Weak heroine turned regal and revengy in Princess Wei Young

Oooh, I like the second trailer much better! Action-packed and we finally get to see the other side of sweet and tangy of Tang Yan’s character, manipulative and revengy. The guys master the bow and arrows while the ladies show off their piercing glares and possessiveness. I just realized the story is basically a bunch of sisters getting entangled with the princes. XD

I hope Tang Yan turns slightly malicious in this. Or you know, stop being the weak heroine. She did say she accepted all the criticism she got for playing a string of Mary Sue characters, so maybe we’ll see a change for the better in this one. From what I’ve read on weibo, people say her character from this short teaser reminds them of ZiXuan from CP3. Hopefully that’s a good thing.

I see her stabbing someone near the end so hoping that’s a good sign? We are so evil. I merely skimmed through CP3 so don’t remember much. The only paladin that I finished through was CP1!

      • 18 thoughts on “Weak heroine turned regal and revengy in Princess Wei Young

I skipped through both CPs. Actually, I think I may have skipped through most of CP1 to the very end. Everyone basically died except for HG so there was no point for me to go back and watch it. =P

CP3…I only wanted to watch Tang Yan and Wallace, haha.

I remember being hooked the moment Ady appeared (never fancied the plot much)… Hu Ge ah, there is ONE FINE LADY….GET HER BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!! Lol.

Lol. CP1 is actually my fav of the franchise so far. I know a lot of people really loved White Tofu (lol) and Zixuan, and while I did too (definitely really touching fated couple), I liked CP1 overall more. I think the CP1 main character (Li Xiao Yao) just appealed to me way more than CP3. And while I wasn’t totally on Crystal’s ship (like seriously Ady and Hu Ge all the way!) she was IMO better than Yang Mi in CP3. I just…really hated Yang Mi’s character in CP3. CP1 was angsty but both more heartfelt, epic, and genuine to me. Ah Nu and Tang Yu Xiao Bao were to–die-for-adorable too (Crystal’s friend the cute glutton and Eddie Peng’s character).

Tang Yan was definitely AT. HER. BEST. as Zi Xuan though. She pulled off the slightly-aloof yet vulnerable, selfish and a little callous yet so so understandable and empathize-with-able, She was definitely good in CP3. At her least fake, most in-character, genuine performance. I really do hope she does well here. I remember falling in love with her from CP3 and then gradually losing interest as I kept watching her works.

Ady and Hu Ge ALL THE WAY. HEEHEE!

This looks so good! I don’t even care about Tang Yan stiffed acting lol.

I find the ladies looking alike each other again YIKES, who is who and how is one supposed to be more beautiful than the other?

And it seems like every actress are avoiding Mary Sue characters now and trying to get into an evil one. Well…so many people still like Jackie Chan, Dicky Cheung, Stephen Chow, etc. and their redundant funny character in every single movies bc they did so well in each of them. These actresses don’t have to keep changing roles to become famous, just do well on what their character should be like…

Ok, first, the ladies in this thing look stunning. All of them.I look at their pictures and I can’t find a single bad angle, mismatched clothing items, bad hair/make up, nothing. Everything looks perfect. The guys, however, are not that lucky, especially Vanness, especially the HAIR o_O. I can live with Luo Jin’s puffy hairdo but Vanness just looks like an octopus died on his head. I pray that his look changes at some point during the show because even his excellent bad boy pout can’t distract me from this disaster.
Also, I greatly approve of “evil” Tang Yan and I’m very interested to see if she can pull this off successfully. Zi Xuan from CP3 is my favorite TY character but she wasn’t evil per se, more like selfish, and even that was within very acceptable limits.

    • 18 thoughts on “Weak heroine turned regal and revengy in Princess Wei Young

LOL can’t help laughing at how you described Vanness. He definitely got way too much braidings on his head, even a girl wouldn’t look too pretty with them. I was surprised to see him here, I was like…he looks so horrible but it’s Vanness, man! I might forgive his bad hair compared to his makeup.

      • 18 thoughts on “Weak heroine turned regal and revengy in Princess Wei Young

but my description is correct, isn’t it? :))) In fact, the hair is so distracting that I had to go back and take a better look at his overall styling to notice anything else. I wonder what he did to piss off his hair and make up people like that? :/

        • 18 thoughts on “Weak heroine turned regal and revengy in Princess Wei Young

Nell, you are so hilarious! A single octopus doesn’t have nearly enough tentacles to account for all Vanness’ braids. It looks more like a dozen octopi?

I’m not sure why Tang Yan gets in deeper trouble for her Mary Sue roles compared to other actresses. 90% of Liu Shi Shi’s work also involves Mary Sue characters. BBJX, Da Mo Yao, Imperial Doctress. Most of her well-known roles. Hu Bing Qing’s Tornado Girl. Angelababy’s Yun Zhong Ge. Hua Qian Gu. A lot of female leads are written that way. I do hope they will write more non-Mary Sue characters. I’m neither a rabid fan nor hater of Tang Yan and other actresses.

Well, thanks, but it wouldn’t be fair of me to get all the credit. Some situations are just inspiring. :))))

The thing with TY’s Mary Sues is that they really stand out. She plays them with a kind of chirpiness that some people may find annoying.

        • 18 thoughts on “Weak heroine turned regal and revengy in Princess Wei Young

The other thing is Tang Yan been acting and playing these roles…since forever. Liu Shi Shi gets the same flack though. Can’t compare Angelababy and Hu Bing Qing since they are relatively new in dramaland compared to TY and LSS.

Thank you for your replies, ladies. I can see why her everlasting effervescence can really bug some people.

Sometimes the good and the bad factors of a TV series are not shared enough with the novelist/screenwriter, producer and director. The leads get the brunt of the fire when things go wrong.

Recent Mainland series often have Mary Sue’s. Even Sun Li’s Miyue’s Legend, Zhen Huan can be categorized as MS too. Mainland currently has too many female novelists who are writing a lot of MS. I was a bit shocked when Ruby Lin in Imperial Concubine had Prince Yan Kuan, 2 of his royal siblings, his royal father, and Prince Wallace Huo of another kingdom. All pining for her. Not to mention a bunch of other princes who are not memorable. So narcissistic. And that series had so many fans.

Don’t know about the pink dress. The fringe trim looks unsuitable for traditional styling.

Even if it is not completely authentic, the dress suits Rachel, so I think it is ok.

Palace drama? Not my thing, but I’ll pop in once in a while to catch the ladies fashion.

What do you think?
