news about the highly anticipated sequel to Nirvana In In Fire this morning, naming young rising star, Liu Hao Ran (With You), as the leading man for The Wind Blows in Chang Lin (琅琊榜之凤起长林). Netizens, of course, have very mixed reactions. The producer has already said before that the story is not completely linked to part 1 so a fresh story with new characters makes sense. If anything, they are more concerned about the script above all else, which is what I appreciate the most. Writing is seriously lacking these days in Cdramas. I adore Liu Hao Ran and yes, he’s very young! Only 18! If you’re gonna push for new faces, he’s the right choice! Now let’s keep Leo Wu Lei so the two good friends can play together on set. XD
Liu Hao Ran recently brought home the award for Best New Actor at the 20th China Film Satisfaction Survey Release Ceremony for his role in Detective Chinatown.
Trailer and MV for his movie (lol the whole Run Brothers crew):
The original crew of Season 1 will return: directors Kong Sheng and Li Xue and writer Hai Yan.

his age is what worries me a bit… are we gonna have all young kids running around? talented kids…but might look very unconvincing in the ear of war!

Actually being a general at 18 makes sense during those days. Some of the greatest generals achieved their military successes in their teens. Some, like Huo Qubing (the general in which Eddie Peng’s character in Sound of Dessert was based on) even died in his early 20s! Others like Gao Changgong (Prince of Lan Ling) died in his early 30s. It is important for young boys and able-bodied youths to enlist in the army during war times. The younger you join, the ‘brighter’ your future for promotion in the army. If you join too old, you might only have a few years of fight left in you before you become too old for war. This also explains why during the old days of war, men or rather young boys married early – often before they enlist into the army as a way to try to produce heirs and preserve the family line. Unfortunately, this led to the problem of young widows and children after the war. 🙁

I swear a voice in my head just yelled “Nooooooooooo” to this news. Nothing against Liu Hao Ran though, I just personally want to see Hu Ge in another wonderfully-written and directed drama like Nirvana in Fire again. I’ll watch this, but time to rewatch the first one again.
And YES, please bring Leo on board. His loyal puppy character was one of my favourites.

How is it even Nirvana in Fire if neither Hu Ge nor Wang Kai is in it???
Nothing against fresh blood but WTF…
Wu Lei being in NIF2 will be awesome cuz he’s from the original NIF and his character Fei Liu is so beloved!

I’m guessing they’re going to tell the story of the characters during their younger years — hence the young actors. I’m curious if Liu Hao Ran will play Lin Shu. If he is, I want to know who they pick as young Prince Jin. This said, Wu Lei is casted again, I’m not sure if he’s going to be Fei Liu (Fei Liu should’ve been a baby by then LOL). So this is actually a prequel to Nirvana, not a sequel.

One thing I learned after watching three Kong Sheng’s dramas (AQiB, BoC, NiF) is he either never, NEVER cast a wrong actor/actress to play the part, or he is able to push the actor/actress to bring about what is needed. In conclusion I don’t think in his dramas there’s ever any ‘weak link’. And didn’t they say it’s gonna have different set of characters, or has it changed? Either way I’m still excited.

Uh how about the female lead in All Quiet in Peking and the female lead in The Disguiser (Hu Ge’s girlfriend). Both of them were could not act and it was glaringly obvious since everyone else in the series were absolutely amazing.
That said Kong Sheng hasn’t cast a wrong male actor before so hopefully Liu Hao Ran will be ok – really wanted someone older and had solid acting. I feel like Shan Ying is trying to hard to move into idol drama territory and forsaking their quality, serious production which they are known for.

I thought The Disguiser was Lin Xue’s work, no? And I actually have no problem with LiuYe’s love interest in AQiB (she did nothing for me, but really I though it’s just supposed to be her character), but agree with HuGe’s girlfriend she made me cringe. That being said, none of them is supposed to carry the show in some way or another so their performance didn’t really affect my viewing experience. Unlike the case of Liu Hao Ran here, supposed to be the ‘leading man’, I think they’re gonna choose more carefully.
For me personally, I’m glad they chose these ‘idol’ actors who can act to act in their dramas. It raised the possibility of the drama to get subbed, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to watch any of the drama I mentioned ^^. Of course, quality is still number one priority. Hope they maintain it.

I think I read that Hu Ge’s gf in Disguiser is or was the Director’s acquaintance. They might have said “Director’s gf”. I can’t remember. The actress paired with Han Dong Jun in Good Times (also a Hu Ge drama), is said to be Good Times’ director’s daughter.
Liu Hao Ran doesn’t bother me. We’ll see who the female lead will be. Some of the 20+ yr old actresses look very young. Zhou dong yu, An yue xi, Wu qian.

she stated above guys, the story is not completely linked but its a different set of characters in a new story. it will only have the background of part 1.
with liu hao ran, the female has to be equally young too… im worried but i guess i have to trust these well-versed people.

Nirvana in Fire focused only on some of the people listed in the Langya Rankings, so I guess the new series will introduce us to more of them.
Haven’t seen Liu Hao Ran’s movies/dramas before but he is one of the rising late 90s actors atm.
As long as the story and directing is good (I have faith in the production team), I think whoever’s casted will be able to do well.

I’m more worried about the female lead just like frea. There aren’t that many young actresses that can act. The youngest I can think of is Yang Zi and she’s already in her early twenties. Teen actresses…no idea.

with Wang Kai agreed to this sequel, perhaps this young man will play as his son??? hehehe…or liu tao’s son?? aaahh… i love NIF to pieces, it’s still in my top 2 list. Hopefully, they wont ruin this. i rarely like sequel, but please this one and OTJ, please be good no matter what 😀

I’m betting he’s going to play Prince Qi’s son Ting Chung who grows up to become ambitious and villainous. There was a scene in ep 54 or 55 where MCS and Prince Jing were discussing TC’s future identity.

The first thing that pop into my head with this news is that Liu Hao Ran and Hu Ge are both Yuan Hong’s groomsmen. A totally irrelevant fact. But I can’t help thinking that maybe Hu Ge introduced Liu Hao Ran to the director. Who knows?
As for the female lead, she doesn’t have to be young. She just needs to look compatible with the male lead. Tang Song Yun is good 8 years older than Liu Hao Ran but they look like they are about the same age in “With You”. And that is nothing compared to the 10-year age difference between her and Wu Lei in “Whirlwind Girl.”
