Deng Lun and Krystal Jung confirmed for Graduation Season

Another modern drama coming your way. I guess Lay is too busy with EXO’s activities to follow through with this project. He was first announced and then they jumped through a few actors before getting to Deng Lun. He was the second lead in Fifteen Years of Migratory Birds, and looks like he’s one of the new rising faces in the industry. Besides Graduation Season (毕业季), he has a modern drama with Sun Yi, and will also play a supporting character in Zhao Li Ying’s The Legend of Chu Qiao (more on this later). Quite busy! His leading lady, who was confirmed last year is Krystal Jung, from Korean girl group, F(x).

Booting Ceremony:

Krystal was not there that day.

Graduation Season (毕业季) tells the struggles of newly graduated students in the cut throat world of fashion. Krystal plays a practical, bright, and independent fashion designer with a burden of feeding her whole family. While our male lead is an heir to an underwear company trying to get recognized for his own strengths. LOL. They start out as your typical bickering couple.

Filming begins May 2nd.

Not a huge fan of Krystal, but don’t really hate her either. I’m just so tired of the korean actors taking over the many lead roles. Whatever, too exasperated to repeat rants on the same continuous dissatisfactions.

Nothing against Krystal though; I hear she was really appreciated and liked in her role in The Heirs, but I hear she was terrible in My Lovely Girl. Good and bad. No opinion on her personally (I didn’t watch either of those). But that’s already better than my impression of Victoria Song though.

I didn’t go very far with The Heirs to form an opinion. But yes at the endless cycle of our rant. XD I think I passed the hurdle when Zhang Han pulled the stint for the guitar drama! Lol.

I get the impression that koreans are more popular than local actors in china. At chinese award shows, the frenzied screaming and applause usually goes to the koreans, while muted or no applause is reserved for domestic actors. So many C-dramas are relegating chinese for secondary roles to support the starring korean actors.
Shan Ying seems like the only production team going against the grain – not a single K-star in
NIF, OTJ. Wonder how long that will last until they succumb to the hallyu invasion?

Exactly. And I hope never. With some like Hwang Yi Cheul in I am Singer, I can understand because he did start with only a single fan in China, and despite many of his fans being biased because he’s hot and nice, he’s definitely proven that he also has the skills to justify his Chinese fanbase. So many others like Victoria (yes she’s “Chinese” but her career base was started in Korea), EXO, the nameless unknown korean dude in Amazing Boyfriend, and so many many others are just loved because they’re korean. Like I understand K-ent is overwhelming popular and it’s a trend and admittedly they have an idol factor that is catered toward attracting appeal, but to call in so many cross-culture acting roles, opportunities, and fans, there should be at least some quantifiable, qualifiable, tangible reason or proof aside from oh-they-look-good-and-are-korean.

Lol I promised not to get drawn into the neverending rant/discussion on this, but I couldn’t help it…succumbed to the anger and frustration.

I mean, Chinese actors like Wallace Chung, Chen Bolin, etc are getting more into the collab K-productions, but they’re rarely the “sole leads” they’re usually like part of a “group lead” cast, where there are multiple equally important leads.

Was surprised to see Chen Bolin in a minor role as a baddie in K-drama “Monster.” His name wasn’t even mentioned in the korean publicity trailers or stills. Indifference toward prominent c-stars in k-entertainment by k-media contrasts greatly with rapturous attention by chinese fans for any k-star in c-entertainment. I also think chinese media and fans should quit using ‘oppa’ for chinese actors.

I was agreeing with your words until I saw this:
“So many others like Victoria (yes she’s “Chinese” but her career base was started in Korea)”

Eeh I am pretty sure she is more chinese than 99.99% people here for example and speaks better chinese than 99.99% people here too. So I am not sure why did you think you have any “right” to accuse of her not being chinese? Regardless of where her career started off, she has every right to work in her home country especially if the domestic industry sees her marketable. And I know she is marketable. She works in her home country, pays taxes to her home country, and is a chinese national. So there should be absolutely no problem with that and it’s downright incorrect to equal her to ethnic korean stars coming to China for money, who can’t say a complex sentence in mandarin.

Bothers me becuase the Chinese entering the K-ent are tested, skilled actors, whereas a lot of the Koreans entering C-ent are newbies, unknowns, and idols with little to no acting experience. And they tend to get the better opportunities! The power imbalance…

        Hallyu is already dying down.

No. they’re in fact expanding. You should keep in mind that South Korea only has 75 million population and they use all they have to market anything ranging from Electronic Product to Entertainment (music and drama).

My 2 cents, at the end of the day, TW, HK, Mainland actors are still quite focused on getting their bills paid. If they get paid handsomely for playing second fiddle, a lot of them will go for it. As long as there are enough people watching the films and TV series. There are always new talents entering the industry. Older actors often think they need to strike the iron while it’s hot. It can be surprising sometimes: Huang Xiao Ming, Wallace Chung, Bolin Chen, Joe Chen, etc. Sometimes they also get pestered to star in something by the producers etc. There are welcome exceptions like Hu Ge, Sun Hong Lei, Duan Yi Hong etc.

Perhaps many Mainlanders see themselves as being residents of an emerging country. As such, they get lured by flashy clothes, fast cars, and the materialistic side of things. Somewhere along the line, there’s also the excessive admiration for Western countries & Korea, etc. They are very much fascinated by consumerism. They have come to associate consumerism and foreign countries with luxurious lifestyle, having career success, and living a good life. Korean series and actors show a lot of brand name consumerism that seems to satiate the Mainland appetite. And the K-actors are having a boon. I, too, find it inexplicable. Why they want Yoona in Zhao Zi Long (the whole series is inexplicable). Whatever the K-actor’s name is in “My Wonderful BF”. I don’t watch these series so I’ll stop here. I hope the tide will turn and you’ll be able to have a good ent. experience!

As a citizen of one of the developing country in Asia, I strongly agree with all of your point about consumerism. Here in Indonesia, people get easily attracted to shop in world class mall in neighboring country, Singapore. Everything about Singapore is always seen with the eyes of admiration, even while you get sick, most rich people will choose to get treated there.

I think at some point in C-ent, it became that if you’re Korean and not too bad looking, they’ll love you which is a bit like a fetish for Korean celebs? Certainly not a fetish for all but it would be considered for a certain group and maybe on a lesser level, less of a fetish but almost like general like for anything and everything Korean for others. It honestly bothers me when people only get cast because they’re korean without any consideration of their skills and talent. And that the media goes crazy over that person just because they’re korean.

Don’t watch k-dramas so not familiar with most of them but I quite liked Deng Lun in 15 years. Although I have a soft spot for Zhang Ruo Yun (those eyes!), I enjoyed Deng Lun’s acting and he is really quite cute when he smiles!

In terms of the hallyu wave, it seems a bit strange to me (only started watching c-dramas since Shan Shan Lai Le so also relatively new) esp if the person cant act. I saw parts of Beautiful Secret and totally cannot understand the Victoria-mania (i know she is chinese but got her start in Korea) and gave up on Zhao Zi Long because the Yoona casting is really so odd. So many beautiful Chinese actresses that can play that role!

I am however watching My Amazing Boyfriend now and Kim Tae Hee (?) seems quite apt for this role. His height, posture and gait (perhaps from his modelling experience) does give him a bit of an otherworldly feel (unlike Elvin Han in Wuxin who feels just like you and I!) although I fail to see how he is considered super handsome (despite him being cute when he smiles!).

I also thought Song Kye Ho (?) in the c-movie The Queens had a very ethereal beauty and feminism which suited well to the role that she was playing.

Regardless of where her (Victoria’s) career started off, she has every right to work in her home country especially if the domestic industry sees her marketable. So yes personally I have no problem with her working in chinese entertainment because she is a chinese from head to toe. The money she is making all goes to China economy anyways. That’s why I have a problem with koreans easily entering china market but I am totally OK with the likes of Victoria, Lay, Luhan or Kris, Tao entering the domestic market.
