Jiro Wang, An Yue Xi lead supernatural drama Rakshasa Street

Manhua series Rakshasa Street (超级网剧镇魂街) written and illustrated by Xu Chen gets a drama adaptation starring Jiro Wang (Looking for Aurora) and An Yue Xi (Tornado Girl 2). I initially wanted to check out 5 episodes of the anime but ended up binging all 20 episodes. They are pretty short, around 14 minutes each episode. And my gawddddd, the feels in this anime is no joke! Romance is little to none but it’s the story and love between the brothers that got my heart wrung out for them. Our heroine, Xia Ling, is a fresh graduate out of college and looking for jobs. When she receives a text message for an interview late at night at a street called Rakshasa, she rushes out, and belatedly realizes how weird it is for a company to interview so late (she’s desperate for a job). It’s too late now and she has crossed into a transitional dimension, the bridge between the human ream and hell, where spirits are kept until they are sanctioned. There are many streets like this and each street has a guardian general, guarding the place. At Rakshasa Street, it’s the turf of two brothers – Cao Yan Bing (older) and Cao Xuan Liang, presumably are descendants of Cao Cao.

The bond between the brothers remind me so much of my favorite anime – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The story has potentials.

Stills From Anime:

Our female lead, Xia Ling. Normally, mortals can’t cross the border and enter the transitional dimension. However, we soon learn that she’s guided there by Gui Fu Sa Tong, a man who works for Ghostdom (or hell?) and is in charge of locating individuals with great guardian spirit. Her guardian spirit is unfortunately locked up and sealed. To top that off, she’s being hunted by a secret organization who wants to possess her guardian spirit because it has an elixir of immortality.

What is a guardian spirit? Some of us are born with one or more, some of us might know of their existence, and some might never know. They are your guardian angel, your body guard, your protector. People who know of their guardian spirit is often chosen (through vigorous training) to station at one of these transitional dimensions as generals.

Our male lead, Cao Yan Bing. He comes from a family of guardian generals and was born with a guardian spirit. His younger brother wasn’t born with one and their parents consider that a freedom, a blessing. Not long after his baby brother was born, his parents were called away and never came back. We learned later in the story that they were killed, leaving the defenseless kids to fend for themselves, being sold, being beaten, being separated. All I have to say is adversity makes a hero and it’s the case here for both brothers as they grow stronger to protect their home in Rakshasa Street.

Our hero with his guardian spirit – his right-hand man in all his fights.

The background of the brothers broke my heart. I love that the episodes alternate between their story in the past and their story now (with the heroine.)

    Love FMA too! ^^

Didn’t realised that it was a manga I read before until I read the synopsis, because I think the manga’s name is just Zhen Hun Jie, and it’s pretty popular.. I remember seeing a movie poster for it on Facebook (for upcoming movies in 2017), and went to read the manga. The front part wasn’t that fantastic, but it slowly grew on me as I read on. I think the fights left a bigger impression on me than the brotherly love though (maybe because the mangaka wasn’t as experienced as a storyteller yet in the beginning of the story), maybe I’ll check out the drama just to see if the CGI looks ok..

I only watch the anime version so am not sure how the brothers’ story is told in the manhua. I cannot read manga like you guys. I get a headache! LOL.

The fights in the anime are pretty good. Choppy at times but still quite impressive!
