Wang Kai and Ruby Lin lead in Alec Su’s The Devotion of Suspect X

So secretive this production! There was a lot of casting rumors surrounding the new movie to be directed by actor Alec Su, but in the end, it’s not the young faces we saw but two very, very pretty, and well-liked faces of Nick Wang Kai and Ruby Lin. The Devotion of Suspect X (嫌疑人X的献身) is adapted from Japanese novel of the same written by Keigo Higashino (Detective Galileo series), following the intense battle of wits between a very smart Math teacher (Edward Zhang Lu Yi) and an equally intelligent physicist (Nick) over the murder case at the hands of a single mother (Ruby). Mind you, the single mother did KILL her not-nice ex-husband. The math teacher loves and wants to cover up her murder, while the physicist simply desires to reveal the truth.

Battle of wits, sounds like a sexy film already. ;D

Stills:

Pictures on set. Alec Su working hard as the director. I’ll be honest and say that his directorial debut, The Left Ear, left a lot to be desired. Was it pretty? YES. Was it visually moving? No. I’m hoping for his sake this one comes out well-put!

And here it is. The leaked photo of our duo filming on set! Fans said their lady has gained weight. Of course, she’s eating for two people! On the other hand, Nick is back in a tux! When is he not, anyway? Lol.

Previous film adaptations:

1) Japanese Movie: Suspect X, starring Shinichi Tsutsumi and Masaharu Fukuyama in 2008.
2) Korean Movie: Perfect Number, starring Ryoo Seung Bum, Lee Yo Won, and Cho Jin Woong in 2012.

I haven’t seen either version but the actors hired are dependable!

Detailed Synopsis From Wiki: The story begins with Tetsuya Ishigami and Yasuko Hanaoka following their daily routines. Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced single mother who works at a restaurant packing meals for its locals. Ishigami is a highly talented mathematics teacher, who lives next door to Yasuko and her daughter Misato. When Togashi (Yasuko’s abusive ex-husband) shows up one day to extort money from Yasuko, threatening both her and Misato, the situation quickly escalates into violence, and Togashi is killed by mother and daughter. Overhearing the commotion, Ishigami, who is secretly enamored of Yasuko but has never told her so, offers his help, disposing of the body and plotting the cover-up of the murder step-by-step.

When the body turns up and is identified, Kusanagi (the detective investigating the murder case) draws the case and Yasuko comes under suspicion. Kusanagi is unable to find any obvious holes in Yasuko’s manufactured alibi, but still he is sure that there’s something wrong with her story, a suspicion that he cannot shake. Kusanagi brings in Dr. Manabu Yukawa, a physicist and his college friend who frequently consults with the police. Yukawa also went to college with Ishigami, where he learned of Ishigami’s problem-solving techniques and abilities; Yukawa highly rates Ishigami’s intelligence. After meeting him again after so many years, Yukawa becomes convinced that Ishigami had something to do with the murder. What ensues is a high-level battle of wits between Yukawa and Ishigami, as Ishigami tries to protect Yasuko by outmaneuvering and outthinking Yukawa; the teacher is Yukawa’s most clever and determined opponent yet.

When Yukawa finally understands Ishigami’s plans, he is awestruck by the devotion shown by Ishigami to Yasuko. Ishigami is not the person everyone sees, but only Yukawa could understand his plan to cover up the murder committed by Yasuko.

It sounds interesting, but is she filming now? Isnt she pregnant? I wouldnt think twice about her working during her pregnancy if it wasn’t bc she is a bit older than most pregnant women so it is considered a high risk pregnancy.

I believe so. She’s taking flights flying everywhere. Lol. Hard-working lady and of course, hard-working dad. She’s eating very well and I don’t think there’s much action going on with filming or else Qianlong would go after Wu Ah Ge’s head. Hehe, I love this twisty connection. XD

Even if it doesnt have any action scenes, she should be careful with the flights, overwork, etc. Better safe than sorry. I hope she stays healthy.

It’s a good book and the heroine (lead woman?) isn’t doing anything remotely action-y. Her character’s a bit older and her body is not on display all the time, so I think she could handle it.

Omg I love this story. I wonder how they will play out in Taiwan version. The Korean one was romantisied while the Jap one was truer to the book but still lacked the suspense.

    So exicted about this.

Honestly, I like that hes challenging himself with other things, instead of stuck playing the same role over and over, like what wallace chung is doing, lining up idol roles back to back in his drama. Like I want a different face for my novel adaptations people!! Give the newbies a chance!

      Congrats to Ruby!
