Maggie Jiang, Aaron Yan join Wallace Chung’s modern drama

As announced a few weeks ago in the batch news, the said new modern drama is adapted from the novel loosely translated to The Road to Bid Farewell is filled with Flowers (一路繁花相送) by Qing Shan Luo Ta. Wallace Chung was the first person to confirm. This guy is a busy bee. Today, the leading lady has been revealed to be Maggie Jiang, who is currently enjoying popularity for her role in To Be A Better Man. I personally haven’t watched it so no comments from moi. To round out the love triangle, Taiwanese actor Aaron Yan picks this as his last project before his short break from the showbiz to study abroad.

EDIT: The original novel has two couples in the end, or so I’ve heard. I’m thinking that they will play up the love triangle (how could they not let Aaron brood?) but he will get his own girl in the end.

Maggie looking fresh and lovely in this photoshoot.

And here is Aaron getting stripped by his lady friends at the wrap-up party for Refresh Man. Lol. Is it me but he is getting younger?!!

A little bit about the novel that I scraped out: From words of mouth, the story isn’t anything different from your usual meet as teenagers, separated, and then reunited as adults. She’s a young, talented graphic designer, but grew up without the warmth and love from a mother (plenty from the dad and sister, though), but it’s our hero who fills in those missing holes in her heart. At age 15, she stole his first kiss (Yay! XD). At age 17, she told him she does not want to be anyone’s responsibility. At age 25, she tells him he doesn’t have the right to stubbornly remain as an uninvited guest in her life. We then learn that our hero left to study abroad when he was 17. Feeling hurt and betrayed, she shrinks back and moves forward in life without him; refusing to wait, refusing to compromise. Though it kills her inside, she ends up ripping the piece of paper containing his US address. 7 years later, the sensitive and stubborn girl of the past has transformed into a cold woman who doesn’t trust or believe in love. She lives a carefree life and likes to travel, wearing a mask of indifference to deal with people. What happened during those 7 years? It’s the hero’s mission to find out.

Hmm… This genre is pretty popular isn’t it? Why is everyone in dramaland so hung up in the past?! Can we…like… have ONE, just ONE drama about successfully moving on?

No? Okay…

Taking my sweet time with the novel but I sure hope the lead actress can pull off the aloofness without looking like a block of wood.

Wonder if Maggie will play the cousin/sister (堂姐). She looks the part. Now if Aaron plays her other half…that’d be interesting. ?

There are two leading ladies in the book though, graphic designer and the cousin/sister. Hmmm. Kap, do you know if Maggie is playing the graphic designer?

Interesting. The summary I read made no reference to another girl! Are we pulling another Chusen? *quivers*

Good thing you’re reading!! AHAHA 8D

They only say she’s playing the female lead, and in that I’m assuming she’s first lead with Wallace. And Aaron can get his own OTP later.

Yeah the two female leads are cousins/sisters. The book actually starts off with the second female lead, who’s a fashion designer. Lol. I guess maybe they’re getting rid of her or merging both of them into a single female lead.

Maggie while young looks much older, so she will moat likely be the female lead with Wallace. A younger actress for Aaron.

I didn’t expect to enjoy her acting as much as I do but I think Maggie is a better actress than most. Her acting is very natural and unforced.

Why is everyone in dramaland so hung up in the past? Because once a genre is successful, everyone else follows the same formula.

Someone needs to break the mold fast! *cheers*

That is the funniest clip ever! After all, what actress wouldn’t want to show off his abs? And touch his pecs? I hope there was a bit of wine consumed before this was filmed . . . they looked like they were having fun.

There was a lot of wine involved. And a lot of kissing from Aaron’s side.

These golden sandals made me mildly disturbed and very interested … O_o

P.S. No disrespect to Aaron or his abs …

Love Maggie. Great gal, pretty gorgeous, versatile actress…but honestly. I’ve been HATING her character in To Be a Better Man. Well, love/hate. Like, her acting’s fantastic here (a completely different believable character from her role in Go Goal Fighting). But her character…She’s complicated. Like, she has her moments where I can sympathize with her and understand why she’s acting so…bitchy (sorry, no better word), but often times, as much as she hates and resents her admittedly manipulative smarmy brother…she can be just as manipulative and underhanded, and no bottom lines when it comes to getting what she wants. So really, half the time I’m just like, hello pot, meet kettle. But I love To Be a Better Man cuz it’s so real and EVERY character is so human, 3D, and NOT evil. Like, the smarmy second lead after Sun Hong Lei’s ex… even he’s understandable, painted in shades of grey. Our hero himself, is none too clean. Cocky, irritating at times, sometimes selfish, but also caring, selfless, giving. The ex, while she’s the classic didn’t-wait-for-guy-and-hooked-with-someone-else, also has her reasons, and honestly it’s more reasonable to hate the male lead for leaving her with no explanation, than to hate her for moving on. She’s gentle and quiet and nice, but human enough to have her bottom lines and not a complete pushover.

Even the plot. Like a lot of crappy shit going on, but it’s all so reasonable. It’s more like, man, he made bad choices and has shitty luck with a shitty life, but it’s never, omg that’s so “dog blood”, exaggerated, unrealistic.
*SPOILER* Like, Guan Xiao Tong’s character’s dad died, her mom “abandoned” her, she’s got a shitty life. But it never feels like unnecessary angst or plot maneuvering. Her mom seems. while unlikable, human. Everything’s just so slice-of-life (albeit the angsty-er unlucky side of life…but still real and genuine and believable enough to still be life).

Sorry, raving over. It’s really good though. IMO. The pacing’s good, the acting fantastic, the mood/tone mellow and somber (great music and directing), and the emotions so so raw and genuine. It’s honestly the best modern drama I’ve seen in a while. Like quality and substance wise. There are others I like better, but only because of the cuteness, brainlessness, and fluff. But this? This is like a meaty quality-cute steak (in line with the theme of To Be a Better Man). Like, none of that dessert that can be covered with the right flavors. This, if you like it, it’s because of pure quality.
